I am of Greek descent. I know the country and the people well. There have been stark changes in the country from the 70's till now. The most significant two are the Iron Curtain coming down and 9/11 creating an influx of illegel imigrants, then crime going drasticly, for a small nation of only aprox. 11 million peop. it is hard on it.

It is one of the most breath taking countries I have been too, especialy the Aegean Islands.

Since the Olympics and the help of the US and the EU Greece has made a significant transition in being more modern and up to European standards. My self I prefer the 70's and 80's when things were much more laid back and crime almost non-exhistant. Also the cost of living was cheaper then too...but it is more afordable than most EU countries & of course progress has a price.
