  • When I was young, at a small pizzeria there was a jukebox with that "I Love You Porgy" I still love her and Porgy. The other side of the 45rpm was "Love Me Or Leave Me".

I still have a copy of that precious 45rpm recording.

  • Nina Simone turned this into an extraordinary stand-alone song.

  • I'm only 15 and I call this music! I wanna thank Nina Simone because she teaches us a voice we all hold within ourselves :)

  • This is the definitive version of this song. Nina's voice conveys the genius of the song and her piano work is so sensitively beautiful. I grew up listening to this song. My father, a writer, sculptor and jazz music lover allowed only jazz and classical music in the crib. What a rendition! Thank you for the upload.

  • Y allá va mi alma con esta canción.

  • I love the atmosphere of this song.

  • Hey. Aint Ms. Simone BEAUTIFUL in this pic???? An EMPRESS Man...

  • @PhflyDan1 she should of left the Pies alone, it the best looking Nina I have seen.

  • @TheAremo Funny. If a little CRUEL... LOL

  • For My Maria...

  • The two "people" who disliked this ...

    You do not deserve ears.

  • !!!

  • I don't know if I want to cry. lol... but I love Nina's version of this song. I love her more drawn out versions though.

  • This was on the 'jukebox' at "Wit's End" in Atlanta back in the 50's. We used to play it over and over and I could never get enough of it. Here I am, years later, and I still love it.

  • I wants to stay here, with you forever Nina!!!

  • Great! Does anyone knows the chords of this particular version of Porgy?

because its different from others and I would love to play it!

  • Ah 1958, all about love ! My favorite rendition by Nina !

  • My mother, a fan of Nina Simone played this song over and over again. I was 9 yrs old in '60 and didn't understand what this song was about or what my mother was feeling. When I heard this song (Nina's version) today for the first time in many, many yrs I cried. Not only is it beautiful and touching by Nina Simone, but because it made me think of my late mother and the pains she endured while married. I also remember the love, smiles, hugs and lessons she gave her children. I still love you mom.

  • @DaddySweet100

Your love will live forever and you will miss your mom forever.

  • @DaddySweet100 god damn dude that's MEGA sad :(

  • Beautiful

  • how nice it is for a person like me who lived and died by "Little Richard" and Buddy Holly Chuck Berry etc. Back in the day To go back and appreciate the songs I was "bypassin" on the radio here in my later years. Now I can appreciate them all equally. . Age has a way of equalizing the brain cells haha. grew a brain

  • NOBODY does it better than Nina. Not even Billie.

  • stunnin

  • Summertime is my favorite but some really great songs came fro the Opera Porgy and Bess this is definitely one

  • This is Blues at its best !!! I was 16 when I heard this, and she struck my emotional chords back then and still does to this day. She was one of the greatest!!! GLXgrove

  • This is the version I heard on the radio back in 1958 when I was home sick from school. Nina Simone absolutely knocked me out--been a fan ever since.

  • Beautiful....which is typical Nina style :)

  • Luv Luv Luv her

  • See you Nina...

  • Wow !! Just recently have become a fan of Nina She really was something else What a voice so full of emotion, What a loss !

  • this is just perfect.

  • Christina Aguilera has a great voice for pop songs. Nina Simone was a profound, highly intelligent, legendary artist

  • First time I heard this was in a bar on Cocoa Beach. Worked at the Cape and went for TGIF and this was playing on the jukebox. Loved her ever since.

  • okay so this is the original, I don't see what's wrong w| Christina A.'s version...

  • @bklynchicka994 What's wrong with Christina A's version is it's not Nina Simone.

  • @musicbroad that's why it's called a tribute.

  • @bklynchicka994 OK, bklynchicka994. I'll buy that. I must have misunderstood. To be fair, I'll have to listen to Christina's version. I guess when you stated, "I don't see what' wrong w Christina A's version,.." you were challenging Nina's.

  • @musicbroad no not @ all, I respect the original

  • @bklynchicka994 i think christina's version is fantastic too

  • My gosh, what a tremendous voice. TRUE talent.

  • deffinately the best version of this classic

  • Best of the best

  • This was the first record I bought....and it's still the finest.

  • Oooh Nina! x

  • Without question the finest rendition of this song sung by anyone.

