I think they meant humanity. When you think about it they said only about 400,000 people (probably minus 10,000 in that from the panic) will be saved, the rest will die. That's 5.6 Billion people dead. Plus the world as they knew it changed. If the water ever receded pretty much everything was destroyed, including the ground itself. It would be impossible to rebuild, in the U.S. anyway. Only place that would be viable is Africa. Everything else is too torn up from the earthquakes.
