In the 10 minutes u took to film this, hours you took to edit it + add the text, and the time you spent driving to each of the bridges... you could have done something much more productive about it
How's that petition going? The feds barely kick in enough money for the bridges we use daily. Removal of abandoned bridges are the least of their worries.
I think Gary and any other city for that matter have bigger fish to fry. The bridge you featured in your video did not appear to be unsafe at all. You want to talk about an unsafe bridge, once I was delivering a cement truck to Missouri and I went over a bridge with concrete so rotted you could see right through it in many places. I was in a convoy of about 9 cement trucks and 3 of us were on the bridge at the time. I don't scare easy but I was scared that day.
Here in the UK, we prefer our disused railway bridges to remain standing, as they make any possible future reinstatement of the railway (sorry, railroad) easier and cheaper to achieve.
Over this side of the Atlantic, we have a perception that all Americans are huge because they don't get any exercise as you drive your cars everywhere. Maybe if this railroad was reinstated, the people of Gary would walk to their railroad station to catch a train someplace, instead of driving?
Believe it or not, most bridge pilings will last around 50-70 years, and they can't be dangerous or ready to collapse, because it is required by federal law to get the bridges examined once a year.
This reminds me of a co-worker who freaks out even if our supply of keys (Tiny pieces of metal) is off by say 2-3 pcs. He actually shakes thinking the management will fire people for this.
haha @ moaning about 100 year old bridges. . . . We've got bridges 4 or 5 times older than that in the uk with traffic still happily crossing them. Get a fucking grip ya daft cunt
Just because they are rusted and weatherd, you think somethings wrong with them. keep your fat ass on the couch eat your bon bons, watch your soap operas, and keep your nose out of other people shit. If you got the time to look at bridges and put it on y tube you need a job!
I work at a railroad, and those bridges are in good shape to not fall down. Now I wouldn't put a train on them. And the FRA would stop me from doing that. But they all are built to last
ok children. Let's all gather 'round, and find out if they are safe, or not. They certainly don't have to be eye sores. 'bridge' people, (f'n union) too busy sitting behind their desks, casting their pointed fingers down the line, till it points back at them, then the circle continutes still. get rid of the union crap, and see actual people work, and get work done.
Gary was on the mains of the Penn, NYC, B&O and Wabash to name few. Gary is located southeast of Chicago meaning that the largest railroads in the east sent a very large number of trains through town per day. These bridges would have also held the weight of some of the largest locomotives built. I would be worried if I was going to try to take a train across the bridge but definitely not driving a car under one. Stick to your day job, this film shows you lack civil engineering skills.
This guy doesn't know squat about structures. From what I've seen here, the only problem is this guy needs to get a freggin life. Go home and think up something worth bitching about.

Looks like your average, everyday, seriously over-engineered railroad bridge to me. That thing will still be standing just fine when the bridges over the interstate freeways are in their third incarnation.
I wrote a small book about historic railroad lines,That bridge is in good condition.I've many worse then that.Modern bridges have more to be scared of.

