I'm from Algeria,i love listening to Karen Matheson cose she has a magnificent voice despite i don't undertstand of scottish or irish,as a matter of fact, the Celtic music is great to listen to!!
Interesting, used as a waulking song it would go at two or three times this speed, one hell of a lick, bang .. bang .. bang .. bang ... One lady would sing out the lines (sometimes whatever came into her head) the rest would come in on the refrains --- much the way some sea shanties worked. Interestingly I've heard it suggested that some waulking songs were adapted from earlier men's rowing songs, but speeded up. Hearing it slowed down like this it does rather suggest a rowing rhythm. Beachd?
This is the only song I've actually got high marks for in my whole gcse in music. Lovely song. Sad though that my Scottish boyfriend can't sing it :( but he knows it well. Lovely song though the fact that it's an Irish story sung in Scottish Gaelic confuses me.
Thank you for uploading this song because it's helping me with my GCSE coursework about world music. I find the Gaelic language both beautiful and graceful yet mighty, just as this song is. Although GCSE music is difficult due to the amount of coursework, it is a useful, enjoyable skill and you learn about many amazing songs such as this one.
@jleer1 Mate - I completely agree. Though this saved my life for my own GCSE, I was strongest on this one, purely because of my facination for the language, and the culture. plus, it is jsut such a beautiful piece. I was the only one in the class to actually enjoy it.
The "waulking" songs were sung by the women when they were pounding out the tweed. It's a working song. Usually sung at a faster tempo but you know how they like to take the old tunes and put their spin on them which I just love. Keeps them alive.
@danell12345 first of all, i'm a girl. second of all, yes. i'm serious, considering the spelling changes the meaning of the word. walking: moving about on 2 feet. waulking: pounding tweed cloth against a board to soften it.
