Of course, I meant to say a star "is" born. Compare this version with James P's own [on piano roll] or with Willie the Lion's version, all here on youtube, and it really is incredible to find that pre-war swing is alive and well in, err, Keswick? Where the hell is that?? Anyway, quite a find!!
This is a brilliant interpretation of one of the toughest pieces James P. Johnson ever penned. It was originally composed mainly for piano rolls, where craftsmen could cut holes where they liked and produce combinations of notes that were impossible for most pianists to reproduce, When humans try to emulate the old rolls, they tend to end up sounding garbled and flustered, like Frederick Hodges, also on youtube. But Nicholas Gill, whoever he is, has got the right swinging tempo. A star if born!
Sounded stunning in Lechlade this week too

The piano sounds more percussive than the drums.

It's fabulous! So airy sound like riding a pony at a canter in meadow.

Yep... with the breeze tugging at your hair as the pony breaks into a canter, then a gallop...!
