  • Just an absolute genius with lyrics. paul McCartney sites him as his favorite song writer.

  • Who are the other guys in the band aside from Liam?

  • @Helterskelter4 Isn't that Elroy on guitar?

  • @rarelyzippo It's Liam. Cover art for the album sleeve was a picture by Elroy that Neil used. No idea who the other guys in the band here are but seen them on a few of the clips on here for the Try whistling this tour

  • Co written by the main songwriter from Midnight Oil - who would've of thought?

  • lyrically brilliant and with others great all around musician. I love this guy.

  • any relation to tim finn? bro's?

  • @TrashcanBoogie Yes. Tim Finn and Neil Finn are brothers. Tim is the older one.

  • Such a genius. A simple, fluid poet and songwriter, so satisfying listening to him.

  • This man is a musical genius. He's been doing this for all of 30years..or more..Consistent astonishing quality and originality through all the musical manifestations from Split Enz day to the present. To say he's on a par with Dylan,Neil Young or Lennon+McCartney is no exaggeration..

  • the best.

  • Makes me cry and vibrate with joy at the same time.

  • He is a wonderful songwriter. Love this album, his other soloalbums and Crowded House records. 4 seasons in one day! Private Universe! Jesus!

  • 5 people can't whistle

  • troll, trolling (angling by drawing a baited line through the water) or troll (sing loudly and without inhibition) or troll (praise or celebrate in song)

  • This song was used in the movie "In The Land of Women" that's where I heard it for the 1st time - I like it!

  • @YOUrmypal68 i know, right. the scene she's in the car & she makes a u-turn because she realizes tht she finally knows the guy she wants. lol & she headed to the mall.

  • @obunkystaind Yup, that's the part! I also like the scene when Meg Ryan (in her hospital bed) reads his letter...those were very nice words he wrote

  • This kid is what would happen if Lennon and McCartney actually conceived and created a new songwriter.

  • All music is primitive, including this one. I don not lower myself to this type of entertainment.

  • @WannaGoToSuckFest Has anyone told you that you are stuck up and over all disgusting? If they haven't then you are stuck up and over all disgusting. If you don't like music why the hell are you looking at a music video. Music is an art that has existed before human kind ever did and it still does. What the hell leads you to believe it is primitive? It evolves with culture and our very existence. I hate ignorant stuck up people...

  • @x0shade0x Music is an expression by a person so its not possible to have music before mankind.

  • @x0shade0x Also in a very odd way music is very primitive, because by using the definition that music and other arts are an expression of a human, it therefore is highly primitive because mankind is primitive when comparing to the time that planet earth has held and nurtured other life.

  • @WannaGoToSuckFest Then why are you here? Music is universal, in fact it's eternal! There are angels whose only purpose is to sing worship to God. It is in the human dna and if you don't have it I feel sorry for you because your dna must be damaged. Not everyone is talented but most like some kind of music. So go on, now tell me there is no such thing as God! I'll just ignore you anyway.

  • @Key300 Religion is the most primitive thing still existing in this world. Without it, we'd be at-least two times more advanced. Tell me one good thing that any religion has done, without decimating another idea that would've made more sense. In every religion, besides philosophic ideas without god, something has been destroyed just because it would be non-beneficiary to them/it right at the moment. Tell me one scientific thing or machine that has birthed out of any god? It's a persons idea.

  • @WannaGoToSuckFest Got a cite to back up your assertion?

  • @Key300 If you're trolling me, I've been trolled. :(

  • @Key300 lol so many wrong things with this comment.

  • @Key300 Music is not part of our DNA just to let you know, also music does not have to include anything to do with angels (lol) or god, a universal definition to music or any of the other arts is that, its a personal expression by using natural sounds or images.

  • genius....

  • GENIUS

  • Neil, I salute you. Pop/Rock seem almost pejorative when defining this among other magnum opi (please excuse my appalling Latin) you have conducted/performed. Be sure to include Belfast on your next CH/solo/SE tour! Don't forget to bring Sharon, Liam, Elroy et al as well! You won't regret I promise!

