Being 71, I have loved the Ventures forever. I play "pipeline" on the steel guitar (open A low bass 6 string) with band in a box backup at 3/4 speed, lots of sliding
@Lloydhl that is certainly MEL TAYLOR, not his son Leon. Leon would later join the band. See "surf rider" when Don Wilson introduces the song. That video has Mel's son, Leon, in it.
this shit kicks ass,,,that guitar is amazing,,,you are wrong if you think otherwise...this is not about opinion.....this is like a .45acp,,,,this has power man
"You just know that guy with the flying v has done time in county": Well, all axe murderers need their axe, no? Actually, that is Chris Spedding, famous rock n roll, jazz and session guy (at least in the UK). Seeing Peter Frampton here may seem odd, but just like thousands of guitarists around the world, he and Chris grew up digging and were inspired by the Ventures and are both no doubt ecstatic to actually be there performing with their heroes.
@philipatoz Yep! It's amazing how many great guitar players list The Ventures as big influences on their playing. Many of them learned to play guitar with the Play Guitar With The Ventures albums.
garsh! for some strange reason i have this desire to go surfing or watch repoman. not sur which. ach, i'll just go rob a liquor store, or, get sushi and not pay.
The bass player and the guitarist to the right of him, the one that looks like a misplaced biker in his white pants, those are the cool ones xD The far right guitarist in a pink shirt is just so... weird (especially at the 1:01 zoom in), and the guy in brown with the V guitar kinda looks like a cousin to Fonzie... but damn the music is epic xD

@MHFROX Hah i GAS'ed for a Strat or Tele cuz i'd sit in English or History classes and draw pics of Tele's and Strats. the music teacher bought me a fender jazzmaster since i like surf! now when i have music ill be able to play my Jazzmaster and do some tremolo man! and he also bought me a strat for rock.
@1FenderGuy lol Schweeet! I thought MY Jr. High music teacher (Orchestra) was cool because I got to keep a stand-up bass at home for practice...(after she heard about how difficult it was to get it on & off of the bus when I'd take it home on weekends. lol) Actually, she's still cool...we stay in touch on fb and she's been out to a couple gigs. She's crowding 70 now, but still young at heart!
@1FenderGuy Ohhhh...You know what? Those replies were intended for binksgrampa who I originally started this chat with...my oversight & confusion.....but, glad you're playing! It'll last a lifetime if you let it. Sorry bout the mix up & keep on pickin'! (Boy do I feel dumb. lol)
@MHFROX yeah my guitar teacher let me have his 1989 fender strat with a floyd rose for a week and i used the floyd alot never had to retune! gotoh Floyds are the best
@PeteAndJakee My first guitar teacher (for six weeks) had a Jaguar. I still love the look, hence the Jazzmaster, which I'm likely going to loan, on an undetermined time limit, to one o my kids. lol Kids? 28 & 25.
@MHFROX yeah i am on facebook now. Nathan Brown is my name if u see a pic of a red HSS Squier strat thats me and i fitted my Jazzmaster tremolo arm on my SX strat copy too
@MHFROX Lol u should see the SX strat copy since its a '65 vintage. as the serial says.... i fitted a big as hell jazzmaster tremolo arm i use it the kids are like "wow that tremolo arm is BIG"
@1FenderGuy Aw man, you (or I) have started something now...same teacher, took a rep from each section to the PBS TV studio for a music documentary kind of thing. (67 - 68) I was the bassist and for my segment...God's honest truth, I played Pipeline. Started with the B -E, B -G drone 'doo doo doo doo' then the melody. lol True story.
Found a huge movie theater speaker about 24 inches across, glued the rips in the cone and mounted it to my beds maitress rails facing up......hooked it up to my handmade stereo and turned on the Ventures Pipeline and invented the shaking musical bed. Holly Mosrite what a sound.
stumbled upon this & can see myself dancing all by myself in my Grandmother's living room to Pipeline, Apache, & Telstar -- wow, great memories -- thanks
what is the drummer doing at the microphone?? I can't figure out what sound he's putting out of his mouth...anyone know?? It's making me nuts...thanks.
A Strat, bit of heavy spring reverb, Blackface Twin cranked to "11" - man, it doesn't get much better than this for some "feel-good" music from my youth. You can almost see the wave arc, feel the mist and spray, hitting the pipeline. Can you say Dick Dale?!!! Love 'em, miss 'em!
@hoosierdaddy99 cheers, I only remember seeing Chris Spedding playing a one note solo behind Bryan Ferry 's Stick Together, but he had some great songs on vinly ( Get Out My Pagoda )
Thank you so much for putting this up. This takes me back to Saturdays with my Dad in front of our console stereo. He turned me on to some really great music. Taught me to be open minded and appreciate music. Some of the very very best memories I have as a child. Thank you again!!!
