I believe that they wanted to introduce the master emerald in sonic 2 with Tails as it's guardian but the idea was scrapped but they wanted the idea again so in sonic3 and knuckles they brought it back with knuckles as the new guardian.

there's a theorie that because of the tails monotor that this zone would take place between wing fortress zone and death egg zone. which would show what happened to tails after his plane crashed.

The theory about the Tails monitor is false because ever since the very early prototype the same featured in Nick Arcade its object placement in other words had this level been complete there would have been a Sonic monitor there. From a interview by Yuji Naka that this level was meant to be unlocked after getting the chaos emeralds and this would be were Super Sonic got his powers.

I think "Perfect Bonus" is when you get every ring in an act. Since HPZ2 only has, like, 7 rings, and they're all near the beginning, it's pretty easy to get that bonus.

That's not the master emerald.

It may look like it, but one of the makers of Hidden Palace Zone claims that the 'Master Emerald' did not exist when he made it. The Emerald was simply a decorative object for Sonic to jump on to reach the pipe underneath, like those grey blocks over the pipes in Chemical Plant.

Although Yuji Naka claimed that HPZ would be the place that Sonic learns to go Super... it was never dictated that this was "the Master Emerald", but a level designer claimed it to be a breakable block. However, it was never programmed in any version of Sonic 2 to actually break. This is just a hack which implemented this behavior based on the designer's word.

I love this level. It had the best music in the game. I don't see why they couldn't have finished it, they were pretty close with this one. The emerald-like thing was supposed to be a breakable object only. The woman who was in charge of designing the level said so in an interview on the Sonic 2 Beta website. However, I wouldn't doubt it if it had a big part in the creation of the master emerald. Seeing as how they used the level in Sonic and Knuckles, which is where the Master Emerald is.

It has been confirmed by original programmers that the so-called "Master Emerald" depicted here is not the real deal. It was originally designed as a plug for that tube, that's all.

Also note that this level *is* available on the actual Sonic 2 cart, but it is only random, garbled data, so it's nothing near playable. They took all of the data and pointers out of the cart, but forgot to take the level itself out when they scrapped it.

You can't. Hidden Palace is only in the beta and in hacked roms. This one, for example, is Sonic 2 Long, an hack by Hachelle-Bee.

Hold up it is playable all you need is a game genie. first enter code ACLA-ATD4. then enter stage select cheat(sounds 19 65 9 17 at sound test) at the title screen press a start.debug (sounds 1 9 9 2 1 1 2 4 at stage select) also needs to be enabled. at stage select enter death egg.
