  • France lost this game because of Paul Le Guen, plain and simple

  • France's starting line-up: Lama, Desailly, Roche, Blanc, Petit, Le Guen, Deschamps, Sauzee (Guerin 81), Pedros, Papin (Ginola 69), Cantona. WOW !

  • Did anybody notice that at 1:36 they showed France 2 - 1 Bulgaria .... hahaha keep on dreaming ....we hauled ass in 1993 and 1994 I still remember those years even though I was very young

  • It's actually France's Left midfield that sucked.. 1. no one on the other side to receive the cross and the fullback was stupid as fuck

  • fuck Gerard Houllier

  • How the fuck is that Ginola's fault? Shows how little the French know about football tactics, no wonder they have failed to get a World Class squad past the group stage in 4 out of the last 5 World Cups LOL.

I can pick out 2 or 3 other players more at fault than Ginola for that goal. The fact he was booed across France in the League after this is an outrage. Pathetic.

  • God Is Bulgarian!

  • 50-hilqdi du6i sa kato popareni. To va sa na6ite mom4eta! ;)

  • Bulgariq be6e nai dobria otbor na sveta.. sporet men go e i sega ama nqaa mn hubavi rezultati. A MA SE PAK BULGARIQ SI E EDINSTVANA NA SVETA ;)

  • ГОСПОД Е БЪЛГАРИН (bow)

  • NAI DOBRITE;d

  • GOSPOD E BULGARIN :D

  • Pretty stupid by Ginola to be fair. There was one French player in the box and France know that if they don't concede they'll qualify so all they had to do was keep the ball. The captain really ought to be taking control of a situation like that telling the players to keep hold of it.

  • ..well...it was a very poor cross !

  • wow what a goal

  • 1:40 the score shows that France is leading by two goals , I think the french director of the game completely lost it lol

  • One of the greatest moments of Bulgaria's football history!

  • God is Bulgarian!!!

  • This and John Barnes against Arsenal in 1989 are reasons why you really should keep it in the corner flag.

Avevano calciatori davvero d'oro .. Erano una squadra d'esempio a quei anni!

  • Just pause it at 0:11, look at the clock, look at where the ball is, and look how many people are in the box, and think what you'd do if you were a professional footballer in that circumstance, knowing the scoreline was fine as it was. Crazy!! Still feel sorry for the lad though :(

  • To be fair, whilst it's harsh to leave Ginola out after this, it was a ridiculous ball to play, with only one guy in the box, barely any time left, and presumably only needing a draw. Clearly he knew he'd messed up once the goal had been scored.

  • @ChristopherHeward I agree with that. Incredibly stupid cross by Ginola. But the coach is still responsible. He can't put that much distance between himself and the result.

Despite Cantona and Ginola, Bulgaria were the better team at then time. Stoichkov/Kostadinov/Balakov/Penev/Letchkov

  • Those were the days, when every goalkeeper wore the same top (2:05). Like when every goalkeeper in the Premier League in the 90s had the Adidas top with green and purple and three strips on either side.

  • What a load of bullshit! People are only saying it is Ginol's fault because they want to be a dick! How can that be his fault? He is an attacker. If the other frogs came up and gave him support it would't have happened. i mean hes in there box ffs. How can it be his fault? If had gave the ball away on half way line and a 2 on 1 situation in favour of Bulgaria then you may have blamed him but thats amateur from a professional person in Houliers case.

  • So... who was the coach silly enough to leave Ginola on the pitch in the dying seconds when his team is defending a draw in a home game?

  • @JohnBonello3 To be fair he was a sub so to take him off just because he's not an expert defender would be a bit harsh - not really Houllier's fault.

  • Having seen this, I blame Ginola as well!

  • Thought I was the only one obsessed with BBC SPORT..

  • If they'd won more qualifying games while Houllier was in charge, France would have qualified.

He should take a look at his own performance over those months instead of singling out one (admittedly stupid) moment and blaming everything on that.

  • Ginola was a magician, but I don't think you could say he was a great player like Waddle or Silva. He contributed nothing defensively, drifted in and out of games and was occasionally magical but often anonymous.

Still I'd pay to watch people like him and Le Tissier for those moments and to blame only Daveed for this goal is ridiculous!