  • This is one of my favorite Neil Finn songs, but I'd never heard or seen this performance. What a genius. What an inspiration.

  • Grande artista! Lunga vita a Neil Finn.

  • @ebz92 you are amazing with words you words are powerful yet subtle

  • if you are still listening to this try the vinyl version - sign up at petitionsonline hifinn

  • What a song !!! The end of the song is amazing !!! Love it !

  • "And if the gods desert us now i'll turn this chapel into flames

and if someone tries to hurt you I will put myself in your place."

Brilliant as can be. Throat lumps!

  • This song is soooo good and this performance makes me so moved, I can't but cry when hearing it. Neil Finn is amazing!

  • He is known here, some of us loved him since the Split Enz days ... For me, this record is up there as the greatest of the 90's along with Under the Pink and Teenager of the Year

  • THE END is the best!!! the rhythm just shifts :)

"...if I could never be w/ you, I'd rather have a different face...

...& if I could never be w/ you, I'd rather be a drift in space..."

  • Neil cannot write a bad song

  • And my words are ringing in your ear, drawing your attention now to all the things that you ignore, if i cant be with you i would have a different face.........and if someone tried to hurt you I would put myself in your place.

  • you just defined the audience

  • So who can tell me about it? it's a bit stalkery at the beginning there:

"But you'll succumb now as I stroke your back, I'm the best that you know...And every time you want to leave/You give us both another chance"

And then I thought he may be gay "He said come here as he pushed me down" and then someone was wearing high heels...so what's the story?

  • the "He said come here, and he pushed me down, impossible to do"

comes from an argument Neil had with Crowded House member Paul Hester in Italy. Paul was purposely annoying Neil on stage so Neil put his guitar through Pauls drum. Paul cracked it as they went off stage and pushed Neil through a wire door. As Paul pushed down Neil, he said "COME HERE" hence the "impossible to do"

  • I love the piano, sounds so hauntingly beautiful.

  • great voice, love the ending!

  • great I say ..

  • And if someone tried to hurt you I would put myself in your place. Beautiful song Neil. Thank you

  • It's from 2001... from the DVD 'live at 54 west sessions"

  • So pretty . . .

  • you want a beautiful song??neils ur man!!

  • And every time you think of me

I hope you think of true love

  • oh my god lol

i was borned on the day this album was released

  • borned?...

  • Best love song ever written. Done. Selfless...never appears verbally....like this.

    The result is only years.

  • Indeed, it truly is the best...

  • Gosto muito dessa musica :)

  • Genius.

  • I truly love the ending of this song i listen through all of it just to get to that moment..pure beauty.

  • stunning version of a stunning song

  • I love this song:)....Neil Finn has amaaaazing songs and beautiful voice:):)

  • Neil Finn is amazing. Another amazing Kiwi got me hooked onto Neil and his bro.

  • unbelievable...especially the last couple of lines. breathtaking <3

  • this is a great music dvd, btw. buy it, throw it on - you don't even have to watch.

  • i, greg, love this song and all kiwi artists in general

  • i absolutely love this song.

    seriously.

  • If someone tries to hurt you I will put myself in your place!

  • Had this record for an age cuz I always heard something in this guy. Finally took it out of the celophane this weekend and it hasn't been out of the player since. Looked at the date and I am ten years late figuring out what an incredible guy this is.

  • Dammit I wanted whistling!

  • Gorgeous. Thanks for posting.

  • Awesome as always. The best singer/songwriter in the world.

  • Sooooooo hauntingly beautiful! Neil Finn's talent is absolutely unsurpassed!!! 5 stars!!

  • i ESPECIALLY love the last stanza

  • hey i actually thought only tim plays the piano and neil mainly guitar... this proved me wrong. this sounds a lot darker than most of his songs, but i hear that the whole album "try whistling this" ís in that spirit.

