  • The mix of melody and the counter melody played on harmonics around 5:00 to 5:12 is, for me, simply the most beautiful guitar playing on youtube

  • His genius was simply overwhelming and wonderful.

I learned so much from chord chemistry, and modern chord progressions, jazz solo lines.

I love to hear this dear man play so beautiful.

Jesus be with you and bless you forever Ted,

    Harlan

  • Thank you for posting this.

  • your killin me ,i did not know he passed, glad to have found him,now sad to hear hes gone, send in the clowns to make me smile,=GBlessTed n thank you for sharing

  • This tune was on the only album he ever made before his untimely young death.

  • When ever I need inspiration , or have lost a bit of faith in mankind ...I listen to Ted play Send in The Clowns. Such beauty is displayed here in his guitar playing ... I think all videos posted arethe greatest ever guitar player on the planet ...I love to hear more Cheers and back to reality

  • I must have Brass balls. I sent his video to Steve Jobs. Steve is THE one person on this planet that could appreciate the playing of Ted Greene. In my simple way, I am sure that I have influenced Steve to admire another icon of America. God bless Steve, his family, The beautiful music of Ted. Ted deserves more than our simple homage...Ted deserves giants like Steve Jobs

  • I'm a guitarist for eight years, from metal to jazz. This is so beautiful.

  • The change at 0:37 does something special to me.

  • if I could just spend a tear learning to play this one song like Ted does - I would never need to play another song in my life again til the end of my days...beautiful is too unbeautiful a word to use to describe this...

  • This transcends all space and time and creates a pure, harmonic bliss.

  • How meaningfully and humbly he nods his head to himself at the applause ; I think that's beautiful and shows the true intent of the musician. Whoever fails to see beauty in Ted needs to stop reading Ayn Rand!

  • Anyone whoever took a lesson from Ted knows he was not only a great guitar innovator, but also a kind, insightful, and caring person, who knew a hell of a lot about life. He left his mark on my soul. I miss him.

  • He is my absolute inspiration, although I'll never be able to reach his craft!

Really sad that he's not with us anymore!

  • One of the most masterful things I have ever heard

  • Ok! Who missed the like button??

  • Musician of heart ...

    wonderfull moment...

  • He was really in love with the guitar.

  • Beautiful!

  • Brings a tear to my eye every time I watch this video. We have lost a true master, and my hope is that he will never be forgotten in the hearts of every guitar player on the planet. This video should be required viewing for every guitar player. Long live Ted

  • @eightstring ...Thanks for your sharing of this video...I noticed that Barbara's last name is misspelled. I hope that is helpful for you to know.

  • @eightstring amen to that brother, this goes so much deeper than just 'guitar playing' though, this is just a musician, expressing his soul, compulsory viewing for every musician. ted is the perfect example of a musician who plays his instrument, these days too many guitar players let the guitar play them!

  • @eightstring I sung this back in my high school days because my chorus teacher was a big Soundhiem fan. You can really hear the independence of voices in Teds word. Each note plucked is an alto, soprano, tenor, bass singer. Surreal.

  • God bless the person who got this on tape. What I'd give to have taken one lesson with him.

  • wow this guy is totally amazing. This is my first time hearing about him and seeing what he did here. He's AWESOME!

  • This sounds like some of the slower Buckethead stuff :) beautiful

  • Why don't you name the videos the way they should be? Perhaps then more people would be able to find them... Envoyer Les Clowns? Somewhere Over The Arc de Ciel?

  • not only the best teacher of all time, but an amazing player and person as well. you will be missed ted.

  • wow wow wow

    I love Ted

    Just beautiful

  • To AmundLauritzen:

...the thing about tone, and guitar, is that regardless of what equipment you use the majority of it comes through your fingers. So it makes sense that Ted's equipment is minimal. All his sound was in his hands and heart.

  • Ted Greene lives on

    What a wonderful guitar player

  • Beautiful tone and feeling ! Good vid ! Thx !

  • Most favourite of mine..Love this tune ...Would of loved to see Ted & Cleo Laine do this melody together ...Cheers & Thanks for posting ..A true classic

  • I've watched Stephen Sondheim's workshops coaching how he'd like his piece to be sung; would love to hear his opinion of Ted's interpretation.

  • Doesn't get much better then this!

  • my favorit guitarrist !

  • One of the most beautiful guitar performances i've ever heard.

  • yeah that tone is just amazing...

  • Does anybody know details about what equipment he used here? That tone! Oh my!

  • I think it's just tele into a fender amp!

  • omg i just had one of those "i been playing 23 yrs and i might as well give up now" moments....

  • I was always saying, that I will never listen to jazz or blues, but now I'm listening to Ted in the background. Calm and emotional.

  • Saying you will never listen to jazz and blues is like saying that you are only going to breathe the oxygen in the air and exclude all the other gases. Also, considering he's just playing a pop song with amazing style and technique, your comment doesn't really make sense.

  • you didn't get the point

  • I guess not. What was it?

  • I mean, that I'm not a blues fan, but now when I found Ted, I think his music is great and it's worth listening to it. I just wanted to say, that he is great.

  • That's cool man. I'm glad to hear your enjoying yourself.

  • Hey you dont have to pick up a vinyl, its on cd! :D

  • ya but it'd have to be on like 5 cds to have the same audio quality of vinyl. CD mixes are so lame, so much compression.

  • thanks ted, and thanks for posting this 8 string. It's sad that there are so few recordings of one of the greatest guitar players in modern history.