  • Not the brightest thing Ginola ever did, but Houllier is a dick and Ginola contributed 10 times more to English football than Houllier ever did

  • Re: BBC article - Ginola's cross is almost irrelevant, Bulgaria work an amazing goal with a one in a million finish.

  • As an Englishman this makes me smile...Bulgaria still had to play through France to score so maybe a bit harsh to blame Ginola entirely.

  • everybody here because of the bbc article?

  • @willyovertits which article?

  • @patladjanko there was an article on bbc sport about how ginola is going to sue gerrard houlier over comments he made in relation to ginola not holding onto the ball in the corner when he crossed it

  • @willyovertits lol they'd realy get over it :)) It was 18 years ago:)))

  • @willyovertits link the article pls :)

  • @zamboz01 ttp://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/15726014.stm

  • @willyovertits What article?

  • @willyovertits i am here because i am a bulgarian student in the uk and i got homesick

  • @willyovertits I am here because of the article in Offside...

  • Any footballer with a brain would have ran the clock down in a football match of this importance....crossing the ball with only 1 player in the box???!!

    Team Houllier!!!

  • i jus read the same article...talk about stuck up on history

  • lol ginola is suing houllier now for blaming him for the WC exit.

  • Gerard Houllier is a bell end!!!! There is no way Ginola was at fault for this goal. France still had 9 players behind the ball when the cross came in!

  • @romansoldier9 should have kept it in the corner and ran the clock down tbh

  • @romansoldier9 Yes you are right. But still I am wishing that Ginola take the ball to the corner, try to find out the corner kick. The goal is around 45.00 and the injury time is only 1 minute. Oh my goodness, Anyway, Kostadinov goal is also not easy. He could have missed it easily since it is from difficult angle. But I think the disaster has been started since they have underestimated Israel in the previous match.

  • Anyway, take the positive thing from this game. Because of this game, France was more motivated to win the World Cup in their home soil. They even dropped senior player like Cantona, Ginola and Papin and since Euro 1996 opted for Zidane, Henry, Petit who had brought the World Cup to them. I feel that if they advanced to 1994, the story could be different in 1998.

  • Absolutely fantastic...hair

  • This defeat is the reason France won the 98 WC, so it did have a positive outcome. Without it, Houllier would have stayed and the team would have never been rebuilt Aime Jacquet style. Cantona and Ginola stayed home, Djorkaeff and Zidane came in. That in itself made a world of difference, classic example of learning from defeat.

    "France 2 - 1 Bulgarie"

  • Platini's face.. some things are truly priceless

  • Platini has made som mean-spirited comments about individuals and nations over the years so it is a real treat to see his gutted face here.

  • Will never know why Ginola tried to cross that ball

  • what a goal great finish

  • Francia clasificadaaaaa !!! Pero a Francia 98 :D

  • one of the biggest surprises in football history!

  • France the best football country? LOL!

can i remind them of being in pot 2, below Norway and Greece! HAHA!

Better than the english twats? yes we may be twats, but not only did we get through our group and not have the whole world laughing at us, we got to round 2, where we lost to mighty germany! In European club Football for the past 8 years English clubs have mainly dominated, one year 3 of the 4 of our clubs reaching the semi finals!

  • France=Shame for such big European country

  • @mnsymsilen

too much big egos in this time, the lesson has been harshly learned for the next following years...

  • @yaglourt yeah France is a great football country ,maybe one of the best ,way way better then the English twats ,but their appearances in the last World FIFA Championship weren't the best ,i was an France football fan to 2008 when i became a Netherlands.I hope we see a Netherlands-France final in Rio..French football players always used to have and have big egos ,that is why the lost the final in 2006 to Italy, that was one of saddest days of my life the other was when Netherlands lost to Spain..

    Saludos

  • I'm Bulgarian. I was in France in 2006, and they still remember! Talk about it all the time.

I remember the joy that united the nation in difficult times, people celebrated in the streets and fucking forgot about politics. And all thanks to football.

I hope someday Bulgaria have the same team as in 1993/1996 and would please me as a conscious fan.

  • @Gangiuga

as far as i remember, nobody particularly gave a shit when france reached the final in 2006. there wasn't the same buzz around as in 1998.

  • @dsdan83

In the second paragraph i talk about bulgarian nation in 1994. Just missunderstanding! :)

  • 00:05 Most revered player in the history of Manchester United.

00:50 Was to win a world cup and a Euro.

01:47 This one was to be one of the best players of the Premiere league.

