I practice leaving my dogs and moving a few feet away, turning to the R of L or just going ahead and then commanding them to "find heel". I've used this more than once in the obedience ring when my dog hasn't exactly been working with me. LOL It's save a couple Qs.
I highly recommend Dawn Jecs book. When I read it it was out of print but I got it from the library - it's now for sale again. Small but mighty and makes heeling fun for the dogs. Now I can simply command heel in the ring.
Choose to Heel by Dawn Jecs is one method of teaching a dog to heel and that's what I used. You can Google the book - it's wonderful. I started Wally heeling at 9 weeks, every time he came to my L side I'd click and treat with "good find heel" - no command, but a praise that he'd found heel. I gradually narrowed the requirements until from just being on my L he had to be in good heel position. Then variable rewards. In obed ring the command "find heel" is useful -see next comment -continued
Great video! I have a question: why use "find heel" to mark the behavior and do you eventually shift to a simple "heel" command? Thanks for the follow up info.
You're right, it is a constant and "entenal" training thing. When we did this video Schatze was very very young, she is now pushing 3 and has two RN legs. She will get the 3rd as soon as "life" lets them trial again.
Never give up on your dogs. My Chihuahua seems to be majoring in utility obedience - but I know she can do it, and she loves trying, so we keep trying.

Thanks for the video. It's a good reminder that with dog training, miracles don't happen overnight, and patience and a fair pace is key.

You've never had a dog huh?

@coreylena There is a big difference between bribing a dog and rewarding a dog. Do a little google searching and you'll see the difference.

i like the method for watching...makes sense to me..though its tedious its easy...thanks

Thank you. It's really helpful to know exactly when to provide the treats. I never thought to reinforce watch as a separate behaviour.
