Its a true melody by Runalaila. We used to listen to this on an LP in the year of its release. There are nice dialogues before this song and were in the LP. To appreciate it more & understand its meaning, 'should see the movie. Runa sang some more songs during that period- ' Ek se bar kar ek'- but this remains her one of the best. The director is Bhimsen (Other films-Doooriyan; and Tum Laut aao) of the cartoon 'Ek chirya anek chirya' fame. If someone can upload any song from Tum Laut aao pls.

What have I find weird about this song is that Runa's voice is sooo sweet, yet the lyrics are soooo rude " You may not believe it not, but I don't love you". Great song!

@gatesrocks The wording is a bit ironic... She says "I am sure I do not love you", but then she follows up with "... but still, whenever you are far from me, my heard is filled with sadness". I guess, its meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek.

@srinathava77 Actually what the song means is the actor is denying herself that she is in love with this guy. But she is also giving reasons/excuses when she misses. Yet she is confident that she is not in love with him. Denial mode. And that is the beauty of this song.

Comparing her to Mehdi Hassan is not fair as He is a legend and respected as Ustad by all great singers. His most valuable student is Jagjit singh.. who himself is a legend.

Runa Laila started her career as a playback singer in Pakistan and migrated to Bangladesh after partition and sang few songs to India and Bangladesh.. She always regreted her move as she enjoyed as the prime lead singer status in Pakistan and never got any break in India or Bangladesh. She visited Pakistan many a times as she still holds Pakistani nationalality. She is one of the best voices one can listen.

@oshkosh79 Yes, 20 years as I have been out of India for about 30+ years and this movie was released in the mid-70s and I saw it in a theatre in Mumbai. Did not think of buying the movie then. Came to USA in 1982 and have been here since. So, that is how my 20 years is not a figure of speech. LOL!
