  • this is a rocknroll dream team

  • Ten Years After, Mountain, Wishbone Ash & Spirit...great bands that deserve more props.Nice that Alvin & Leslie ( who lost the weight ) are still out there.I saw Randy in Hawaii just before his death - R.I.P. Can't remember the name of the Spirit song but it is note for note borrowed for Stairway to Heaven...

  • Great!!I love those two people!!

  • that guitar looks like a toy in Leslie West hands.

  • Leslie West = Les Paul Junior = killer tone & vibrato.

Alvin Lee = kick-ass-rockin' speed = stole the show at Woodstock = my fav, Goin' Home.

Together they = drooling once again!

  • I grew up listning to hedrix, clapton, beatles, then alvin came along, he just never got in the hit stream, west was heavy rocking, I still consider alvins guitar solo on id love to change the world, with ten years after, one of my favorite solo,s of all time.

  • Leslie West is the Sam Kinison of electric guitar.

  • wow Leslie looked alot better when i saw him in 07

  • TWO OF THE BEST

  • My my, hey, hey....

  • leslie IS the MAN!!!

  • A seething mass guitar orgy!

  • Some "Badass" guitar playing here....... Alvin and Leslie, 2 of the "Best Ever".

And the classic "Rock & Roll" songs of Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. "Great Stuff"

  • ALWAYZ been a HUGE fan of BOTH "KILLER" Guitarists !!!! Quite simply, their about THEE BEST OUT THERE,,,,NO, and I MEAN NO!!!! ARGUEMENTS PLEASE !!LOL!!

  • Like a rock & roll hydra . catch Leslie acting like a 2nd unit director there getting that cam to zero in on Lee's action? Cool the way they went into Dizzy Miss Lizzie then Move over Beethoven .Saw Hunter as he really stood out however brief -but i didn't hear Randy.

  • A MOUNTAIN OF TALENT.

  • Only a minor complaint - as great as he is Leslie should have let more of the other people play

  • Holy cwap!!!! I didn't know these legends ever played played together, thank God for YT that i can see this now, this is so freaking awesome!!!!!!

  • Note how Leslie, in awe, tries to get the camera operator to tape Alvin's fingerwork Astonishing.

  • ohhhhh DEPPER - you never disappoint! GREAT!

  • Randy California and Leslie West playing frisbee at the end. Leslie's heavenly tone. The Marsall Towers. Can it get any better than this?

  • @depper ---- If I only had a time machine!

  • @depper sure, you could find a pre-experience Hendrix video with Randy California playing rhythm for him...

  • @depper

Randy California....a.k.a. Kaptain Kopter. The man made the ultimate sacrifice. He gave his life to save another. May you rest in peace Kaptain Kopter

  • WOW...look at those Marshall stacks!!!!!

  • Alvin and Leslie always had the fattest, funky tone on there guitars. It's like butter, but cuts like a life. Have Mercy, I love the hell out of this ! Freddie King, you taught us all so well ! RIP Brother.

  • ok...look closely...... near the end.....thats Steve Howe fom YES on the accustic guitar...OMG...lol...this is a great video!

  • Nothing left to say but....HELLLLL YEAHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!

  • thanks for posting this. I love watching these humble men play guitar fast and with great passion for there music. They never gor the rcognition they so deserved. But thats what made them so special. Loving this. Thanks again

  • alvin lee is one hell of a mothafuken guitair player....very underrated

  • @funds450 , I've always commented that Alvin Lee is one of the 10 greatest guitair players ever. UTube's site on this subject rarely show video's that include the late 60;s and 70's players like Alvin Lee or Peter Frampton for that matter.

  • If none of you know who Randy California is, he is the guy who actually wrote the opening for "Stairway to Heaven", but he called it "Taurus" and released it two years earlier.

  • I was a fan of Spirit but I did not know that little bit of info. Thanks

  • @SIRinLTHR

Randy was a great player !

The KAPT KOPTER and SPIRIT OF '76 LPS are some of my favorite of his works.

  • this is too cool cant get no better than that!!!

  • Thank you, depper, for mentioning West's TONE. So true.

