  • Nice to see a woman's wit, intelligence, confidence and drive can help her to achieve tv stardom, without the benefit of great physical beauty. She had a head start of course on radio, but once on television she "earned her stripes".

  • I love everything about Arlene!! Such a pleasure to watch on WML and elsewhere. Elegant, fun, intellligent, warm--what' s not to like about Ms. Arlene? Oh, and lovely to look at and a beautiful cultivated voice that avoids snobbiness, cuz she's the real thing.

  • Thanks so much for sharing! I especially love her voice!

  • this is the dailog incase you're wondering

me: hear you died ANNE francis

father: is she the one from game shows

    m: that's arlene

m: know you died ANNE francis

    mother: arlene francis?!

m: NO that's what even dad said

    why the confusion!!

  • Arlene Francis. I knew there was a great deal of substance and intelligence with her. One could not help but to like her and I did very much. Class does tell.

  • oh I laughed myself to pieces recent times. when I said forbidden planet star ANNE francis had passed away and both my parents said arlene, which is hilarious because not only not to be confused, but arlene was already in her 90s when she died 10 years ago.

my parents expect her to be still living over 100?!

  • There is only two words to describe Arlene Francis ! Beautiful and witty.

  • Très Charmante !

  • Charming, talented, classy, intelligent, witty, gracious, generous, determined, and groundbreaking. Whatever she was doing, she always did well. She was a fantastic, beautiful person inside and out, and this world is a better place for having had Arlene in it. She was truly one-of-a-kind. Thank you for posting this wonderful tribute!

  • @delightfulstar Wonderful post--all those adjectives describe Arlene beautifully--thank you.

  • ROFL at 0:16

  • She was a harlot in MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE in 1932 with Bela Lugosi

  • Hi, I am the blonde narrating on-camera at the beginning of this video. It was a documentary on The Game Show Network called "Women Who Changed Gameshows" I think. I filmed my segment here in NYC in (around) August 2006, and it aired a few months later.

  • @JackieS41 how did you get the job? are you an expert in this field?

  • She has such a beautiful speaking voice. I wished actresses and tv personalities spoke like that today as opposed to what those valley girls sound like. Much easier on the ears. And brain.

  • WOW thank you so much. What a smart and gorgeous woman she was.

  • Im an actor an would love to have a career like Arlene had!!!!

  • I remember in even in her later years, Arlene continued to do occasional television commercials, often accompanied by her dog, "Missy".

  • Before Dove soap was introduced in the 1950's, they ran a "mystery name" advertising campaign and Arlene was the spokesperson. In the lead-up, the wonderful new soap was described, but people were left guessing as to what the name would be.

When the big day finally arrived, Arlene made the announcement to the world on live TV, but she pronounced the name wrong, using a long "O" sound (the past-tense verb). As a result, her job as a spokesperson for Dove took a dive!

  • If there wasn't a glass celing for women on TV in the early 1960's, she may have replaced Jack Parr on the Tonight Show. She guest hosted for Paar many times during his reign, at Paar's request. And she was one of the rotating hosts of the show during the 6 months between Paar and Johnny Carson. But it was unthinkable in those days for a woman to permanently host a show like that.

  • What documentary is this from? Thanks for sharing it! Am I wrong or is that Vicki Lawrence narrating at the end?

  • It was on GSN a while back, maybe a year and a half ago. They did a few docs on the history of game shows, and this one focused on the pioneering ladies of the genre. Dr. Joyce Brothers and Betty White (emphasis on the H in wHite of course!) were also featured...probably Brett Somers too though I can't recall for sure.

  • @hifithepanda ~ certainly sounds like vicki lawrence.

  • Very interesting (plus, Arlene in a bathing suit--). Thanks very much.

  • vicki lawrence, i believe, is the narrator.

  • You're right... I just posted the same thing... not having seen your comment, lol.

  • This is wonderful! Thanks for posting it. Arlene Rocks!

  • I love Arlene even more after seeing this! Thank you for posting!

  • Ditto what's been posted. I especially loved seeing those candids of her with her family. One can't help but adore her.

  • WOW WOW WOW!!! Thank you sooo much for posting this!! Oh I so wish it was longer too! But really amazing to see clips from Blind Date and so many wonderful photos I've never seen before. She was absolutely Gorgeous and not to mention the Greatest woman in TV history, period!

  • This is absolutely superb! Wish it were longer! Breath taking to see footage from "Blind Date" according to Imdb all footage from that series was believed to be lost. Thank you roots66 for all your fabulous posts. Love Miss Francis!

  • Wow thanks for posting!! Definite *favorite*
