I live in the USA but when I was a kid in the 80's and 90's I used my dad's shortwave radio. We used to pick up the BBC world service faintly and I remember that every hour there would be this really eerie music. It was the sound of a wood block being struck every second and it was just a repeated tone and the broadcaster would say......Welcome to the BBC world service. The time now is one o'clock. Does anybody remember that or know how to hear it again?
Hayton does brilliantly here. I think I'd probably die of a massive heart attack the first time the director said "there is NO VT". Either that or run away. Or cry.
I think people watching this clip were misinformed, like i was....the talkback deal, the newscaster cant hear everything thats going on behind the scenes.
From working in media myself, it looks like the newscaster is kinda ripping and reading, he has the stories and is just going with them...
its the people in the back that dont have their shit together. Im assuming there is someone else in his ear, because there is nobody alive that could read and listen to all that trash at once.
All newsreaders, whether they work for the BBC, ITN or any other UK broadcaster, hear everything that goes on in the gallery. They're on open talkback, not switched.
This is necessary so that they know what's going on without having to be spoken to directly. I've worked on BBC and ITV regional news and a rabble like that over talkback is very common.
In such situations, you have to take your own cues because the director is preoccupied with pulling the programme together.
Was the recording of this edition with talkback kept because it was such a shambles? lol. was there an enquiry into why there were so many problems? Having sat in the gallery during news i know its alway pretty manic but this is baaaad! lol
"Haven't got any scripts Mike!" VT totally saved this show. What a shambles!

Poor Phil! Why are the animations called 'Quantel' and not 'Charisma' as in other BBC talkback clips on youtube from the same era?