  • Steve Howe is my favorite of the guitarists onstage, although he's not really known for blues. Probably why he's not soloing here.

  • Comment removed

  • like miles copeland said that night when he introduced him for his stint-Abig man with a big guitar sound!

  • I never knew that this existed. Absolutely fantastic. They were both good. It was a mutual admiration society.

  • You can tell that Leslie had great admiration for Alvin and that's great.

  • Ok folks, its LIVE! Check out my review of "Leslie West: The Sound and the Story DVD" on the Great Fatsbies website!!

Check my youtube profile for links to the Great Fatsbies website and forum! And dont forget to sign up!!

  • great Alvin Lee

  • Isn't that Steve Howe with the acoustic?

  • Yes, it is, pun intended ! :)

  • Jan Leslie ist bei den besten,Alvin wirds vieleicht noch.

  • Alvin is far from being about just speed!.....Just listen to the song Bluest blues, among many others, and then come back on here and tell me he's just about speed and great Rock!

  • Wow Leslie is one of the true greats!! Underrated to the max!!!

  • Great!!!! This is the Rock.

  • these guys are the best at what they do Rooocccckk baby

  • From L.I. New York 'where Leslie is from ,also seen Him w/ The Vagrants in late 60s and He was playin those heavy chords then, loud and great riffs but I think HE would tell you: ALVIN 'S the man .Leslie was the first, real heavy guitar player from that area ,and was hip to the British invading /Great Times..

  • Leslie and Alvin got along very very well on this tour. Leslie explained to Howard Stern during an interview that Alvin and he had a blast.

Alvin is about speed, and great Rock. Leslie is about tone and vibrato, and great Rock.

    Together they were electric.

  • seen him play with Rat Race Quire at the last chance in poughkeepsie in the 80's

  • that's the WAY, depper! 5 stars, and thanks for sharing!

  • Leslieand Mountain did a cover of this on Avalanche? Thanks depper ! Leslie dwarfs his axe!!

  • He sure did Jeep! But I warn you, Mountain's cover of this song on Avalanche is HEAVY!!!! Thick as molasses. NOBODY was heavier both in size OR sound during this time. When West touches this song, he OWNS IT.

  • Man this smokes! Leslie and Alvin go way back, playing on a lot of Pop festival type concerts.

  • oh yeah!!

  • dat fat boy can play

  • ALVIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Yeah Man!!! real rock, nroll will neverdie!!! thanks Depper for posting this

  • many great guitar players on that stage- but i agree leslie and alvin are awesome

  • deeper you post the best videos man, Alin lee and leslie west.. wow .. Nirvana!!!!

  • go jonnhy go!!!!

  • two of the great guitar players, just kickin ass.

  • Thank you ! Great.

  • Haha its just like one big party on the stage! look at how much fun their having

  • no mamen que hace miles copeland ahi claro es un buen manager a huevo

  • Great sound & great guitar players!

  • i love how they all have such inventive guitars 80's style/.

  • is this turner from wishbone ash?

  • yep!

  • What can I say!! These guys are the BEST!!!

  • Leslie West is definitely still touring, and last I looked so is Alvin Lee. These men will die before they retire from Rock n Roll. Both 40+ year veterans.

Have a scorching video of Leslie and Joe Satriani from a few months ago:

"Satriani & West LAST SHOW - Stormy Monday"

  • leslie west an alvin lee fucking fantastic!!!!!

  • leslie west not playing a gibson junior !never see that before man!

  • Alvin Lee kicks ass here....as usual.

  • Great Alvin Lee songs; "Help e", "I can't kep from crying somtimes"

  • Saw Lee in Lund (SWE) in 73 in the era when he used swedish (white!) clogs. He´s still touring?

  • WooooW

  • depper. I couldn't agree more. those guys

should be in the hall. right along with

robin trower and his singer, the late

    great james dewar.

  • A great combination of Alvin Lee's explosive pyrotechnics and Leslie West's superb tone and feel. Both true guitar legends!

  • Ain't much doubt who's in charge of this show....MR. LESLIE WEST....Lordy, they do ROCK.... :-D

  • Dunno bout you guys, but I hear Leslie.....he's is a step up tone wise over the bunch!

