Which means that torque is the amount of force you can develop, horsepower is how fast you can develop it.
Unfortunately, since horsepower was an "observed" quantity, literally related to a horse in a mill, it is not a linear derivative of force. Which is why the rest of the civilized world measures engine output power in Watts.

@HashECM to be simple, horsepower is how high in the rpms your motor can carry that amount of torque. a motor that makes 200hp and 300 ft lbs will rev to say 4500 before power falls, a motor with 300hp and 200ft lbs will rev to mabey 8000 before power falls off and it wont start making power till 4000 or so. in reality its all about the way you gear your car. less torque, put lower gears to make up for it. lots of torque but doesnt rev, put high gears so you stay in your powerband.

FD is a joke to me. There are RX8s that compete today and RX7s are very popular in autocross and road racing. Rotaries aren't allowed in Le Mans series any longer because, like I said before, they were banned from competition, deemed as having an unfair advantage.

Rotarys have no advantage in drifting cause weight isnt much of a factor when your going sideways anyway, some people drift trucks better than cars. offroad....no. how about for boat racing? or marine use?......nope. dirt track? nope. A mid engine piston and rod car will do just as good around the circut. Yes i will admit they are cool ass motors cause they make alot of power for their size.

@daitantamashii but you have to remember the more power you put on a smaller engine the faster it wears out. hell look at top fuel drag cars, they make 8000hp out of ony 500ci, and they have to rebuild it after every run. 2 stroke dirtbikes make alot of power for their size compared to 4 strokes....but they have to be rebuilt alot more often. Thats why alot of people do the v8 swaps cause they want the reliability and longevity along with their 5...7...800hp.

@daitantamashii the 1991 race at Le Mans was not the 787's debut race, nor did they "beat the competition badly" the 787's competition started falling out towards the end of the race due to mechanical problems.
@texalmighty1 Right and in terms of that particular race, when your opponents start dropping like flies because their cars are falling apart, then you're beating them pretty badly. Audi's cars are phenomenal because they outlast their competition.

Think about this, only a rotary can make this kind of power from this small of an engine... oh, except for the almighty 2 stroke. A modern day stroker, like a Suter SRT 500, makes over 200 WHEEL horsepower from 500cc. That's 430 horses from 1000 cc. Only rotarys and 2 smokes!!! Long live the wankel and the stroker, may they both live forever and prosper.

@Flessner71 People take the easy way out because either they don't know the potential of a rotary engine or don't care to "bother" with them, or they think everything is so simple, which you are also making apparent. It is pretty funny when a car can keep up or trump another car especially when they're running an engine with a fraction of the displacement of the other guy's. The answer isn't always the barbaric alternative of "MORE POWER!!!". A balanced car will always make quicker times.

@daitantamashii EASY WAY- swap ls1 equals more power, lasts longer. and wow it adds a hundred pounds to the front, just tune the suspension for the extra weight and you wont miss that rotary. yes. ill take the easy way. unless there is a way to make it faster than a 500ftlb ls1 for the same price then its always ganna be a good choice.

@Flessner71 I don't know what you're talking about. The only thing I can think of is A) drag racing or B) Formula Drift...either of these do not make up the WHOLE world of motorsports. FD is a joke to me. There are RX8s that compete today and RX7s are very popular in autocross and road racing. Rotaries aren't allowed in Le Mans series any longer because, like I said before, they were banned from competition, deemed as having an unfair advantage.

@daitantamashii ha, iv never seen any rotarys in major, sponsered drag racing. Nascar....no. Rotarys have no advantage in drifting cause weight isnt much of a factor when your going sideways anyway, some people drift trucks better than cars. offroad....no. how about for boat racing? or marine use?......nope. dirt track? nope. A mid engine piston and rod car will do just as good around the circut. Yes i will admit they are cool ass motors cause they make alot of power for their size.

@daitantamashii but you have to remember the more power you put on a smaller engine the faster it wears out. hell look at top fuel drag cars, they make 8000hp out of ony 500ci, and they have to rebuild it after every run. 2 stroke dirtbikes make alot of power for their size compared to 4 strokes....but they have to be rebuilt alot more often. Thats why alot of people do the v8 swaps cause they want the reliability and longevity along with their 5...7...800hp.

But yes i do respect the power they make out of the small package, but unless im racing in a weight limited class and i have no way of dropping 100 pounds, ill be sticking with my piston and rod motor.

I'm not trying to be an asshole to you, but so many people hate on these things because they don't know how insanely awesome they can be. I mean almost 500bhp from a 2.0L 3-rotor...lol seriously that's just nasty man, you got to admit that. The 4-rotor that was in the 787B cranked out in the neighborhood of 800-900bhp...out of 2.6L...again, that's just supreme in my opinion.

However, I agree, the 787B is probably one of the best racecars ever made.

A modern day stroker, like a Suter SRT 500, makes over 200 WHEEL horsepower from 500cc. That's 430 horses from 1000 cc. Only rotarys and 2 smokes!!!