  • I was with Ice Capades and in 1958 & 1959 Nina Simone performed in the "Midtown" bar in Atlantic City. We rehearsed and performed at Convention Hall there for the entire month of August and every night we would spend some time at the Midtown. She was just coming into her own then and it was a kick seeing "I Loves You Porgy" become such a smash hit! I think Nina was really underrated until years later.

  • Incrediblly soulful song. Wow!

  • OMG,...

  • Porgy is set in Charleston SC not NC...

  • Does this version really predate the 1962 live recording we all know and love? Her voice sounds more like the "older" Nina...

  • I'm listening to this on replay..

  • "I Loves You, Nina!"

  • やっぱり最高ですね。五臓六腑にしみわたります。

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!

  • great phrasing

  • wow ! speechless...

  • Wom. Just wonderful. Don't forget that's her playing the piano too which she did on a lot of her records.

  • Glorious glorious - amazingly glorious.....

  • I always get goose bumps when I here this woman sing. I have this 45, I bought back in 60's. She is still with us in her vocals. Thank God for recordings.

  • Someday I know he's coming to call me

He's going to handle me and hold me

So, it' going to be like dying, Porgy

    When he calls me

But when he comes I know I'll have to go

  • many versions from christina to billy have been done, but this is the one definitive arrangment that peolpe remember when they think of porky and bess

  • One last track b4 bed

  • Nina Simone, voice and piano

    Jimmy Bond, bass

    Albert "Tootie" Heath, drums

  • This is definitely HER song... love it...

  • i want to cry sorry I am a man but so much soul gosh I love you NINA

  • @MrGoonerforlife your not the only one. ask me about seeing her in Detroit.

  • @MrGoonerforlife Dude, the same thing happens to me when I listen to this. Kind of embarrassing, but men have been known to be powerless before the siren's song.

  • @MrGoonerforlife

    Amen brother........

  • haaaaaa....

  • For me is also the definite version.

  • This is truly a wonderful song! Nice of you for posting!!

  • The definitive version. This is the first version I've heard and none makes me feel the same. This song is hers song.

  • I am German, so I am no native speaker...but is the wright conjugation "I loves"...? Or is this something special?

  • you're right the conjugation is totally wrong when compared to traditional english - it's bc she's emulating the regional dialect of black americans in north carolina in the 1920's. the song comes from the opera porgy and bess :)

  • @sbbbjm it's actually SOUTH Carolina...

  • @sbbbjm Agreed with sbbbjm, the term is artistic licence, remember this is very emotional song, not a term paper.

  • Der Song ist aus dem musical Porgy and Bess von George Gershwin. Informier dich einmal ein wenig über das Stück, dann weiss du, warum die kein richtiges Englisch singen...

  • Interestingly one finds 'I loves' in the wrong conjugation in British dialect, particularly in the South Wales valleys, where one might still hear 'I loves this song' or 'I do love this song' etc 'I likes' 'I hates' 'I wants' etc

  • :)

.... it's something special... pure nonsense or massive and mighty sense...

  • No its not technically, but she is speaking in the dialect of the diasporic African

  • Thank you all for your input!

  • can i get the piano part for this?

  • superb

  • the piano "part" for this is jarrett's one... no other

  • "It´s gonna be like dying..."

  • Best interpretation of this moving song. Got goose bumps...

  • Miss Simone...take it home...

  • Whitney's version is fabulous...This one is classic...hehe

  • love this song!!!! i'm in tears!!! love NINA SIMONE

  • This lady is very close to up there with Sarah and Ella. There is also a minority that consider her to be even better. This version is rated as superior to the Billy Holiday version.

  • it is simply the best! music and the singing! the soul! enjoy it!

  • There would be no Sade....without Nina Simone.

  • yes and about a thousand others too

  • It may be cold in my office but this song also gives me chills because this is just perfect. I love Nina.

  • Brilliant performer!!

  • One of the greatest recordings ever made.

  • @kevingfrost:

    Yes.

This song. Nina's phenomenal performance of it... is simply mesmerizing ~~

  • She has the most distinctive, haunting voice. I love her song "I put a spell on you".

  • beautiful

  • I first heard Christina Aguileras' version and I was like, "Huh? What is she saying?" Then I checked this out and I was like, "Aahh. Now I can understand the words and it's a beautiful song." I say always go with the original. Nothing and no one can beat the original! :)

  • except for hallelujah...cohen's version is just scary :P
