I love this version of Happy Days. The note at the end is just awesome. Didn't sound strained to me....she just let it ring! Love when singers take chances!
Of course, Dinah bought Barbra the dresses she wore on this show- she was not only thinking of her, she was also thinking of HOW Streisand was going to be presented before a national audience. She certainly wasn't going to let her wear an "indecent" dress on network television {"Who's the girl with the beautiful voice and the lousy clothes??"}.
I've never seen Babs look so awful and sing so poorly! She sounds like she's imitating the Merm! Oh, dear, not always a good thing this videotape proof of one's past.
I've been a fan of her's since 1963 and continue to be a fan. I went to see her live for the first time in Las Vegas and was thrilled. Is it the black an white of this program that makes her almost not look like Barbra Streisand? I would love to meet her in person. Thanks for the extra information about this program, PJCoan. I had never seen this.
Also note tha Barbra is wearing her good-luck broach. If you view all her early work, she's always wearing great antique broaches. She loved (and continues to love) antique jewelry. She has a vast collection, with a "store" set up in the lower level of her Malibu house.
Stunning. For her sublime voice to come across as it does on this video just proves the magic of Barbra. The range of emotions she can make us feel as she sings goes beyond the words, and is the meaning of true talent.
Hardly anyone sings "in the zone" like this anymore. I've heard "Cry me a river" several times, but I never really listened to the lyric or got the gist of the song until I saw this video. She totally drives it home.
I love the way she used to push her instrument to the edge for her interpretation. She was riveting and projected such raw emotion. Acting the song. I think giving the public a real view of women's emotions when at the time society still had a delusional view of how ladies should be. The '60's were all about pushing the artistic envelope. Once she appeared every popular singer was trying to sing like her. Of course she was and is the original, one of a kind.
I Love the young Barbara. Her voice is so strong and the way she used to hold notes straight. Best arrangements. My folks used to tell a story about another couple insisted they go back to here this young girl who was appearing in a night club on the west side of Cleveland/Lakewood? It turned out to be Miss Streisand and Mike Douglas arranged a gig while she was there for his program. I believe it was '62 / 3. Fascinating to see here at this age. 2 years later she was on the Garland show.
I met the choreographer of The Dinah Shore Show- Tony Charmoli- who remembers this show, and how Barbra had nothing decent to wear for the show, so Dinah Shore drove Barbra to I. Magnin's and bought Barbra the dresses she wore for this show. Tony even remembered the color of this dress- vivid red chiffon.......
@kyolym Could be- Tony Charmoli was there and he remembers it red. The 50+ years may have blurred his memory. Yes, I've seen this video in vivid color, and remember the dress as either red or a chinese orange. Early color TV shows- especially NBC with their advanced state-of-the-art color recording facility in Brooklyn, NY, then in Burbank, CA- insisted on all colors on the TV shows to be vivid. "Brought to you in living color!"
@PJCoan HI.. thats really cool.. do u remember how much were the dresses at that time ,or how much was this dress shes wearing? im just wondering if the stars at that time wore very expencive clothing .. like they do now .
Don't be too hard on the american idol contestants. Remember that the media, including schools, has dumbed us down in so many ways, to promote mediocrity and to stifle free thinking and creativity that actually and honestly reflects truth. The INTERNET is helping to give us back our freedom of expression, at least. Let's rejoice when people try to do well, when we witness their noble and ignoble attempts. They are all to to commended though few make it to the top, that is, have the real talent.
What I mean is it's not my favorite of her renditions of HDAHA. It's not bad, but I find it a tad abrasive at parts, and the last note is fairly strained.
I think she sang it most expressively and eloquently on her first television special, "My Name is Barbra."
I agree. She bravely reached for the last note, higher than usual--but it didn't serve the song well. At just 21 years old here (pretty sure) she was still experimenting with her interpretation of this song. Live TV too, no retakes!
OMG! That last note!?! I'm sure perfectionist Barbra wishes she could go back and start over. =S

Barbra sure belted out those 2 numbers. The dress and the hairdo recall the
style of first lady Jacqueline Kennedy. By the way, the kennedys were watching
the show, and Barbra was invited to sing at thw White House where she met
President Kennedy at the end of May 1963.

Was this 1963 show originally broadcast in color? I seem to recall the 1963 Dinah Shore Show was shown in color. Perhaps I am wrong.
