  • It can be quite easy BUT, the wrong combination of cards (very rare but it can happen) will make a game impossible to WIN!

  • We did this as a two-player on our first game and I was surprised at how easy it was to win.

  • I dunno if it's fair to call Lovecraft dry, I mean, most of his stories take place in or near bodies of water.

  • @guitarguyjones no.just, no.

  • Drier than dirt? I guess the Twilight Novels and its ilk have lowered the standard for good literature these days. Good review though

  • If they made a WW2 dice game, would they call it "Nazi Yahtzee"?

  • Good review, though I will disagree with your statement about less people making the game easier. I have played 3 two-player sessions, and the game was so easy that we weren't even close to losing. There really isn't any challenge at all, which is a shame because it's a fun game.

  • @kersplat12785 Apologies, I meant the statement that less people would make the game harder.

  • I play with 4 others and our games last an average of an hour... I thoroughly enjoy the game and although it may be easy with 5 players, it's simple to add some variation to make it much harder. And it's probably a good 'gateway' game into the Cthulhu mythos too

  • Tom as an Ipad user try buying FFG's Arkham Horror app it takes a fraction to setup AH and plays so well. Before I played AH only twice a year now we play it about once every 2 months.

Lovecraft is not "dried than dirt" for that we have plenty underworld romance novels.

  • So what is the average game time guys? I must admit Arkham Horror is my favorite game; but like Sam said, I have a heck of a time trying to get it to the table because it carries the stigma of being such a long game. This I might get folks to try.

  • Good review, thanks.

  • Nexus Ops is kind of like Twilight Imperium the dice game.

  • Meh. I prefer Arkham Horror which is my favourite boardgame. The story, the suspense, the variation and all that makes Arkham good has been ripped away. And from what I heard at the local store Elder Signs is ridiculously easy. Arkham Horror is so ogod as you actively 'build' a story together. This aspect is something Tom Vasel doesn't really seem to value that much. But that does not make Elder Signs a better or worse game. Arkham Horror is not without just reason so popular.

  • I really like playing the game, but I agree it's way too easy. I actually enjoy losing the very rare time it happens. Usually it's a cakewalk.

  • This game has a lot of non-dice stuff to be called a "dice" game...

  • @GMCiaramella It's all stuff that gives you dice, tells you how to roll dice, gives you spaces to put dice, or makes you have to roll certain things on dice. The dice are the main focus... don't let the bells and whistles fool you, this is definitely a dice game.

A GOOD dice game, though. I have this one - 6 plays so far since buying it 5 days ago.

  • yes! finally :D

  • Lovecraft, dry? You should read Ayn Rand, then come back and say that.

    Nice review.

  • @sigonsteele Hey I like Ayn Rand and Lovecraft!

  • @sigonsteele You say Ayn Rand is so dull but then consider the huge banking default bailout I'd imagine she is either hysterically laughing told you so told you so told you so or she is weeping

  • Ohhh.. those are fighting words: Lovecraft "drier than dirt." Given this is from the same man who has praised Star Wars novels in the past, I think I can deduce your literary tastes are not quite up to the same standard as your taste in board games. But you give good reviews, so I can forgive.

  • @walt776 That's elitism. I like Star Wars AND the mythos stories. Though granted Del Rey novels are toiletpaper more often than not. But the old novels of SW are really good in my opinion. It's just a different beast altogether.

  • @walt776 Lovecraft is the only thing I ever read other than Whitley Strieber that could terrify me out of my wits.

  • @walt776 I'm a fan of lovecraft's mythos...Just not his writing. I as most fans of Lovecraft will agree that his work is really hard to read, because it's so incredibly boring. :P

The mythos on the other hand is inspiring.

  • @Tapewormz I am a Lovecraft fan and I disagree with that it is boring and hard to read. I started reading Lovecraft when I was in 7th grade...so...yeah

  • @Sammo212

Well it's good that you enjoy it. By hard to read I didn't mean it was over my head. I meant that it's just too boring, and dry. I really enjoy Lovecraftian horror, just not the work of H.P. Lovecraft himself. I respect it, I just don't enjoy reading it. Take the lord of the rings. It's a boring read for a lot of fans, but they still enjoy the mythos and related works.

  • @Tapewormz I feel those are fans who went "oh man these are good movies...i love lord of the rings"...

  • @Sammo212 I was speaking more in terms of the hobbit vs the lord of the rings. The hobbit being easier to pick up, read and enjoy than the lord of the rings which sort of just drones on, gets really slow in spots...but elitists are going to be elitists right?

  • @Tapewormz I think that is because The Hobbit is actually a children's book when his other works aren't really.

  • @Sammo212 Yeah, it's a book written for children, but enjoyed by both children and adults.I've read many of Lovecrafts stories and they're dry. That's my opinion, and it's a popular one. It's the reason he died poor. That being said, he created a very fascinating mythos that lives on in the work of other writers and artists. It's obvious that his legacy is more successful than his actual writing. He had good stories, but was a poor storyteller. Anyways, I'm tired of discussing this.

  • @Tapewormz Then you shouldn't make shit comments. Do you know how much money they got, per word, for the stories written? Do you know where the stories were originally published? No, not without googling it you don't. He died poor because of the industry. He was actually popular at the time and inspired more people today than any other horror/suspense writer outside of Poe. Not like Lovecraft is fine, but saying he died poor because his writing style shows only ignorance on the subject.

  • @walt776 I agree...most people who talk down Lovecraft have actually NEVER read anything from him.

lol, the fact he says that Call of Cthulhu was a book series also makes me think he actually didnt read anything from him at all.

  • I love Elder Sign. I found that we had to tweak the rule about monsters to make sure that each card got a monster before adding more to that card, but I think that's what they meant and was not clear about in the rules. I played Arkham Horror a lot too, and I vastly prefer this. Excellent review!

  • @Darklordbrink Should take a peek at boardgamegeek to see if fantasy flight clarified the rules.

  • @Tapewormz Thanks! Actually, the FAQ for the game was just released and I was right about that rule.

  • Wow that game looked really fun.. definitely will be checking this one out.

  • Always will keep Arkham because of the overall depth of the game and Theme. Elder Sign is good, but used for shorter sessions.

  • I've got to disagree. I liked the game fairly well, but the Mythos theme is THE reason I play Arkham Horror. The gameplay is pretty good, but it's the sense of impending doom and exploration that makes that game great. Elder sign was fun, but a bit dry.
