This is amazing. Great video! I guess hydro isn't just for weed anymore. This is clearly the future of growing food. Two new hydro shops just opened in my area, I'm going to check it out.
You can grow about anywhere with a good hydro system. affordablehydroponics.weebly.com has a really nice one that can be used as a ebb and flow, deep water culture or aeroponic unit Pretty neat
Thanks for sharing this great video, Vanessa. I am really amazed on how NY Sunworks has managed to setup a very sophisticated hydroponics system that can actually produce fresh and delicious food crops. I am awed on how they were able to make very good use of such small space on the building rooftop and without wasting resources. Vertical farming is really the true essence of urban farming which means putting to quality use any small area while producing the finest food crops.
I thought you had the change the water every 2 weeks or so, so how is it that you keep using the same water repeatedly? Do you just keep mixing in nutrients periodically? If so, how do you know how much of what to add?
i'm a fan of aquaponics and the organic movement. however, I would like to point out that reducing Co2 emissions is a fraud. Plants breathe Co2 and release O2, oxygen. Al gore is set to make billions of dollars from "carbon credits" which would be traded on carbon markets. If the seas were actually going to rise 20 ft, why did Al Gore buy a multimillion dollar mansion on the beach in california??
@ParadiseSurplus nature.com/nature/journal/v455/n7210/full/nature07276.html If you approach agriculture with the intention of building soil, your methods should, hopefully, fix carbon.
I noticed black gunk un the bottom line of the NFT systems, Do you guys use chillers on your hydrponic systems? Because it doesent matter what ur growing (veg or flower) you need to keep that water at 67 degrees or the roots are going to rot in the warm water...
I am a hydroponics expert, 30 years in hydroponics...
@archuletajustin Root rot is caused by lack of dissolved oxygen, not temperature. Warm water holds less DO, so if you would like to grow in the 70s or 80s, you just need more oxygenation. I guarantee it.
I thought Telapia was a vegetarian fish. Are they actually omnivores? Do they eat worms naturally? They could certainly be fed with the cuttings from plants. Fascinating piece.
@thejunkman glad you figured out for us, why dont we all just go home and forget about it. And to think people are actually doing this, I hope they know there not farming and they cant make any money.

Vanessa! My name is Sergey. I am from Russia. As your success? The main costs in hydroponic farm - it is electricity. However, it is here in America cheaper. The proposal to use water as a source of energy is reasonable. I found several articles on this subject (in Russian only). It can be used in greenhouses located on the water (on the barge, etc.). General theme is very interesting. Sorry for my English.

