Thanks for writing about very important safety issues in yoga and keeping the public informed that some poses are indeed dangerous. Inhaling and exhaling and feeling the stretch are ignored in an effort to make sure that a particular pose or flow of sequence of moments is achieved. I would like to avoid injury especially considering the extra fees doctors are charging these days which are not covered by insurance. Your long list of benefits of the safe practice of yoga is very encouraging.
UtubePlaza, how the heck were you able to move your hand when you have only have one foot and one hand on the floor in a sideplank? Do you think before you do something? If you stand on one leg and the instructor tell you to step two feet back do you just automatically step two feet back with the foot on the floor? Seriously, if you want check and balance, ask for the instructor creditial. Safe practice means do what you can and not what you can't.
Sounds like William hurt his back because he wasn't practicing of with awareness and was practicing with EGO! If you practice yoga as a dummy then you will injure yourself. Practice with what you are able not going beyond your capability. There are modifications to most posture or alternative postures, ask the instructor. Doctor don't know that you are ill until you tell them so why expect anybody else to know your limitation. UtubePlaza, you said it yourself"without thinking I move my arm...
As a result I injured my shoulder. The pain has never gone away and is always there. This happened three years ago. In final relaxation another yoga instructor pulled my neck away from my axis. Thinking she knew how to relax me better. I sent a letter to the yoga studio owner and he mocked me. Appalled at the lack of integrity the yoga studio owner/instructor showed. May these yoga studios get shut down who lack integrity. There needs to be checks and balances.
Power yoga is dangerous. I was injured by a yoga instructor who is also a massage therapist. While in side plank and on one hand with the other arm extended balancing my body with legs lengthened on the mat. She called out my name to have me move my hand under my shoulder. Without thinking I moved my hand putting all my weight on my shoulder. The instructor did not say lower your knee then move your arm directly under shoulder. Appalled these instructors think they know what's best. As

"yoga can kill..." so does taking a bath and falling asleep. Nice way to hype and sell your book.