Sooooo..... You're an engineer? You've decided these are unsafe? You're a moron. I see nothing that makes these bridges about to collapse. I think they're part of Gary's history and add charm. REALLY!!?? Your worried about that bridge falling down? I'd be more worried about your house falling down or the plastic screws on your automobile failing and causing the body to seperate from the frame. That bridge was built when this country knew how to build things to last. If anything, it's OVERBUILT. You could drive 10 semi trucks into that bridge at once and it would still be standing. Go find an abandoned house to complain about and stop using up precious government resources and time
@friscofan4501 its people like this that ruin ourcountry all worried about shit they dont understand they think somethings wrong so they try to fix it and not get a second opinion about it "just take it down its unsafe" those bridges werebuilt to last that wood is mostlikly still stronger than the wood to build a home now
This is laughable. Gary, Indiana has more pressing needs like this. Hey, how about cleaning up all the gutted, burned out buildings being used as crackhouses first. There is no evidence this bridge is in danger of failure... Gary is giving Detroit a run for it's money when it comes to burned out ghettoes
Most of the bridges you show are in no worse shape than the highway bridges still being driven over daily. In general railroad structures are built much stronger than highway bridges.
I think this guy cries too much and you know Rail Roads own those bridges they may be on a waiting list to be restored or on the rails to trails program why have them destroyed forever
@ jaccooker I will only say this many states don't let railroads abandon bridges and not pay any taxes and then store rolling stock on the track when it suit's them. Nor does after abandoning the structures that pose a threat to the public over state highways not use federal dollars to remove the immanent dangers that they pose to the public.
Only in inner cities will you see such outright hatred to the point one cut his on nose off to spite his face!
@Sconiers get out of gray plain and simple these bridges are nothing if your livin in gray in fact im scared for you i hope you havint been robbed in gray shot stabbed killed etc
HUMM. Do these bridges have up to date load tests and inspections on them? If they do, then you are just pissin up a rope. Some of those "Remember the Past" pics look like foreign 3rd world shitholes that don't care if people get killed or not. Research your complaint before you go to higher levals. Or else you got as much of a chance as a fart in a hurricane.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I love the old railroad stuff, especially the abandoned tracks make great ways to walk around the region. I've grown up next to railroad tracks and I would hate to seem them wiped out of the community.
If the structure is truly in danger of collapse, then that's another thing but those bridges were designed to support hundreds of tons. If they don't have trains rolling over them, there's virtually no chance of them falling from their own weight.
Gary, like Detroit and other rust belt cities, appears to have too many problems and too little money. This ex-Detroiter finds great sadness and hopelessness in such videos as these. Well-chosen music carries its own anguish.
Listening to the logic I guess when some kids paint graffiti all over the place in your community or persons erects something like a 10 foot fence in his front yard in a residential hood then the same applies.
Forget about using highway beautification funds to remove eyesores in inner cities and keep the suburbs all spiffy & clean. Plant trees and put in lights and new sidewalks to nowhere in the middle of the corn fields!
Boring... thought there was an actual collapse. Those bridges won't be coming down anytime soon. They were built to hold lots of weight, and most of those roads don't look very busy, so if they come down when no one is around....who cares. Get a life and stop being a pest.
In many states there is a fund to remove old structures like this but not here in Indiana . They sit while transportation dollars are spent on urban sprawl.
Where are the promised stimulus trillions being spent?
I must base decision on assumptions as you neglect to provide any useful information whatsoever as to the actual age, method of construction, abandonment, or other factors surrounding these bridges.
Summation: Without accurate information on your part, you are just trying to stir up emotional interest and indignation about an issue that does not exist. Go get some facts and make an effort of it. Be careful though; stir up too much and the people may find out the real reasons behind it all
Based of the construction and apparant condition of the area around the bridge as well as the lack of flood deposit and erosion effects; I would hazard a guess that these bridges were in use up until the early 1970's and therefore inspected and maintained. As they are not being used now, their structural integrity should remain functional, barring human interference or and act of nature, for at least 150 more years.
Even with the poor camera work and lighting, I was able to notice a few things about your "dilapidated and dangerous" bridging. The first bridge was constructed out of solid 12 in. treated posting and 12 x 12 in. beaming, with continuous 4x 8 lap reinforcement. The soil matrix appears to be compressed fill with an alluvial silt clay base. The structural steel span uses a box framing method common to 1920-1940's construction with track inlay that appears to be in working condition.
if u think that bridge is bad then shit u should see our wooden train bridge back in my woods... stuff rocks and bolts are falling out. moves up and down like a wild turkey...but csx dont give a flyin fuck =] lol
Dude, go find something that's a real threat to worry about...like the hot water heater in your basement exploding. Or what they're putting our drinking water that allows it to make rainbows when sprayed in the sun. Or how you're gonna get that chip out of your backside that the Feds put in there to track YOUR EVERY MOVE!
those beams arent rotting. I doubt you even know anything about structures and how to build anything that can withstand any sort of weight. That bridge will probably look they same way long after you are dead and gone.
Gimme a break, the steel girts on these bridges are massive. Don't get me going on the wood, we have oak 6 x 6 posts holding up our whole valley in the mines. Get a hatchet and take a whack, betcha those supports are solid
Basically heavy weight. Think of massive locomotives and 150 car long trains going over them. Each locomotive weighs 60 Tons and each car is filled to 48 tons.
Interesting hyperbole. A mixture of current and historical photos all designed to create a misleading picture. Obviously your 'message' lacks credability. Perhaps the persuit of private companies that have an historical responsibility to maintain disused structures would be a more appropriate approach.
Hey I just wanted to let you know that there are a few bridges in Greene County, Indiana where I am from and one of them I used to live pretty close to...and they have repaired it several times over the years..yes I do very strongly agree that tressle needs to be maintained better than it is..i am going to get a video of similar things in this area soon and post them
Actually other than the bridge with the corrided steel footings those are all in relatively good shape. The are bridges are around here in worse shape and they still carry daily freight trains over them. Why tear them down, why not refurbish them for use as a recreational trail?
Are you trying to say they haven't been maintained for 100 years? Just because they are shabby doesn't make them unsafe. What's your engineering experience or are you just a wanker?
Ahhh wut ever man, i say leav'm there... i like history. But if wut your saying is true, and they realy are in that bad of shape. then just wait it out till the collaps. You'll be able to say i told you so, specialy if sum1 gets hurt. then the state government and shit would get in so much shit
there's still a wooden bridge on the IC/CN in Chapaign/Urbana that still used on the mainline. I'm honestly confused as you are but I guess they're ok.
If the lines are unused than take up the trackage and convert them into walking/biking trails... as for the bridges... they in good enough shape to last another hundred years.
If you know what you were talking about maybe people would listen but you have no idea the engineering that goes into them bridges.
PS your music selection leaves alot to be desired.
I thought u caught a live footage of these viaducts about to collapse? and r u aware that you clip finishes at (7:51min)? Is this the same route that goes over the south shore line?
After last winter they are looking even worse and the concrete is crumbling if the state can spend millions of dollars cutting grass along the highway for beautification they surely can do something with these bridges.
Duck is complpetly right. Im sorrywheels069 but the bridges are fine. It would be very evident if the bridges were in any way a threat to the community.
Dear lord those aren't bad at all. You guys must not know much about construction or materials. Look, that wood is fine it is faded and has some moss on it, it is soaked with creosote and is fine not rotted. Then steel is fine it looks rough cause the paint has fallen off but that rust is just surface you could take steel wool and clean it off with some elbow grease. Look spend time researching. That concrete is fine nothing wrong with it, I will agree the road under them do need work. Mike
Wow some of those bridges look like they'd collapse by someone just walking over it. I mean one good snowfall and CRASH!!! lives lost. They should either restore them or just tear them down but one of the two has to be done fast before innocent lives are lost!!!
Duck is complpetly right. Im sorrywheels069 but the bridges are fine. It would be very evident if the bridges were in any way a threat to the community.
Wow, those are in bad shape. I think they should be saved though. Back the way they were. I wonder if the bridges down here in the Indy area are that bad. Good luck with everything, but fight to save them!
One particular travesty is occurring in Indiana, where Ball State students are filming a puff piece movie on the "National Road" (U.S. 40) in Indiana, to the tune of $121,000 from the Federal Highway Trust Fund.
That's just straight up frightening, something needs to be done before people start getting hurt. Good job you've done here documenting this for all to see...I don't know how your local powers that be sleep at night knowing this kind of neglect is going on.

