Theres special dust? so you have to buy it theres no way for a chinchilla to survive out in the wild? dang must be rough finding a owner. I wonder what they use out there... oh thats right.. SAND
My family wants a chinchilla and im like only 13. So if someone can help me that'd be great. We are woried because of two things. Someone said it lives up to twenty years old, and that it takes dust baths. When you give it dust baths is dust gonna be all over my room.
I doubt 20 years, but they can live a while. They don't like... they NEED dust baths. Don't ever give them a bath in water, or grab them by the tail! And yes, it can get dust around. Don't put them near a computer, it'll get dust all over in there. They're VERY good for people with allergies. But the ones I had didn't really like to be held... they're not cuddlers from my experience. Chinchillas tend to run about $100 a piece. But they're quiet and cute and VERY soft.
you can get standard greys for like £30 or ebonys for like 240 £. depends what chinchiila you would like. but the average i would say is around 70 pounds
From what i know, chinchillas are, on average, $70- $175. but before you buy one, have a background chech on it. make sure that you get along with it and learn about where the chinchilla came from :D

If we don't buy wild animals as pets the demand for them will decrease. Therefore their value will decrease and the hunters won't catch them and the animals will remain in their natural habitat and be much happier than in a cage in somebody's living room.
I believe you are laboring under a misconception. All chinchillas bought/sold in the US are domesticated and bred in captivity. In fact, our pets are rescues from the fur industry. Wild chinchillas are highly endangered; there are very few of them left in the mountains of South America. No one hunts wild chinchillas to sell to consumers, there is no demand. Please research before you comment.
The Andes mountains are the original habitat of their ancestors. It's very cold and arid there, so their fur is incredibly soft and dense...in order to keep it clean, they roll in volcanic ash in the wild. :)
It's not really "dust." They prefer volcanic ash... which is actually really cheap at any pet store. Important thing though: NEVER give them a bath in water. It'll make their hair fall out. Ash-baths only.
Aw! How cute! I'm gonna get one soon! I'm not sure what color though.I want a Silver Strain or a Silver. I'kll name her Chihirou. If it's a boy, Chihiro.
I posted up some of my chin videos too! I have a silver mosaic (which I think Mei Lu must be) and a standard grey. You should check out my two idiots!

kayce9211 2 years ago
2-3 times a week usually.
But, if there skin gets dry and flaky then you should lessen the times you give them a dust bath.
WILDKAT4LYF 2 years ago
How many times in a week do you have to bathe them?

what do u use for the bat can u use sand
whyuhappy 3 years ago
There's special dust. You can't use sand because it'll be too abrasive. The dust is made to act a lot like volcanic ash.

Sand will be too rough on them. They survive in the wild by bathing in volcanic ash. The dust is designed to imitate the volcanic ash.

They can easily live OVER twenty years. And yes, you can grab them by the base of their tail, nearest their bodies.

I recall a pet store selling them for ~$130. My friend says you can buy them at carnivals for ~$100 (don't take my word for it though).

No hunters go out and catch them. They are all decents of 11 that were hunted down in the 1900's. YOu should go read some history before asuming.

I've never had a chinchilla before, and I didn't know they did that. Why do they roll in dust?

KMayLi 5 years ago 10
@KMayLi So, in order to get that ash, you just go to the nearest VOLCANO and throw some stuff in the lava to make it dust..... I think..
GalaxySoldier 3 months ago
It's how they bathe. They roll in the dust, and that keeps their fur healthy and soft.