01:50 This one was to win more trophies than most players ever dreamt of.

02:30 Same thing, and also currently the man who's trying to make the team recover once more.

02:37 Has scored the third goal against Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final.

    FORTUNE!

    I agree with firesealman!

  • Sorry, but what Ginola did was UNFORGIVABLE. There were only a few more seconds left on the clock. The French player who took the freekick made a quick run behind Ginola to receive the ball again from him and rund down the clock. Instead, what does the stupid idiot that is Ginola do? Put a wild and aimless cross into a box that contained precisely ONE Frenchman (and missed him by MILES). He cost the French (and more so CANTONA) a World Cup appearance.

  • Who would think France in 2000 had win all that had to win?

  • hero bulgarian team,emil kostadinov,

  • gospod e bulgarin :)))))

  • i'm romanian, and I remember well those times , real shock how they qualified , there have been other teams that qualified to world cups with a goal in the last minutes , but this is i guess the only time, when the team that lost the qualification in the last minute played against the team that won the qualification in that minute.

  • Bulgaria Nad Vsichko !!!!!

  • The impact on the French players is incredible on par with their defeat to West Germany in that World Cup semi-final in 1982. It is sad for David Ginola to take all the flack. How many times does a player over hit a cross.

  • @jghatora1

i agree, ginola took so much flack for it that they almost forget how good of a player he was...i just dont remember people running in the corner and holding the ball to waste time then

  • They did forget about how good a player he was. Why was a player like David Ginola not gracing the top glamour clubs of Spain or Italy? Instead playing in the cold of the North East of England, which he did well. That tells me something. He came to England to salvage his career. Desperate to hold on to his talented dignity. Emotional nonsense from the French fans and press in which they never stood by their man. Complete nonsense.

  • @jghatora1 Yes man i agree with you. I m french and i never figured it out. All this shit happened because of a speech from this CUNT of GERARD HOULLIER. He disclaimed all responsability about this incredible defeat and didnt apologize. He laid the responsability at the ginola's door and blamed him in front of the whole France!!

Ginola did a mistake but it's human! Ginola scored against Israel and we should WIN as we SHOULD win against Bulgaria, but we didn't. We had to blame the whole team...

  • @jghatora1 yeah, shame on france for their reaction against ginola. he had no fault for that goal in my opinion. and im from bulgaria, this is one of the greatest matches in our football history.

  • @jghatora1 ...but this bitch of Houllier only blamed Ginola. I think he never bounced back after that and that's why he left to England like Cantona did. It gets me really sad 'cause this player deserved better and we could win the EURO 96 with Ginola and Cantona. Houllier is only a coward who never admits his part of responsability as he chickened out for the horrific World Cup 2010. HOULLIER FUCKING CHICKEN. (sorry for my poor english)

  • Comment removed

  • these are probably the only 30 seconds of football i could watch again and again (same time every year) xD

  • unfortunately for the French they didn't have a great handball-player like Thierry Henry in 1993

  • football is sosimple game just one goal makes the difference ...

  • second 1.39. loooool The match result is wrong isn't it?

  • When BULGARIA did the last goal in the last last seconds the french were so so so so angry.. i'm bulgarian

  • Being Irish, I like to watch this clip whenever I remember Thierry Henry's handball in the play-off for WC2010....it eases the pain! I remember this match clearly and my heart bled for the French at the time, but that's football - you need to be prepared for the bad days too!

  • @firesealman two words, so sad

  • @firesealman

God bless the Irish People ! 8-)

  • @firesealman shut up you irish whore. what handball? that handball is in your stupid fucking head............

  • @firesealman There is no handball here??

  • @firesealman Yeah but 5 years later France became world champions. Something Ireland will definitely not be doing...

  • God is bulgarian

    yes yes yes yes!

  • as french, i remember this match very well, i was 11 and i cried all night long.

Maybe the darkest day of french football.

the french manager was houillier said Ginola was a murderer of the french football or a thing like that...

domenech recent humiliations were pathetic and disgraceful, but that defeat was pure sadness and sensation of injustice. but the greatest teams always have to face that kind of things. 4 years later, France became world champion and won the euro 2 years after!

  • who is the left back, he stuck to him then just fell off him in a flash. lacklustre

  • france must have been shiiit

  • Remember that Sweden and Bulgaria (the two teams that qualified from this group) went on to claim the 3rd and 4th place in the World Cup 1994. This was an extremely hard qualifying group!