  • I saw Leslie West in Connecticut with a group called The Vagrants in '67 or '68. I then saw him in Chicago at Kinetic Playground with what was called Chicago Transit Authority in '69. He remains a largely ignored talent.

  • To my knowledge none of these guys are in the R & R Hall of Fame. Isn't that correct?

  • Fux, you are sadly correct. The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame has for the most part ignored the hard rock pioneers of the late 60s and early 70s. Mountain in my opinion, is their biggest oversight. If Madonna and Prince got IN, Leslie West, Feliex Pappalardi, and Corky Laing should have been opening the door for them.

  • Well yea :) If you're in The Hall of Fame, you're too well known and cool people don't buy your stuff or come to your concerts

  • Yeah, I knew that Hall of Fame thing was going to turn into a turd, and it did. Big surprise ;)

  • theyve dont alot in the past few years to discredit their claim to be the hall of fame (50 years gone and Buddy Holly still hasnt been honored. But Madonna -and the Ojays???????- will go down in RnR history)

  • Happy Birthday Alvin Lee

    God Bless Merry Christmas

  • Leslie West does all right for a fat boy.

  • This is a rather monumental performance. Has anyone ever counted how many times Alvin Lee yells "I'm Goin' Home" during the performance of that song in the Woodstock movie?

  • I once counted 56 but I'm sure I missed a few :)

  • Would have been nice if Dick Wagner was able to be there too. Thanks for the vid, I never knew that Hunter jammed with Alvin Lee.

  • awesome

  • Exactly. Spot on.

  • I freakin' love L West but the bar dives are a bit much in this vid. He's too good a player for hair metal gimmicks.

  • Cant make everyone happy... just remember, without the pioneering work of Leslie West and Tony Iommi, there would be no heavy metal. So I think West reserves the right to improv anyway he sees fit.

  • Metal gimmicks ! Woodstock-and all the 70's, sorry you weren't old enough to drive to concerts in the 70's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • iv got ted's silver fish necklace ;0

  • Man borde förbjuda denna musik

  • Really enjoyed this ... brought back loads of memories from a world of kick-butt music.

  • Alwin Lee is a great-great guitarist as well.I would like to see him any time live again.Without him Ten Years After is something like the Taste without Rory Galagher...

  • agreed. But Alvin and Leslie on the same stage playing together is like Rock n Roll Heaven, before it happens.

  • or deep purple without blackmore and lord,

    grand funk without farner,.....

    many examples...

  • now THAT'S about a true statement!

  • That guitar looks like a toy in Leslie's hands. great vid. thanks for posting.

  • Ouch. Steve Howe brought a knife to a gunfight in this video.

    *Ray*

  • hahaha yep!!!!

  • .. rotflmao.... thats just a GREAT COMMENT!!

  • Yeah, talk about a "Living Legends Rock n Roll Band" this is it...

  • stewart copeland of the police on drums

  • JBGood!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Heh...You had the Jungle was rockin on this one! Awesome

  • Excerpt from "Night Of The Guitar", featuring Peter Haycock, Steve Hunter, Andy Powell, Randy California, Leslie West, Steve Howe, Alvin Lee, Robbie Krieger, Stewart Copeland

  • shit! my volume wont go up high enough!

  • Baby, I KNOOOOOW what your talkin about. The walls were shakin, the earth was Quakin.

  • No kiddin' Leslie & Alvin were smokin'... I have to find a way to repost this, with better video and way more sound so we can blast this one!

  • And I agree, Alvin Lee and Leslie West are still as good as anybody.

Me and my buddies spent hours listening to those two. Brings back fond memories.

  • I don't know where and when this concert was filmed but there was more guitar talent on that stage than you realize.

I might be wrong but Steve Miller, Steve Howe and possibly Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen are also there.

There might be a couple more but it's hard to make out on this video.

  • YES! Leslie's tone is the fattest of everyone up there (guitars) but nothins fatter than that steel pedal...

  • Whether West plays it straight through the amp or with the use of a pedal (which 99% of guitarists use onstage) the big man has proven his tone comes mainly from his hands. Either way, his tone is signature, and most will state his guitar tone is the best in rock history.