  • Neil Finn is an unbelieveable songwriter.

  • Missed a lyric.

    Brilliant nevertheless

  • EXCELLENCE..... What more can I say?

  • he sounded beautiful there.

  • This was pulled off of the DVD Neil Finn- "Sessions at West 54th", year: 2000, Sony Music, & the song is from the same-titled album. My much-treasured DVD has at least 15 songs that he performed w/ , as it says on the box, "Liam", & like Try Whistling This (album), is a class performance. Intense!

  • another proper love song....

  • Yep, It's definitely Liam.I saw him in the band on the "whistle" tour 'bout 1997

  • Liam did tour with Neil, I saw him/both

  • pretty sure that is his son elroy not liam... you should check out liam's music... extremely talented too!

  • It's definitely older son Liam! Liam toured with dad Neil on this 1998 tour. Today's Liam is 10 years older and looks much different today. I agree Liam's music is great and he's a true talent. Neil will always be my fave :)

  • Liam is 15 years old here, if this was Elroy in 1998 he would have been 9 years old. Elroy tours with his dad in Crowded House now.

  • beautiful!

  • we all have favorite musicians. he is mine.

  • the most beautiful music ever made takes me to another place

  • i listen this song and instantly im in another world. amazing tune my favourite pop composer

  • Could someone please explain to me why Neil isn't known in the US as the songwriting genius he is? You don't know how many times I've been closing up at my bar job, playing Neil, and people go, "Hey, WHO is this?"

    "Neil Finn."

    "Never heard of 'em."

    "Remember Crowded House?"

    "Sort of."

    "'Don't Dream It's Over'?"

    "Oh yeah! That eighties band!"

[SNDFX: My head exploding with frustration.]

It's like trying to explain to people that "Sledgehammer" was not Peter Gabriel's only song.

  • not sure why myself? But i'm from the u.s. and think he's a amazing and his lyrics are genius.

Only have his One All album and love it.

He has a very distinct voice. I always know its him even if i've never hard the song before.

  • I think he's not as appreciated in the US market because he's doesn't fit the sterotypical over-produced mediocre music that gets any promotional exposure there. Neill is brilliant...a shining star.

  • Took the words right outta my mouth. Neil Finn, a helluva piece of as... uh, talent!

  • @ErnieDanzigYEAH or that Bad Bad Leroy Brown wasn't Jim Croce's only song

  • @ErnieDanzigYEAH NZ is made of Neil and Tim Finn!!!Remember Split Enz!!

  • @ErnieDanzigYEAH absolutely right underapriciated band/artist shame on everyone not knowing em

  • @ErnieDanzigYEAH I don't know for sure but i would guess it's because he only wants true music lovers people like yourself to spread the word!

  • @ErnieDanzigYEAH Because the state of what gets played on mainstream radio these days--esp. in the US is underwhelming and sad and driven by corporate suits. TG for internet and a few remaining independent stations.

  • @ErnieDanzigYEAH I don't know the reason. I mean, so many other bands from down under have done great in the US, like AC/DC and INXS. Makes no sense. BUT I can guarantee you this: you're not the only American Finnfan that hangs on every song he writes. I just love him.

  • @ErnieDanzigYEAH A friend of mine had me look this song up, and I swear, the conversation we had when I asked who Neil Flinn was went almost exactly like that. HA!

  • For the life of me I cannot hit that note he does in the chorus. Mines more like a monkey scream.

  • Nothing wrong with a good monkey scream.

  • Lol that's true

  • LOVE, LOVE this song and CD..

  • last minute of this song is amazing! in the land of women introduced me to this song, it's really great, really relaxing!

  • neil finn the greatest

  • amazing song. it gives me such a calm feeling.

  • my favourite neil finn song!! i love it

  • Beautiful.

  • This has to be my 2nd favourite song in the world

    I love it