On a technical note, I finally figured out by watching this how he does all those artifical harmonics. Did he come up with that technique of using his middle and ring finger to play them? It looks so impossibly hard but the tones he gets are amazing!!

  • hey if you look up some Danny Gatton he shows how to do these... not sure if it is on his hot licks or his strictly rhythm guitar series, it escapes me XD but do check it out, i hope it helps.

  • It's an old Chet Atkins / Lenny trick

Look for the vid "things that ted greene taught me"

  • What did he die of? I had all of his jazz chord books. Boy he had long fingers... Some of those inversions....

    Wonderful music.

  • thanks for posting! beautiful sounds...joyous

  • The most beautiful display of guitar mastery I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Thank you Ted and thanks for posting this!

  • Such a beautiful posting...thank you very much for your kind words. It was my pleasure to post this magnificent video of the master. Long live Ted

    RC

  • Ted blew the doors wide open in the 70's with his 2 book treatise on jazz improvisation ... furry Ted anyone remember the day? RIP Ted

  • His sound is so beautiful...it makes Allan Holdsworth and Eric Johnson sound like they're playing leaf blowers!

  • i think some guy called bill has been robbing this bloke blind.

  • Strictly speaking the overtones come from the artifical harmonics combined with regular fretted notes. But the true tone come from Ted's mastery of the instrument, his personality really comes through, like a third arm. Oh and his telecaster & amp aren't too bad either ;)

  • I love you Ted Greene.

  • I believe Ted used heavier strings and tuned them down to get a sound that he liked. If you watch all of the videos I have posted, you will notice that Ted is constantly playing with the controls on the guitar or the amplifier....regardless his sound is perfect. RC

  • Again - does anyone know his reasoning for tuning down a half step? -Dean

  • sounds better.

  • Oh my goodness...

I bought Mr Greenes' book "chord catastrophe" 25 years ago, but never had any idea what could be done by studying his methods. Let us be grateful that his work lives in sound and in print. VALE.

  • chord chemistry lol?

  • eightstring - astounding and beautiful music played on a guitar. Q: is Ted getting some vibrato effect with waving his picking hand?

    thanks!

  • Jack and Uncle

I think that the overtones come from Ted Left hand which he would squeeze the fret board, the right hand waving seems to be more of a rythmn thing that Ted would use for himself. You might want to visit the Ted Green web site and there is a forum for questions like this...personally, I still trip out on Ted's mastery of the fret board and his musicality. A master of taste, tone and soul. Long live my friend Ted...I miss him so

    RC

  • Sorry I just noticed I misspelled Ted's family name...it should have been Greene

  • Are you freaking kidding me... where are all those overtones coming from? Absolutely stunning.

  • if you fret for example the 3rd fret, then you hit a harmonic on the 15th fret, splitting the distance.

  • I totally understand the technique - it's the effortless/amazing application of it that I wonder about :).

  • Not only an absolute music genius, also his personality and soul comes through in every tone.

His playing literally makes the hair stand up on my back - every time, and makes me want to go pick up my guitar. I'll have to order some of his books if I can find them.

Big thanks to everyone who share videos with his playing.

  • Absolutely astonisihingly beautiful! I never heard of this guy until my friend edudzzaj recomended him. Once again I thank you! And thanks for posting all this great music, its totally inspiring!

  • His books on jazz soloing and chord chemistry are essential. Takes a couple lifetimes of music knowledge and condenses it into handwritten and drawn grids an anecdotal write ups. The best books out there, easily.

  • George

A beautiful and thoughtful posting...thank you very much. The little I know of Ted is that he was a true mentor to anyone who was interested in music, and the guitar....once again thank you for your posting

    RC

  • Only a person with a real beautiful heart can make music of this quality and have such impact on us.

  • Wow!!! This falls in the category of "people that I never thought that I would-see-in my life." Thank goodness for Youtube.

  • a quote from a forum on ted greene's website from joe diorio that i like "...Ted Greene should just be placed on a pedestal and admired." btw the cd version of this is also beyond stunning!

  • Holy. Shit.

    o________o

  • Close your eyes and LISTEN. It's MUSIC. Give what he's playing a chance and it'll bring you to tears every time. Wish I could have met Ted.

  • zynnetrix

yeah thats the way that neck is so that you can get your hand around

its really good for playing fast or if you have small hands

but yeah he does have a really thin neck

  • Yeah. You know more about it? Would be very interested in this, because me hands are just too damn small (Yeah, I know what you all think now, but once you get a surgery in your wrist, you loose the hope, that the hand will adopt to _big_ chord & voice leading stresses ;). Does this neck got a special name / Can I buy it somewhere?

  • i dont know

i think it just depends on the guitar

i know schecters have thing necks

so do some jacksons and ibanez

but if you want the fat sound gibson and fender have

then get a fender or gibson

some of them have the thiner necks

    like the sg and v

but shecters good too because they dont have a floating bridge (most of the time)

so yeah just check out those 3 companies

  • wonderful arrangement....beautifully played

  • I don't like talking about equipment, but does it only appear to me that his fretboard is a little smaller in its radius (not in length)?

  • A genius, a great musician and above all A GREAT HUMAN BEING!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sure. My favorite chord melody player. Would never have gotten to know him w/o youtube & the internet in general. Great thing.

  • thats really pretty. thanks for sharing this

  • Overwhelming talent and one of my favorite tunes from the CD.

  • Beautiful improvisation. Ted, you are greatly missed. RIP

  • Fantastic R.I.P.

  • PERFECT TED ! VINCIUS BRAZIL !
