I don't think he meant marrying within your race generally is marrying down, I think he meant marrying someone who isn't at the same socio-economic/education/career level as yourself is marrying down. I just came out of a corp case that required numeric interpretation. One can take the same stats the gentleman used for his book and make a case for something totally different. You can think what you like about my comments. Personally I think his stats are suspect but then again it don't really matter to me because I'm married. Seriously speaking off topic,There's really NO reason a man should want to get married in the western civilization of the world.65% of marriages in America end in divorce.And there's no benefit for men to being married knowing that half of everything you ever worked for in life can be taken away in court.(If your good with it)The odds of having a marriage like our grandparents is unlikely in the 20th Century.

The joke is professional women of all races are complaining about not enough marriageable men but yet only black women get focused on. If a guy believes that he has no chance, he is not going to even pursue the situation (in most instances) especially if he can attract other females. Asian Women let it be known that they love WM, while BW typically recite the same foolishness of only being interested in BM. For this reason, WM are less likely to pursue BW.

People keep pointing to the fact that his own wife may not have married him if she took his advice - This man is a Professor at a prestigious university, he has a stable career and lifestyle. This man is not incarcerated and has an education. She would still be marrying a quality man. He is saying to marry quality men. So she would still be taking his advice when marrying him and any black man with a career and an education. Sheesh!

Banks is NOT saying marrying a black man is marrying down, he's basically saying there aren't enough black professional/educated men for all the black professional/educated women, and rather than marry someone professionally/eduactionally beneath you, black women should marry outside their race. As a black woman, I TOTAL appreciate Bank's observations and ideas, however....... I love me a black man!!

Black women should not ever be made to feel obligated to date outside the race. It's not something any woman can do or should do. Many times it's a cultural barrier. But either way, it's their lives. True, the numbers aren't there, but that statistic shouldn't corner them.
