The lyrics have changed from this version Al Jolson sings. Originally it was called "Tikvaseynu" (Our Hope) instead of HaTikva (The Hope). Also, Jolson sings "where David once lived" rather than "The land of Zion and Jerusalem". The original words "to live in the land of our ancestors" changed "to be a free nation in our own land." Al Jolson's pronunciation is beautiful Ashkenazi Hebrew, where the accents in the modern National Anthem go with Sefardi pronunciation and accents. Thanks!
the last two lines in this version are: lashoov ba'eretz avotinu, b'eir david, david ???.
it means: to be in the land of our forefathers, in the city of david, david ??? (sorry i can't hear the last line but it's probably david the great or good or something along those lines.
the last to lines are more about it being the land of our forefathers. plus i noticed he uses the pronunciation haSitvah witch is the yiddish pronunciation with the taf being a s sound if it does'nt have the dot. love al johnson , love israel and love that al was proud to be a heebster
Great compilation. This version of Hatikvah predates the founding of the State in 1948, when 2 lines were changed. Jolson was planning a trip to Israel, but he died too soon. He recorded a song, Israel, when the State was founded, and all the proceeds went to Israel. Jolson was a big giver.
Aww, that's so sweet of him. Thanks for telling me about this very interesting part of his life. Israel is a wonderful country, the Jews are wonderful people.
You post the most interesting videos, Comrade Brother. I noticed the last 2 lines are different from the current official anthem. Nice use of visuals and excellently informative sidebar. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome, Comrade Brother :). I recently became more interested in Al Jolson's music and happened to find this gem floating around online and noticed it wasn't on Youtube so I decided to make a video to please those who like his music and my Israeli/Jewish comrades :).
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I noticed some of his lyrics differ from the current anthem too. That is because he is singing the original lyrics made by Naphtali Herz Imber in 1878.

@fozziefan Thanks for the interesting information. I noticed myself that he didn't say "Hatikvah". You've given me something cool to think about :)
