I had no money and had just left law school in Sept of 1981. I desperately wanted to take my new girlfriend and love of my life Diane out for a memorable day. We had a little money, a few beers, and not much else when we ventured into the city that day. Flash forward to 2011 and here we are still in love with the best 2 girls ever that anyone could ever hope to have. Lindsey and Laura may never know how cool her mom and dad are and always were. We still listen to it today. We are still in love.
At the time this concert was put on, Central Park had the reputation for being the deadliest and dirtiest place in America. What they did was cleanse the Park with the one thing that would bring that many New Yorkers out of their apartments. They are angels. New York looks way better now than it did in 1976 when I visited, and the tour bus took us in a loop around the park but we could not actually get out of the bus.
The soul in music comes from God who is the creator of ALL that is beautiful. We turn our backs to Him and the soul is taken away...THAT'S what happend.
Whatever they do... it sounds good. It will always be like that... beautiful music like that will never be outworn... They are just brilliant. Pure symbiosis. =)
My recollections of watching this concert on televsion as a child, was about 11 years old, and it was the night before we went on our holidays, and I had fallen off my bike that day and ripped my legs to bits. The beauty of the music must have numbed my pain. Am forever greatful to my dad for his record collection which introduced me to such artists as Art and Paul.
i saw their latest concert in rome, italy, after re-union, on 2001, and they were sublime... we were over than 500 thousand, all over europe. it was free....so a lot of people from germany, france, switzerland.... came down in italy to see them. it was great to listen so many people sing in their "own" english bridge of troubled water...and the boxer, but the greatest thing was that there was alot of young people to listen and sing their song. that's make the difference!
@buccylla it is exhilarating to read comments like this. I have been listening to their music since the early days so I know how good it is. I can play several of them on my six string so its a real joy to see them perform live. Thanx for posting
Being from the NYC area, I had the opportunity to see this re-union concert back in '81.If I recall, there was approx. half million in attendance that evening. Most certainly one of the best shows I had ever seen.I don't think you'll ever see classic artists like These again.
@kerrgal Ah man you're lucky!! I wish I had been too! Their music totally stands the test-of-Time.Love it as much today as I did decades ago! Also love Paul Simon's own band.
EXCLUSIVE - If anyone wants to see an amazing live singer that couldn't even get in to Britains Got Talent search- Dave Lennard Britains Got Talent Reject and see what you think, thanks
Don't you think Steve looks just like animal from the muppertshow..I just love this concert, have it myself on DVD, it always picks me up when i'm down.
today ANYBODY can be a singer, come on look at that ditzy blonde from "real houswives of Atlanta" she is so tone deaf and has NO VOICE what so ever. Paris Hilton made an album FOR CHRISTS SAKE Paris Hilton ROTFL !!!
I was 13 years old and had no money to buy the double record, so I bought it with a friend of nine. It should stay one week at my hose, one at his... I know all the songs by heart. Just love tehm. I'm 42 now... I like Muse but never forgot this... they are wonderful. Great song writers and great preformers. Love from Portugal!
A great open air concert in Central Park, at the beginning of the great 80's.
When I see that concert film, (with this Top Song in it), I always wished I could have been there too.. You can really taste the wonderful atmosphere! (But however me, I was much too young, and much too far away (Europe) .. -;) God bless the DVD's ! -;)
Wow, does this bring back memeories. I was at this show. 29 years ago today, September 19, 1981. It was a great show. I was 21 then, now I am 50. I love Simon and Garfunkel. Brings me back to the core of my childhood.
When I was a little kid, I went with my parents to this concert! I remember it very well! It was the coolest atmosphere, and everyone was very very nice, although it was extremely crowded. The thing I will never forget , is that I noticed everone passing around 'cigerettes'. (My mother was a smoker), and I asked her why people were doing that, and she said (smilingly), they all ran out, so everyone had to share! But It didn"t smell like cigerettes, I thought! I still love S&G to this day! :)
My Uncle Trev (God rest his soul, taped this for me when I was18 years old. Now, 27 years later it still sends shivers down my spine when I listen to the whole concert. Amazing music and two geniuses.
Wished I could have been there too, that night in Central Park, on a great open air performance, at the beginning of the great 80's ! .. But however much too young and much too far away (Europe).
@ZitkalaNoni I was trying to get two of my other friends to go and they did not want to go to the concert. When they heard 500,000 people were there they knew they missed out on a part of history. I went with one lucky friend. I do think the 60's and 70's were the best time for rock and free spriited music. Todays youth have gone down a different path.
indeed, as I bought the Central Park concert DVD &as a big music lover, I immediately saw that must have been something 'historic'. Lucky you! Nice to hear some of the real 'witnesses' of that amazing concert ! -;) Yes all my idols made great music i.t 60's/70's/80's. Beatles/Roxy Music/ FleetwoodMac/ Level42/ The Police/ etc.etc... -born too late -;) -;)
@ZitkalaNoni although you say you were born too late, you were born with great taste ! good music is good music whatever the decade, love your favourites list !!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MrJim12341121 We have not. Look at what's happening in the arab world, or spain, greece & even here in Belgium. Striking moment of that spirit was the Flaming Lips' concert at the Pukkelpop festival last year, when 10,000 people had their moment against the war in Iraq.
But about the part of history, you're right. If only I was born then... I would have been there.
@MrJorremorre What's happening in the arab world and what's happening in Europe right now is absolutely NOT the same as the movements of the 60s and 70s. These new movements are garbage.
@MrJim12341121 : Well said, regarding your comment about music and the chosen path taken by today's generation, lacking in substance..meaning, it's all together noise pollution.
@MrJim12341121 Consider us fortunate for our ability to appreciate art though I hear many new artists whose work is current and significant and deep. Do you know the history of S&G, their beatnik influence? their position in academic history? I have an understanding, being a child of their spiritual genre; "analysis" arrived. Looking at the who, why and what...
"...it was a time of innocence a time of confidences..."
I watched this one live on TV and would have paid a gran to have been there. What a great, great concert by two of the best singer/songwriters of our time. Some of us are getting older now, losing our parents, but as long as the spirit of the music is there, we will always be young. Peace to all.
Fantastic! Nobody beats these guys. Sure missed them when they couldn't make the Winnipeg stop this year. Hope that they're both ok now. Said I wouldn't buy concert tickets for them ever again but I lied. If they ever come back here I'll be first in line. Biggest Fan Anne from Winnipeg :)
Simon and Garfunkel really do make you proud to be an American citizen, to me they are an awesome emblem of The United states of America, God Bless them, Regards Neville Bardoli.
p.s. Respect to the man Mr Steve Gadd on drums, why i'm a hugh fan
Bloody hell, they were brilliant!! Great song writers, brilliant harmonies and simply fantastic performers!! I remember watching this Central Park show as a 9 year old and I was hooked!!
"This was the best I had ever heard. I borrowed a Double-Album from my local Library. 90 minutes of pure entertainment in 1997, just when I needed it ."
there is LOTS of great music out there.. if you look elsewhere besides the radio.. there is PLENTY of great artists out there.. just DONT WATCH TV OR LISTEN TO THE RADIO, CAUSE YOU WILL NEVER HEAR THEM :)

Great musick from the decade that hosted the biggest sellouts in history.
The youth of the 70s are now a part of the establishment, tell me where is the love you rallyed in the streets for?
The world is as bad as it ever been!
It is time to stepp up and do as you once preached.
