A very scholarly interpretation, indeed. I have seen quite a few performances of this tragi-comic piece in all its glory - including a stunning rendition in a shabby wedding dress, I believe (or was that "When I Get Big"?) - but this presentation certainly holds it up to the stark white light of critical inspection and introspection and it is not found to be wanting. A vital meditation on desire unrequited and the need to divest ourselves of our earthly attachments and illusions......
I had this song on an old cassette that i taped off the radio in the seventies by a band called The Notlees ???? I can even remember the words the DJ was saying over it, ie 'recorded in a bedroon in Hatfield etc etc .... 'on something like Nicky Hornes show or somesuch, maybe Capital Radio. Ive been looking for it for ages, has anyone got a copy of tThe Notlees doing this on mp3 that they could send me, I love this song !!! cheers