Ahh, how good it is to be naive...
Sure, federal law requires regular inspections.
But, they don't like to pay for it, and when the department doesn't have the money to them, they don't get done.
The I-35 bridge collapse several years ago got inspected. It collapsed. (I-35W I believe)
The GWB near Manhattan. That is still open. The politician who lets it be closed, will lose voters.

Such incredibly wonderful music. Tchaikovsky 6th Symphony. Final movement.
Not much wrong withose bridges. Superficial issues with most.
But could not see detail. Learn to manually adjust exposure and show detail.
Many photos worthless at revealing problems.
Should have continued the music to the end.

Most of the bridges you show are in no worse shape than the highway bridges still being driven over daily. In general railroad structures are built much stronger than highway bridges.
Dockshund 1 year ago 2
I think this guy cries too much and you know Rail Roads own those bridges they may be on a waiting list to be restored or on the rails to trails program why have them destroyed forever
Themaskedman1245452 1 year ago
@ jaccooker I will only say this many states don't let railroads abandon bridges and not pay any taxes and then store rolling stock on the track when it suit's them. Nor does after abandoning the structures that pose a threat to the public over state highways not use federal dollars to remove the immanent dangers that they pose to the public.
Only in inner cities will you see such outright hatred to the point one cut his on nose off to spite his face!

