Part of the pleasure of attending these great performance was the ease with which one COULD attend. No ordering months in advance, no listing 12 alternate dates, nolining up at 6AM for standing room, etc. Attending NYCO at this time was like going to the movies; you'd decide in the afternoon and still find an affordable ticket up to curtain time, and still be rewarded by a great show. Today even a free rehearsal of Armida hardly seems worth the effort...

I'm afraid I'm in the minority here. Everyone loves Gianna's Lucia. But I don't. I have neve heard of her either but she looks like a 1980's TV actress with bad acting mannerisms (there's no subtlety here). Her technique is mostly acting (speaking some lines like in a play) and not true bel canto singing. And why did she want to kiss her own brother Enrico at 2:15 to 2:18. LOl I know she went crazy but I didn't think she had gone that crazy. i thought she was still able to tell who was who LOL
@MastersoftheOpera I wasn't impressed by her acting either, but the singing was quite good. Doesn't sound like she had a particularly large voice (large as coloratura sopranos go) but the fioratura and high Eb were quite nice.
Her legato, her ease, the way she really shows us the "madness" ... Flawless. I do wonder why they decided to switch the order of "Spargi d'amaro pianto".
Ms. Rolandi (a.k.a. Lady Gianna Davis) had a remarkable voice. I saw her Zerbintta @ NYCO and was astounded. She did not sing long, marrying Sir Andrew Davis early on. Apparently a "Lady" in England isn't supposed to work. Fond memories of this voice.
Terrifiant et sublime, son chant (parfaitement magnifique) et son jeu (halluciné) ne font qu'un : voilà un exemple sidérant d'un moment de bonheur grandiose. MERCI !
Boy, did it do my heart GOOD to see all these comments about the great Gianna Rolandi! I was such a big fan of hers that I would try to travel to wherever she was singing. I went to see her sing Despina with Carol Vaness in Cosi at Chicago Lyric and she couldn't fathom that I travelled to hear her. I don't think she ever recognized her greatness. This Lucia is the BEST synthesis of acting and singing I've ever seen.)
Wow, her interpretation is INCREDIBLE --- the best I've seen!!! You feel such sympathy for her, and yet you don't want to get too close. And I love her rock-solid E-flat, and the cool way she just punches it out! I daresay, after Sutherland, that's the fullest E-flat I've heard from anyone!
I can remember this performance like it was yesterday, bawling like a baby in up in the fourth ring standing room at the State Theater. God bless youtube for giving us a chance to remember and cherish such exquisite moments!
Wow. .. this is tremendous. Thanks Erin for posting this. Perhaps the finest Lucia I have ever heard. When-- I was in high school -- I heard Gianna sing Lucia at NYCO with Barry McCauley (sp) as the tenor. I felt sorry for him -- because the opera was called Lucia and Gianna showed us all why. . it was tremendous. I still have the program to this day. It had a tremendous impact on me and my future career choice. Brava to the Diva Rolandi.