  • Two Titans of Tone !!

  • Depper, thanks a lot for sharing this with us. Simply brilliant!

  • Talk about respect here...anyone notice how Alvin laid off his usual speed demon licks? No doubt he didn't want to try and seem like he was stealing the show here!

  • Well Alvin properly laid off his lightening licks. And Leslie laid off his thunder as well. See thats the difference between these great guitar pioneers and today's neophytes. One listen to Zakk Wylde trying to perform Mississippi Queen on youtube and you see how little respect today's "guitar technicians" have for the rock and roll sound. Everything is played fast, with no regard for guitar tone whatsoever. And we wonder why rock has dropped off the charts like a hot pot?

  • You got that right. The most embarassing moment I saw for a performer was when Peter Frampton was backing Johnny Winter and he had the absolute gaul to play Jumpin Jack Flash before Johnny. What a mistake. Johnny Winter blew him away. Never understood why Frampton would make such a bonehead move.

  • Absolutely spot on Devils. Just amazing how important each guitar legend that performed that night was to rock music. Each one created a style that was unique in the genre. Each guitarist got along so great on this tour, and it was a pleasure to watch Leslie get on that camera man AND check Leslie at 2:19-2:26, snapping his fingers to Alvin's solo. This is what is so sorely missing from today's crop of guitarists. Watching guitar gods respect each other in this way IS rock n roll history.

  • depper.....

VERY well said!...this is all part & parcel of what's wrong with today's generation. (lol, my parent's generation said the same 'bout my generation!)

But, it's true nonetheless. Alvin & Leslie came from a time when respect was taught & expected. Today, it's all about "me"!

  • Right on, depper!!! This is what music is supposed to be all about! This is great to see these two rock giants on stage together laying down some bluesy jams!

  • Leslie West yelling at the camera man at 2:06 to get his act together and film Alvin Lee's hands has got to be one of the coolest moments in rock music history.

  • Of course I hope everyone knows this is Ted Turner from Wishbone Ash, NOT Ted from CNN\Time Warner\Jane Fonda used-to-own-the-Atalant Braves fame...

  • Hahahaha yes I think thats perfectly clear from the fact that THIS Ted Turner isnt 90 forkin years old!

  • Teds a great guitarist man.Love The ash.

  • look at the mountain of Marshalls behind these guys damn

  • Leslie West and Alvin Lee on the same stage at the same time...does it get any better than this?

  • Certainly does NOT get any better than this. Of ALL the classic rock guitarists 60's & 70s Leslie West would represent the Thunder and Alvin Lee would represent the Lightening. Thunder and Lightening. Together at last! :)

  • Leslie West and Alvin Lee on the same stage at the same time...does it get any better than this?

  • Leslie West has maybe THE most recognized guitar tone in rock and roll history. Its completely unmatched.

  • If I could only find a Genie in a bottle, to see this concert live would be one of my wishes!

  • Oh this was a GRAND show! One of the all time greatest guitar shows because of who was involved. Guitar techniques and equipment/sound quality were at the very highest levels, even exceeding in many cases what these artists used in their primes. Most memorable was how friendly the guitarists were, ZERO ego, all laughs and hugs.. THIS IS WHAT ROCK SHOULD BE ABOUT.

  • Great find . I just finished working out to Mountain and TYA on vinyl down in the basement and I stumble across this . West , Zappa . Lifeson , Marino , Lee , Gilmour , Page ,Iommi Beck , Walsh , Townsend ,Winter , Allman , Hendrix etc etc and today guitarists in shit bands like NIckleback can't go from e to e . Long live the greats .

  • Leslie had some killer tone!...this is great....2 of my favs. together kicking rock'n'roll ass!

  • Oh hell yeah.. the guitarists of today holding the rock n roll mantle are a FAR CRY from these legends. They were the best.. all of them.

  • Craziest guitar I ever saw Leslie play was at Steve Loungos Club in Spring Valley, NY in 1988. Leslie played a white Stienberger L Series guitar.... it looks like a toy guitar... think of a 300 lb Leslie West holding on his stomach a small white index card with a guitar neck (with no head) sticking out!! He looked like he was playing a pack of cigarettes with a cig hanging out (for a guitar neck)! Best damn jamming I have EVER heard at a concert... 3 HOUR SHOW.. I was deaf for 2 weeks after!

