is canio supposed to cry 'Nedda, Nedda' there at the end? im just wondering...i've seen several productions of this opera, but i'm not a musician....i've never seen that done, but i thought it was a cool idea, adds another layer to his character. is it in the text?
Oh--- actually I prefer Ah Si Ben Mio over Di Quella by far since it's really more beautiful and Di Quella is like a cabaletta but Ah Si Ben Mio is beautiful when sung well.
the best Dramatic tenor in my time and I was lucky enough to hear him and he sang without the bad habits of Corelli who he is always compared with who was really more a spinto with dramatic color. His Otello was really exciting in house when I heard him in 1959 and I have heard several Otello's since then in house. Someone said recently that Jussi could sing Otello, hell then Gigli and Bergonzi could, maybe on recording but in house? I don't think so, Pav. did it here and it was not good.
A wonderful performance but to suggest that he was the absolute best of his generation is nonsense. Of his generation were Tucker, Bjorling, and going a little back Peerce all of whom were Del Monaco's peers as singers. Del Monaco did, however, have the greatest dramatic tenor VOICE of the century. Try Del MOnaco, Bjorling, and Tucker in, for example, 'ah, si ben mio,' to see the difference between a great voice and a great singer with a great voice.
Yes, his voice is bright and smooth, not at heavy, nasalized, with air problems, and all over the place like it was in his late performances. I think the drastic change is due to an automobile accident hi suffered during the 50's.
It is Paolo Silveri.

@brigid88 as far as I know, it is not written, but this is verismo and it goes very well with the dramatic ending.
