I feel like what made other counter-culture movements successful is they all had some an oppressive force to fight against. The draft united the hippies, the conformist culture of the 50 united the beatniks, and so on. Modern society, while still oppressive, does not overtly oppress as often as in the past, so there is not as much to fight against. In my opinion this has created the "hipster" breed, because the nature of our youth is to rebel, yet hipsters do not have too much to rebel against.

I feel like what made other counter-culture movements successful is they all had some an oppressive force to fight against. The draft united the hippies, the conformist culture of the 50 united the beatniks, and so on. Modern society, while still oppressive, does not overtly oppress as often as in the past, so there is not as much to fight against. In my opinion this has created the "hipster" breed, because the nature of our youth is to rebel, yet hipsters do not have too much to rebel against.
