Steve Winwood has more talent than I'll ever have. I strangely enough don't feel any jealousy, I'm just so happy with all the music he makes. He's no show off, and just plays his best.
Why did Spencer Davis need to find a replacement for lead vocalist after Steve left? He could sing almost as good as him. He would just need a new keyboardist who could sing backup or something. I'm sure he's no slouch on guitar either.
From the perspective of someone just about Stevie's age (in real time), the thing about him (in this vid) that makes me smile like his mom might ... is that little bedhead-sparked cowlick he's sportin' -- and the fact that it's sittin' right on top o' some of the best guitar work I think I've ever heard. Just wow.
Here's a gem. The Spencer Davis Group's take on the Elmore James classic "Dust My Broom". Steve Winwood this time on guitar. Where would modern music be today had the Brits not gravitated to American Blues they way they dig. Eric Burdon once said it best, "we took in America's trash". Now that's a re-cycling story of a different colour.
@rayjoiner I definitely wouldn't say that American blues was trash. It was just early and not well explored. Thats what bands like this did explored further into the genre without straying too far from the early american greats.
Not only can he sing like no one else, but he plays the organ and the guitar! Eric Clapton invited him to play on one of his "guitar player" specials and I think surprised everyone by just how good he is on guitar.
Here's what's happening on UTube with the older, popular music videos.
The owner of the copyright sees a few thousand views and does nothing since it would cost too nuch to bring the song to the retail level with marketing, packaging and distribution.
However, the owner sees 8,000,000 views he takes the video off UTube and sells it on line or at the retail level.
Alot of my favorite 60's groups are no longer free and have been removed, but the artists are making new $.
If I wasn't seeing the video I'd swear it was Steve singing this one. Spencer ceded most of the vocals to Steve but this proves he was no slouch himself in that dept. And even way back then Steve could certainly burn on guitar!
@est3inb3rg All these English guys sound incredibly similar when they sing Blues....maybe it's the accent "blend"! Davis, Winwood, Clapton, Brooker, Dave Mason probably many more...they all sound alike!
Me neither. I haven't really seen him do anything significant besides the singing here. His guitar is barely audible too. But yeah, he probably formed the band.
@PageandPlant4Life why do you think SW left & started Traffic? He was only 15 at the time he joined Spencer Davis: who was a school teacher! The amazing thing is that the group carried on after Winwood left...!
Any die hard fans out there would maybe know he had a daughter adopted in 1966 - can you tell by my youtube pic we are related? (by the way I have no idea what he is famous for!) =/
Brilliant. What an incredible guitar player Steve Winwood was. [Originally posted by mooseontheloose and mistakenly removed by me...I wanted to reply that Steve still is a great guitarist. Oops!]
The Brits called Clapton god, but man listening to the Winwood Brothers play, I am dumbfounded. Their depth of soulful voice is bye far better than most British singers of that era. They sound more like an American home grown band than a British one. Man can they play the blues.I love them so much!
Interesting.....the lyrics are in Finnish!

@Mookie78735 definitely that voice. wonder how many souls Steve Winwood had to sell to the devil to get that? O.o

This song isn't by Robert Johnson, but by Elmore James. Elmore James based this song off of Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom."