  • Bulgaria did so well in the 1994 World Cup yet they were seconds away from not qualifying. Ginola was blamed for giving the ball straight to Bulgaria to launch the attack for Kostadinov's goal. The players Bulgaria had in 1994 were a golden generation - Stoichkov, Kostadinov, Balakov, Sirakov, Ivanov, Letchkov, Yordanov, Yankov etc - and they had a brilliant World Cup. It'll be a long time before Bulgaria come up with such a group of great players at the same time.

  • Too bad we haven't seen much from Bulgaria since 94.

But those qualifers for USA 94 were something else. Classic games like Wales-Romania, England-Holland, Spain-Denmark, France-Bulgaria, Italy-Portugal.

  • BULGARIAAAAAAAAA

  • It's a joke to blame anyone from the French team at all. There was nothing wrong to be beaten by the Bulgarian team at that time. If anyone is familiar with the Bulgarian football at that time and the players that were playing for the national team will tell you this. The goal is pure class. The whole attack is. Real football fans are watching and enjoying attacking football and skills, rather then perfect def fences and tricks, like passing the ball around the corner. Ask Germany that year :))

  • what? the french blamed the guy who performed the freekick in the beginning? thats the dumbest thing ever.. did he let kostadinov SHOOT FROM ZERO ANGLE and score? no, of course, the stupid defenders did. the goalkeeper had no fault, because our guy's shot was incredible! greetings from bulgaria! im so sorry that im too young to remember this match, but its one of the greatest in our history.

  • I remember this match very well,I was 15 yrs old and all Morocco was happy,Bulgaria has excellent team and great players like balakov ,costadinov and stoichkov...

  • ginola just crossed a ball. i dont understand why he was blamed and banned to play for france.

  • @kisvarosipari I think it´s because he and the french team had specific orders to hold the ball far away from their goal. It was the last minute of the game and he gave the ball way childishly. In this kind of game, a manager goes mental with something like this. Although it´s too harsh to ban him forever, I completely understand Houllier (a shit manager none the less),

  • Well if this match would be played nowadays, the French player would take the ball into the corner instead of swinging it in...

  • Ahaha, well done bulgaria, fuck that fat wanker PLatini.

  • Wonderfoul goal!!!

  • ei mn ludo vreme ama sja i na ti kvalifikacii nz kvo she napraim, dano da doidat novi mladi momcheta i da doide novata generci mshini :)

  • BULLGARI YIUNACI!!!!

  • This was great French team, who narrowly missed out for the world cup, Sweden and Bulgaria made it and finished 3rd and 4th at the World cup. A team with Petit, Djorkaeff, Desailly, Blanc, Deschamps, Papin, Ginola and Cantona really should have made that world cup.

  • BULGARI YUNACI !!!

  • The other guy, was a portuguese forwar, called Domingos who scored more tham 100goals in Portugal, and did a fantastic duble with Kostadinov. They both score in FC Porto 5-0 victory in Bremen for the C.League in 94. Domingos now is the coach of Braga, who lead surprisely the portuguese champioship, and never won it.

  • I have a question for you guys. In wich club Kostadinov play at that moment and what was the player in that club that make with him a fantastic pair?

  • kostadinov played in porto at that time and it was his best season there - 16 goals from 22 games

about the other guy, i'm not sure who do you mean. because they were three of them - kostadinov, joao pinto and timofte ;-)

  • after tis match..the coach gerard houlier blame all the fault on Ginola who cross tat ball.. Shame on u houlier !!!!

  • man i have a question: kostadinov didnt play any match in world cup 94 right?? if im right, can somebody tell me why he didnt??

  • he played all the matches but he couldn't score

  • yeah youre right, waht a stupid question i asked!

  • emil kostadinov played in all of the 7 matches!

maybe you mean that luboslav penev (at that time valencia's captain) didn't play in usa? he had a disease, as i recall it was hepatitis or something

  • @mellamoramonsalazar what? lol? He did play a lot of matches.

  • @m0r7r3d i was only 2 years old at WC94 hehe, and the few matches ive seen of bulgaria in USA94, i havent or dont remember seeing kostadinov playing, but somedoby answered my question a long time ago, and yes, he actually played a lot of matches

  • Ginola is God!
