Linux is awesome to (ubuntu 6.06 user here with windows 7 dual booted on my really shitty laptop) But, I don't like the "Apple tax" which is the price of the hardware. If I built a machine and used Hackintosh, I'd be fine with it, that's because i'm paying a regular OS price and then not having to pay a lot of money when I can build one with the same power for a lot cheaper.
Bad advice. First of all, I purchased the Windows 7 Upgrade Family Pack. This cost me $99 and I was able to upgrade a Vista PC to 7, a Vista laptop to 7, and an XP PC to 7. At $33 per upgrade, that seems like a no-brainer. To say you are better off only buying Windows 7 in a new PC is a moronic statement. XP (though I love it) is just outdated, and Vista sucks big time. Somebody kick this guy in the face.
He sounds like one of those typical computer engineers that have next to zero EQ, and a girlfriend that is usually from their own line of work that is usually as attractive as their mom. More importantly though, he's likely a mac fan.
to bad i made a big jump on my 2 year old laptop. i had vista basic an wanted to upgrade an i upgraded to windows 7 home premium. and the best part i upgraded for free. and my laptop has everything all the way to aero support. i even ran windows 7 on my old 5 year old desktop with only 512 ram an 3 ghz processor an it ran but just couldnt use aero because the graphic card couldnt support a proper driver for it.

He doesn't mention, if you're a PC gamer (which at most may need a gpu upgrade as well) you want windows 7 for direct x 11 graphics. I wouldn't mind a retail either so I can keep moving it from computer to computer (or mobo/cpu) as I wish, because I don't buy computers from other people with useless unmodifiable configurations because of the OEM software, it's a waste of money than just buying the retail.

Maybe some volume adjustments and maybe some printer installs, but getting it to work how we want is easier, which is what Microsoft fails at.

@0987654321284 You can download windows 7 via internet, burn it to a cd, install it from the cd cause when you putt the cd in, the computer thinks it is a upgrading cd.
After that you have to download an activator. Then you activate the trial version to the real version.
@asey20 if your copy of vista is up-to-date it's not bad at all. most of the hate is just because other people hate, which all stemmed from initial problems with hardware and upgrade support. it's all fixed now, but the hate remains. that said, i use windows 7. not vista. it's better. on my server boxes, debian gnu/linux all the way.
hey just an fyi when you mouse over the program in the task-bar in vista you will still see the window but it will not give a live feed of what is happening although you do need to have areo enabled to use this feature

i upgraded to windows 7 no problems, the installation finished in like 20 min. it check for compatibility and everything worked, even one of my games that was meant for XP works better on Win7 then it ever did on XP, all in all i <3 Win7 and i definitely recommend it to anyone, whether they have XP or Vista its a definite upgrade either way :D
i love windows 7 and when i was having some problems with it the guy that i took it to said if you upload software that's like 2 or 3 years old onto the system it will mess up because you've got a computer speaking fluent french vs a software that only speaks a decent amount. so update your software, like for your printer and stuff if you've had your for decades like me and you'll be fine. sure enough I was.

I disagree when you say that Vista users do not have a lot to gain. They indeed have the most to gain. I have noticed that Win7 has significantly fewer background processes. So, people with 1,2, 3, or 4 GB of RAM will notice a big difference when running 7, depending on what they use their computer for.
I have noticed also that games based off of the HL2 engine run faster on 7. This is probably due, on my computer at least, to the fewer background processes and more recent graphics drivers.
Xp will not be supported sometime this year. If you are strapped for cash and dont want to deal with the security flaws after they pull the plug then you should consider linux ubuntu. Its free and easy to use and set up with support provided and it is very secure unlike windows.
I have been using Vista for some time now and dont see what the big problem is. Its a great OS, much better than XP or OS X and I really havent had that many issues with it. I just did the free upgrade to 7 and find 7 to be quite unnecessary. There are a lot more features but 90% I would rather not have the inconvenience of having to use and a lot of the pure functionality of Vista has been lost, I think its far off revolutionary. I would have preferred to stick with Vista. . .

My concern with Windows 7 is its resource intensity. As in how much of the computers ram and cpu power does the OS hog to itself. We all know of the tragedy that was Vista.
If I'm buying a new laptop I want to know that the OS its running is using as minimal system resources as possible. And allows for fast and smooth running of both the OS and any other program thats installed.
Vista did NOT provide that.

Agreed, I bought a new laptop last year which had Vista Home edition preinstalled. Now the laptop itself was pretty high end. The hardware was sound and strong. But Vista sucked so much from the laptops resources that it practically CRAWLED. It was so bad that I couldnt stand it anymore and returned the laptop back to the store. Full refund.
for me its a waste not to try windows 7, especially if u have a high end pc. i used win 7 and its fast than vista. i also installed it on my 6 years old amd anthlon pc and i'm suprise it run fast and smooth with full aero. memory used only 30% while running ie and music, in vista it would be 1gb over already.

I really don't care about W7. Google are about to launch their netbook-notebook OS and the new Ubuntu is launching in 12 days from today. If you have Vista, there's no reason to upgrade.

I TOTALLY agree with him, there is no reason to upgrade to W7 from Vista, not at that price. It's a tiny bit more user friendly, but it does not run any faster for me, nor does it have features which I think are needed. DX11 will be available for Vista, there is no real reason to go from Vista to W7.
You are an idiot, there is a lot to be gained by upgrading to windows 7 form any version of windows. It uses less memory, it responds faster, better looks, user friendly, and the security is just about as safe as it gets. Upgrading is the way to go hands down.

everything in win7 is: smother, quicker, and more user friendly than vista.
-win7 loads in under 20 sec, vista took about a 1min. to start and another min. to load everything. (on the same laptop.)