Hey Vanessa..tell ur freind there that if there is any current in the water under the barge , they could probably use it to drive small turbines(kinda like underwater wind generators :).) and not need the gas generator at all..since water flows 24hrs a day..even if the wind isnt blowing or the suns not shining.peace.
slowfinger2 Talk about buzzwords.. What do you mean by AGRIBUSINESS? The family run farm BUSINESS that's been DEGRADING their land with UNSUSTAINABLE (needing more and moreresource input to survive) monoculture for the last hundred years? The FREERANGE egg farm BUSINESS that lets the chickens out of the barn once in awhile? The local organic farmers market BUSINESS? Lot's of people throw popularised words around..
It's a great source of nitrogen, buddy... Fish emulsion is the proper term, though. You do have to add other nutrients to the water that plants need while keeping a solution that is still healthy for the fish.
People, stop using the buzzword sustainable. It means to maintain things the way they are. To hold. To sustain a musical note. It does not mean renewable, or advancing growth. It is a catchword used by the powers that be to control your life. Do you want to move ahead or stay in sustained limbo?
Time to wakey, wakey.
Go growers. Let's take away the power of agribusiness to rule us with food.
Mostly what I want to know is what type of hydroponic irrigation is best for each stage of plant growth. We choose between NFT, ebb and flow, drip irrigation, aeroponics including ultrasonic teflon ceramic membranes. Some setups use lots of inert growing materials while others use almost none at all. It gets complicated to understand which system results in maximum root health and plant growth. Think I'll start with simple ebb & flo and move to high tech later.
here in Texas green houses have become obsolete, because they become raging muthafuking infernos. We had one on my school and as soon as i walked in there i coulnt breath...And both fans were on!! and those fans r big! IT WAS A GREEN OVEN!! I COULD HAVE COOKED COOKIES IN THERE IF I WANTED TOO!
well what plants were they growing? Ive visited a tropical houseplant nursery 60 miles east of LA and it was the most humid/hot environment Ive ever been in. Maybe the summer months are too hot in Texas but most of the year seems manageable.
yea i gess its true during other seasons but wow summer here is rediculus, and ive never heard of a plant growing inside an oven, this green house i went to was not humid and i could realy bake cookies in there, then again it was a cheap school so im gessing that green house wasnt working like it should...
it took me 6 months to figure out how to grow the best yields, people skip the most important factors, a big resevoir for roots to grow. instead of choking them by putting them in small pots and close together...jeeez and 10x more light !
That is not necessary. Overpopulation theory results from people not understanding the current state of technology.
We have the resources today to provide for everyone on the planet without the huge impact that we do currently. It's just not profitable in a monetary system.
@CondemnedToExile while there is no doubt that better tech can feed us longer than Maltus had expected, the question is whether a planet covered in farms and fishfarms is where we want to love. We are too many. Either we reduce our numbers or we leave somewhere else, and apply these technolgies there.
I doubt "a planet covered in farms and fish farms" would ever be a problem for two reasons: 1. This is just one example of a sustainable food source. Others should be used accordingly based on the best method for that location. 2. It would be very unlikely that these farms would be out in the open, unless it proved to be a necessity. The great thing about aquaponics and hydroponics is that they can be located indoors and as a result stacked vertically, thus requiring less space.
Sorry, you are absolutely incorrect. The earth cannot support the billions of humans now on it. The human species is stripping the earth of all materials and life and exterminating all other life forms. Your anthropocentrism and faith in technoutopian solutions are part of the problem. Overpopulation is not a theory- it's a biological fact. We have exceeded earth's carrying capacity and are on track to ruin the only living planet proven to exist in the universe.
You are rite that the Earth AS IT IS cannot support the population however with technology like this it CAN. if every city would create a hydroponics farm it would feed everyone. Even in places where you couldn't normally grow food you can with this technology. there is no reason why people should go hungry with a little brains and elbow grease the world could be fed.
@xeromaru "if every city would create a hydroponics farm it would feed everyone"
That's a big if, and very unrealistic. Sadly, there's no technology to remove the profit motive. Are you aware how quickly fish populations are declining? It's not the bears demanding more fish! Are you aware of the Texas sized islands of plastic in the Pacific and Atlantic? Feeding the world isn't the only issue. Sure we CAN feed everyone, then they'll just breed more and it's back to square one.
@CondemnedToExile there will be overpopulation according to ANY theory, it is mathematical fact that w will run out of space with our exponential increase, or do you believe maybe that the earth has infinite space? No such thing.
@ugotpimp Yes and not giant "Big Brother" corporations, either though I'm sure they'll finally "jump on the bandwagon" once the little guys demonstrate how practical this all is.
This is very smart. Aquaponics is the way to go though. However separating solids from the fish to breakdown and feed plants without pumping fish tank water through is the key to adding required nutrients for all types of plants.
what kind of college class would be best to learn the most about plants and hydroponics? i definitely loved the video and learn alot from the website.... any other tips? thanks
im calling my senator and demanding these people get some dam stimulus money no strings attached this is simple amazing realy give them more money and the more solar panles and funding to build smaller community gardens elsewhere if we need green jobs i demand these people do the hiring
@vanessaraevideo I live in St Louis, and would be happy to run one of these on the Mississippi! So if you figure out how to get a grant for one of these. I'm all for it!
@283inc Many things will need to be changed before our government will consider funding hydro and aquaponic agriculture. For one we need more green minded and enviromentalist politicians. In Europe many types of urban agricutural research such as this system for example has already been funded and really benefiting the econmies of many European countries especially Germany and the U.K. Many German enviromental engineers have already begun huge vertical gardening projects.
@283inc If it is a good and economical idea with the possibility to be scaled up it will get plenty of private funding, everyone is looking for a good investment. No need to get the incompetent and corrupt government into it, that would just ruin it for sure. Think of all of the retarded regulations and special interests that would get attached to it if the government got involved.
this is really cool, what do you do about combating pests such as white flies?

@CondemnedToExile while there is no doubt that better tech can feed us longer than Maltus had expected, the question is whether a planet covered in farms and fishfarms is where we want to love. We are too many. Either we reduce our numbers or we leave somewhere else, and apply these technolgies there.

@mrplease66

@GoldHealth
Instead of ranting how bout stating some facts.

No such thing.

awesome!
leave it to the 20% of entrepenures to solve any human problem & not a giant big brother government
ugotpimp 2 years ago
@ugotpimp Yes and not giant "Big Brother" corporations, either though I'm sure they'll finally "jump on the bandwagon" once the little guys demonstrate how practical this all is.
Israel has been doing this for years.

This is very smart. Aquaponics is the way to go though. However separating solids from the fish to breakdown and feed plants without pumping fish tank water through is the key to adding required nutrients for all types of plants.

@vanessaraevideo I live in St Louis, and would be happy to run one of these on the Mississippi! So if you figure out how to get a grant for one of these. I'm all for it!
Thanks - J

@283inc Many things will need to be changed before our government will consider funding hydro and aquaponic agriculture. For one we need more green minded and enviromentalist politicians. In Europe many types of urban agricutural research such as this system for example has already been funded and really benefiting the econmies of many European countries especially Germany and the U.K. Many German enviromental engineers have already begun huge vertical gardening projects.
MattyTheMole 1 year ago
@283inc you'de be better off making a pitch to investors. Its not unheard of to make 50-200% profit from a growing operation in just 2-3 years
rcacad 1 year ago
@283inc If it is a good and economical idea with the possibility to be scaled up it will get plenty of private funding, everyone is looking for a good investment. No need to get the incompetent and corrupt government into it, that would just ruin it for sure. Think of all of the retarded regulations and special interests that would get attached to it if the government got involved.
