you are a great teacher...but i have a question how did you get those different shaded images through photoshop.... I tried but i cant figure it out....plz help.....
Even though I didn't use your exercises to follow along with you, I used a magazine I had lying around and payed special attention to the different aspects of the pictures you were talking about and started to draw along with you. While I still maintained my own methods of drawing, I was suprised when I stopped to take a look at what I had done. By integrating your logic of value into my style I found a significant improvement..!
its impossible to srew up this, as it is impossible to draw100 percent the same. You just make yours thing, which sometimes is beter, sometimes worse.
I used the gradient map tool and divided rgb values into a scale of 10. RGB at 255 is white...0 is black. Increments of roughly 25 find the values in between. Another option is two do a gif with a set palette of the 10 values. Turn dithering off and you get a similar effect.
i dunno i this might help, but i'd make the image black and white first then use posterize then select by color then transfer piece by piece. at least that's what i did on GIMP 2.6. if that doesn't work then might as well use PS under Wine
Actually I was losing my patience doing this...but people a lot of people ask for things slow. It would have been much quicker if I did this by eye and intuitively found my own value shapes. But, this is for people who are just starting out. If anyone decides to take the time to do all 4 exercises they will surprise themselves with good portrait of Marilyn Monroe. Plus in the process they will have taught themselves their own strategies to see.
I had an art teacher who insisted we did all are life drawrings with detailed acurate painstaking measurements. Its a nightmare, i prefer quick poses by eye and I think your more this way inclined too as your voice is progressively losing its enthusiasm....
This is set up to get good results and teach a lot of intuitive things that can only be learned by experiencing them. That is why there are so many pages. It is reverse engineered. I agree once you learn it is much more fun and challenging to be quick and instinctual.
if i continued doing these exercises with various images would my drawing done by eyeballing and intuitive get better? or should i try drawing by eye and intuitive to make my art more accurate?
I'm measuring every single thing as a way to show what I would be eyeballing. If you do this exercise as a beginner you probably want to measure a lot. The more experienced you are you only meed to measure a few points accurately to start. Other than that you would take the time to double check eyeball measurements when something seems off
not exactly what you would want to do is start from something that your into, something easy like shapes. All you have to do is draw the shapes and shade it in, i suggest a circle because it would look better this way you would have a feeling of what it is supposed to be. i myself draw but i stated with anime and build up my skills for there
I don't use this method to draw. There are concepts in this method that I use. This is an exercise that lets someone starting out learn to see differently. Basically it helps you teach yourself and it creates a portrait that will have a strong likeness with an degree of realism.