But we do have games and plenty of apps. You just don't want to admit it because it's not the same games you play.

@0987654321284 You can download windows 7 via internet, burn it to a cd, install it from the cd cause when you putt the cd in, the computer thinks it is a upgrading cd.
After that you have to download an activator. Then you activate the trial version to the real version.

I did the Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade to my girlfriends Windows Vista machine and it screwed it up. Windows SUCKS. You'd think Microsoft would get a clue and start from scratch. They keep building on top of an antiquated old piece of shit OS. My girlfriends PC was a modern HP multimedia machine with nothing strange added and Windows 7 trashed it. Now I'm going to have to reformat and install Vista. What a joke! I have three Mac's and they all always work! I don't even need virus software!

i upgraded to windows 7 no problems, the installation finished in like 20 min. it check for compatibility and everything worked, even one of my games that was meant for XP works better on Win7 then it ever did on XP, all in all i <3 Win7 and i definitely recommend it to anyone, whether they have XP or Vista its a definite upgrade either way :D

i love windows 7 and when i was having some problems with it the guy that i took it to said if you upload software that's like 2 or 3 years old onto the system it will mess up because you've got a computer speaking fluent french vs a software that only speaks a decent amount. so update your software, like for your printer and stuff if you've had your for decades like me and you'll be fine. sure enough I was.

This guy is flat out wrong when he said upgrading will result in having to reinstall all your programs and start over.
I upgraded yesterday and Windows 7 did everything for me.
First it looked at all my programs to see if any where not compatible. Then it backed up all my documents, photos, music & programs.
The install took 2 hours (just let it do it's thing) and when I returned and booted up 7, everything was transferred and on the OS.
It was very easy and trouble free.

I disagree when you say that Vista users do not have a lot to gain. They indeed have the most to gain. I have noticed that Win7 has significantly fewer background processes. So, people with 1,2, 3, or 4 GB of RAM will notice a big difference when running 7, depending on what they use their computer for.
I have noticed also that games based off of the HL2 engine run faster on 7. This is probably due, on my computer at least, to the fewer background processes and more recent graphics drivers.

Xp will not be supported sometime this year. If you are strapped for cash and dont want to deal with the security flaws after they pull the plug then you should consider linux ubuntu. Its free and easy to use and set up with support provided and it is very secure unlike windows.

I have been using Vista for some time now and dont see what the big problem is. Its a great OS, much better than XP or OS X and I really havent had that many issues with it. I just did the free upgrade to 7 and find 7 to be quite unnecessary. There are a lot more features but 90% I would rather not have the inconvenience of having to use and a lot of the pure functionality of Vista has been lost, I think its far off revolutionary. I would have preferred to stick with Vista. . .

My concern with Windows 7 is its resource intensity. As in how much of the computers ram and cpu power does the OS hog to itself. We all know of the tragedy that was Vista.
If I'm buying a new laptop I want to know that the OS its running is using as minimal system resources as possible. And allows for fast and smooth running of both the OS and any other program thats installed.
Vista did NOT provide that.
So whats the verdict? Does W7 hold up to scrutiny?

Agreed, I bought a new laptop last year which had Vista Home edition preinstalled. Now the laptop itself was pretty high end. The hardware was sound and strong. But Vista sucked so much from the laptops resources that it practically CRAWLED. It was so bad that I couldnt stand it anymore and returned the laptop back to the store. Full refund.

I TOTALLY agree with him, there is no reason to upgrade to W7 from Vista, not at that price. It's a tiny bit more user friendly, but it does not run any faster for me, nor does it have features which I think are needed. DX11 will be available for Vista, there is no real reason to go from Vista to W7.

They had to be rescued by IBM with the Power PC chips and then after they still couldn't keep up they finally had to switch to Intel. Their IceBooks died at a horrible rate of 50% in the first year. Obsolete would have been a much better term. I mean, most computers that run Windows XP will be able to run Windows 7, although they may not be able to take full advantage of all its features.

I kept expecting him to ya Um K after everything he said. am I the only one? also, don't have much to gain from going to vista to windows 7? what is he smoking, this is SOOO much better than vista even with the new service pack that just came out for vista. I do agree the cost is two high but that's M$ for you.

Is he doing this as a plug for computer manufacturers? How is it any easier to buy an entire new computer, which is not going to have all of your software on it either, unless you can order it that way (for more money!), than it is to do a fresh install on a new system? Sigh.

He says, "Old Computer". Ala a 10 yr old 1.1GHZ AMD machine, which you've replaced ps and cooling fans on at least three times, yet still runs photoshop and other crap fairly well. At $120+ you're almost half way too an inexpensive emachine which blows most "old" computers away. I positively doubt by new computer hes thinking i900 series, 9GB ram, dual 1GB graphic cards. Hes saying you're reinstalling your shit anyway, so drop a couple of hundred dollars for that new computer and get it free.

I'm sorry, I was unaware of an international definition as to what "old" is in the computer world. Actually, most people would consider anything over 1-2 years as "old" although it would be perfectly sufficient for most tasks. He never specified what he quantifies as "old."

Most people my ass, thats rediculous. 1-2 years is not old by any stretch unless you're one of those goofballs that has to pull top framerates out of your L33T crack warez. The term is obsolete, which he probably should have used if you want to get all technical.

lol, what a newb, win7 is ages better than vista...
i had a 2yr. old dell laptop with vista, i got windows 7 from my university, so i upgraded, it was fucking easy, and i have the option of going back to vista if i wanted to (win7 makes a backup of vista)....
everything in win7 is: smother, quicker, and more user friendly than vista.
-win7 loads in under 20 sec, vista took about a 1min. to start and another min. to load everything. (on the same laptop.)