  • One thing I never understood (not this clip) but others is how Leslie West played so well on that tiny little Melody Maker? The guys such a giant.

  • Be sure to check out my two newest uploads ... Mountain playing at the World Trade Center, in NYC, just 30 days before the towers were destroyed... historic footage...

  • do you realize who else is on that stage ? steve howe ,stevie hunter ,robbie krieger etc. so before you say the rest are just background players think twice.

  • Yep. Everyone knows my favorite is Leslie West, but Leslie on that one night was a God among Gods. Nobody was a background act. These were men that had mastered their trade, and were pioneers in the field. They are ALL better in my opinion than the current crop of guitar speed demons like Vai, Satriani, Zakk Wylde... Speed dont make a hit record. Rock and Roll thrived on SOUL, and the Rock Gods weep at the lack of rock hits in the 90's and 00's. There aint no Rock and Roll without soul brotha!

  • "There aint no Rock and Roll without soul brotha! "

    Amen to that!!!!

But there are a few that get it too, Rich Robinson and others from the Black Crowes, D.Trucks, Warren Haynes maybe even Kenny Wayne

  • No doubt there. In fact, D.Trucks & Haynes are big Leslie West fans.

  • Stewart Copeland on the skins too .

  • Amen to that Depper. Leslie Johnny Winter Frank Zappa and Alex Lifeson.and Dwayne Allman.

  • Ya daym right Flunder... and the day Leslie West, Johnny Winter, Frank Zappa, & Dwayne Allman step foot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is the day I consider it a blip on the map. Because Elvis was to the 50's, what the Beatles were to the 60's, what West and gang were to the 70's. And if you dont believe that jack... you on some disco crack!

  • Id have to go with Leslie West on this because his tone and licks are great.

  • Agreed. Leslie's tone, vibrato, and phrasing are so unique. It's as if they are trademarked. Leslie's sound is completely recognizable among the sea of guitarists on stage. Close your eyes, you can hear Leslie's unmistakable trademark tone. I know this for sure though... Leslie West belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

  • Is this available in DVD format? I have night of the guitars 1 in DVD but not for 2... Even no in video tape.

  • alvin lee is cool but the best allrounder and by far the most awesome has got to be ry cooder

  • Alvin lee's my favorite, His licks are so unique, creative & inspiring

  • This video has got me a little confused because - in common with the vast majority of Youtube viewers- I would really like to know "who is the most awesome guitarist in the whole world". You would think in this day and age, they could invent some device for measuring awesomeness, which would settle this issue once and for all. Awesomeness being such an important issue and all.

  • I own such a device, its called my Leslie West collection ;)

  • Yes I saw this gentleman in the 70's in Edinburgh. They were using the Who's PA system as I remember. He's a very good player, loads of presence. I just did a google for the guy and I was delighted to find he is still playing.

  • just remembered when I saw him he was using a les paul junior. Single pickup.

  • Leslie West is so good, so the rest are just backgroundplayers.

  • leslie west is my favorite. his tone is so weighty. stil everything is so clear and smooth. i have no idea how he does it. if anyone knows please tell me

  • It doesnt matter how many guitar legends you put up on that stage, Hendrix, Page, Beck, Clapton... put em ALL up there, sit me down and blindfold me.. I will pick out Leslie West. THAT is deserving alone of the term "Guitar God" in my book. There have been countless guitarists spending late nights awake trying to get that tone. Personally, I've never seen any artist succeed.

  • The Night of the Guitars tour was one of the best of its kind. Unfortunately IRS did a horrible job of promoting it in the US and abroad, and has been discontinued for about a decade. Maybe thats what makes this footage even more valuable.

  • How marvelous to see Alvin Lee!and with Lesley to boot. Great video, and I really appreciated watching it.. The greats never 'wane' they just 'wax' away... Johnny Winter is my favorite, bar none.. but this is great.. thanks depper... LighthouseLil'

  • Absolutely! Yea we all have our favorites, at least you got good taste! :)
