I recognize this robot, I used to have the figure in the 80s. I don't know if anyone from the UK remembers the toy shops in the 80s (Taylor McKenna, Neil's, Beaties, Nutcrackers, etc. ) but they had all the mecha in there, long before anime was even known.
It's only in now in retrospect that I recognise them all...Gobots, Tosho Daimos, I had them all and must've binned them in the end. In the 90s those shops then specialized in model cars and D&D instead, hmm.
The Blue robot combination, the scales and lines, and nature of the larger Red spaceship/robot to the smaller Blue one bear more than a passing resemblance to Gundam (Mobile Suit).
Xabungle was more light-hearted and not possessed of quite such an intensely geeky (in the best sense of the word) fan-base that grew to insist on reality, depth of storyline, and character development. But the similarities are evident.
You don't get energy like this from Anime openings nowadays.
Don't get me wrong, there's been some really good ones over the past years, but feel that energy! It's like it's radiating off the screen saying "Hey, asshole! You're about to watch something awesome! Get excited!" Outside of JAM Project, I can only name about a dozen other musicians who can bring the energy like that.
Xabungle looks more real robot than anything from the super robot infested realms of the good old 70s. Macross characters looked very 70s too. Another point to consider is the proven fact that Macross was supposed to be released in 1979, but due to problems in its making was released until 1982, what gave the production team more time to refine their designs.
true that...its a real robot anime afterall...but i wasnt refering to the robot designs but the gfx and animation...imo those dont look comparable to macross...look at their rispective intros and still macross looks more like an 80 anime...btw i have nothing against xabungle designs i m just talking about gfx etc...
Err... That's what I expected you to understand when I mentioned the amount of episodes in Xabungle. You see, what the production team saved in animation costs with its low quality gfx let them make a longer series than Macross. Besides, Tomino since the begining made Xabungle a comedic show, so animation really wasn't that important. Still, Xabungle has some of the best scenes I've seen in mecha anime. That ICBM catch was legendary...
i know what u mean but imo even god mars,a 1981 super robot series, looks better and is over 60 episodes long....aura battler dunbine,a 1983 real robot series, also looks better than xabungle and is almost as long as it.
Well, Kunio Okawara designs for Gundam and Xabungle are more old fashioned while Kazutaka Miyatake designs for Dunbine look more futuristic and alien. Still, Xabungle and Gundam designs are supposed to be more utilitarian, while Dunbine is a super/real robot hybrid from another fantasy magical world... No wonder they look waay different...
Are you applying modern standards of animation to something from the 80s? Because rendering technology has improved tremendously in 20 years. If we hadn't gotten better graphic technology all anime would look like this.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, I am comparing this to other 80s animes like Zeta Gundam, Space Runaway Ideon, Macross, Guyver, to name a few. Maybe my complaint lies with the exceedingly horrible character design of the show compared to others not so much as the quality of motion animation.
If your problem is the character designs then it is worth noting that unlike Z Gundam, Ideon, Macross, or Guyver Combat Walker Xabungle is a comedy series. The characters were made intentionally goofy looking, with the main character frequently being mocked for his melon-shaped head. The motion is fine for an 80's anime but the designs are intentionally silly as opposed to serious since the series is the same.

Well, I did not know anything about the show. But, now that I know it is a mecha comedy with ugly design, at least I know now not to watch it. Thanks.
@KronnangDunn No it's not, for me anyways. I just don't like the acid trip ending and well most of the characters. It has a very typical premise for a Giant Robot type anime and hardly the revolutionary anime it's fans herald it to be. It's so called deep storyline is just some crap written by some depressed guy. In another words, not a masterpiece like most of the fanboys claimed it to be. If you really want deep storyline and interesting characters, I suggest any U.C Gundam series.
@SMAXZO What? LOL EVA had pretty awesome battle scenes and very stylish looking mecha. Besides, the character designs were years ahead of their time... I watched it around 1997 and was amazed by its quality...
@KronnangDunn I just have to say their design is not stylish, well to me at least. When you said that the character designs were ahead of its time, you are surely mistaken. Their design is practically average, there is nothing new to it and don't get me started on the characterisation.
@KronnangDunn Well, you do have a point but still character design mean nothing if they're just 2D characters as in flat, uninteresting and as far as Evangelion is concerned, annoying.
@SMAXZO Yup was made to vent out Hideki Annos depression esential he was shinji and my god can you get annoyed at shinji. Except instead of takeing it as just that i take it as a good thing as you can hate shinji one moment then be rooting for him the next. The tripy ending was due to budget cuts. Sony the sponsor pulled funding after ep 19 (were eva eats the angle) was too gory for family prime time. Anno made the movie end of evangelion as a big finger to everyone and to stop the death threats

I do not see how it sounds stupid. I hate comedies - end of story. The director does not change anything, and the fact that it is "classic" does not change anything. Try to differentiate between an actual stupid statement based on a logical error rather than just a bias that is not the same as yours.
I meant "stupid" in the way that you could miss great shows with lots of potential just because they're comedic. Also, every work directed by Tomino deserve a watch.
I am not saying I will not watch shows with any humor, but in regards to this show, with the character designs I do not like (and assuming it follows classical anime design of really great looking introduction, bad animation during the series), I do not believe I would want to sit through something like this.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I do not even know what that means, but that is the only reason why anyone watches any sort of televised entertainment; if it appeals to them, be it through plot or graceful screen play. As I already mentioned, the character designs were not the only thing that bothered me; someone mentioned it was a comedy, and I simply hate most comedies, be they animated or not. I find it amusing how people can rain insults or illogical arguments on someone who states a difference in opinion.
@KeeveSuikoden2Hero Alot? i am sure you can still be catching up the one from the 70s then soooo many in the 80s kinda quiet 90s and is dulling down. Still soooooooo many from the 70s and the thing is a number of them are still going. Hurts my head to think about trying to watch them all.