@Sconiers get out of gray plain and simple these bridges are nothing if your livin in gray in fact im scared for you i hope you havint been robbed in gray shot stabbed killed etc
BuBoNiCcHrOnIc91 4 months ago
HUMM. Do these bridges have up to date load tests and inspections on them? If they do, then you are just pissin up a rope. Some of those "Remember the Past" pics look like foreign 3rd world shitholes that don't care if people get killed or not. Research your complaint before you go to higher levals. Or else you got as much of a chance as a fart in a hurricane.
jacooker 1 year ago 2

I retired from the railroad go BS somebody else!
Sconiers 1 year ago
fine. They were made to hold a train. there has never been a case of where a abandoned Railway bridge has fallen down
TrainGuy18 1 year ago
Boring... thought there was an actual collapse.

Building a yellow brick road to suburbia !

Be careful though; stir up too much and the people may find out the real reasons behind it all
tacops77 1 year ago
Based of the construction and apparant condition of the area around the bridge as well as the lack of flood deposit and erosion effects; I would hazard a guess that these bridges were in use up until the early 1970's and therefore inspected and maintained. As they are not being used now, their structural integrity should remain functional, barring human interference or and act of nature, for at least 150 more years.
tacops77 1 year ago
Even with the poor camera work and lighting, I was able to notice a few things about your "dilapidated and dangerous" bridging. The first bridge was constructed out of solid 12 in. treated posting and 12 x 12 in. beaming, with continuous 4x 8 lap reinforcement. The soil matrix appears to be compressed fill with an alluvial silt clay base. The structural steel span uses a box framing method common to 1920-1940's construction with track inlay that appears to be in working condition.

Something the maker of this film does not realize.
Those railroad bridges were built to handle LARGE TONNAGE at one time.
Now that they handle nothing, it'll probably take 200 more years to fall down.
Hiei2k7 2 years ago 30
@Hiei2k7
Noob question; what is Tonnage?
sirdorkster 7 months ago
@sirdorkster
Basically heavy weight. Think of massive locomotives and 150 car long trains going over them. Each locomotive weighs 60 Tons and each car is filled to 48 tons.
Hiei2k7 7 months ago
@Hiei2k7
That makes sense. Thank you.
sirdorkster 7 months ago
@sirdorkster A ton, 2000 lbs. Tonnage is a descriptor for something that can carry a very heavy load without giving a precise measurement..

alright, i'm sorry about the mf but your title is misleading. those bridges look rough.

lowell191 2 years ago 6
Interesting hyperbole. A mixture of current and historical photos all designed to create a misleading picture. Obviously your 'message' lacks credability. Perhaps the persuit of private companies that have an historical responsibility to maintain disused structures would be a more appropriate approach.

Hey I just wanted to let you know that there are a few bridges in Greene County, Indiana where I am from and one of them I used to live pretty close to...and they have repaired it several times over the years..yes I do very strongly agree that tressle needs to be maintained better than it is..i am going to get a video of similar things in this area soon and post them
test69monkey 3 years ago
Actually other than the bridge with the corrided steel footings those are all in relatively good shape. The are bridges are around here in worse shape and they still carry daily freight trains over them. Why tear them down, why not refurbish them for use as a recreational trail?
JJ4H340 3 years ago
Are you trying to say they haven't been maintained for 100 years? Just because they are shabby doesn't make them unsafe. What's your engineering experience or are you just a wanker?
CGT867 3 years ago 37
Ahhh wut ever man, i say leav'm there... i like history. But if wut your saying is true, and they realy are in that bad of shape. then just wait it out till the collaps. You'll be able to say i told you so, specialy if sum1 gets hurt. then the state government and shit would get in so much shit

there's still a wooden bridge on the IC/CN in Chapaign/Urbana that still used on the mainline. I'm honestly confused as you are but I guess they're ok.

what's with amazing grace??!!
DaftStrings 3 years ago
If the lines are unused than take up the trackage and convert them into walking/biking trails... as for the bridges... they in good enough shape to last another hundred years.
If you know what you were talking about maybe people would listen but you have no idea the engineering that goes into them bridges.
PS your music selection leaves alot to be desired.
