@hersey10 I can't comment on how many NASA employees will lose their jobs but at least 3000 contractors have already.  Current estimates say that for each of those contractors, 2.5-3 people that work in support industries (retail, restaurants, grocers, etc) in the area will lose their jobs. One of the largest shopping centers in Titusville (the city immediately west of KSC) has lost 2 of its 3 anchor stores. There's a very real economic impact that's already here.

First of all, the shuttle is amazing. I worked on it. Second, those people bust their butts for that program and many have paid the price for it in divorces, alcoholism, and death. Many of the things you have today in electronics, medical, agriculture, etc. have come from the space program thru the years. So they are proud of what they do, you all should be proud of what they have done not only for this country but for others all over the world. Enough said!!!!!

Pity that some people focus on a slightly less-than-perfect circle rather than marvel at the sight of SO MANY PEOPLE untiing to pay tribute to America's Space Shuttle program. Many of these individuals (me included) have spent their entire adult lives working to ensure the launch and safe return of our beloved astronauts. The last launch will be bittersweet, indeed, as we will be filled with pride in our accomplishments and sadness at the end of the program.
