I always loved this version of this song and its meaning came to me in a wave of revelation when my partner told me he might have cancer... and I immediately knew that I would be strong for both of us and see it through to the end. Luckily the cancer scare proved to be a false alarm but ever since, this song has become twice as precious to me.

I was surprised over the subject matter on this song when I first heard it years ago. Now, having lost my partner, it has extreme significance. "Hold on to yourself for this is gonna hurt like hell" really means get ready for the pain. The fact is, absolutely nothing can prepare you for what it's really like. And unfortunately, you cannot understand unless you've experienced it yourself. But such pain can only come from the loss of a great love.

You are so very right in what you say... having unexpectedly lost my partner in February, having watched helpless as a young vibrant man disappeared in a few short days...I still fight to push forward some days. But I find strength in music, and in realizing that, however painful it may be at times, I am still here for a reason.

I totally agree!! I heard this version FIRST before I realise its not the original version. I cried when I read the lyric especially o this part:" Oh god if you're out there won't you hear me. I know we're never talked before and oh god the man I love is leaving won't you take him when he comes to your door. Am I in heaven here or am I in hell at the crossroads I am standing." I just lost it and cried. It reminds me of my dad who died of cancer and I really wanted him to HOLD ON.

I saw where sarah saw this show about a young couple coping with Aids. I cant remember the movie or the title but she said that in the movie the wife was helpless watching her husband wasting away and how she struggled.

Hold on was what came of it.

THis song always brings tears to my eyes as I remembered my Dad who also died of cancer.

For me it was about what I really wanted to hold on to the fantasy-reality that he will be ok and by some miracle cure he will be alright. . .

Such is life . . .there are things I wish I shoud say, things I should do with him that we never did get to do.
