Funny thing about this fight, the Blues & Rangers were frequent trading partners in those days, and at least half the players fighting were teammates on both the Rangers & the Blues—all 3 Plagers, Sanderson, Fairbairn, Bert Wilson, Davidson, Jerry Butler, Pierre Plante, Greg Polis, Ted Irvine.
Gasoff vs. Bill Fairbairn has to be one of the all-time mismatches. Ace Bailey here is the guy who was on one of the planes that hit the WTC on 9/11/01. I remember seeing this on WOR Channel 9 in NY.
@RRaquello did you know that bettman thought it was the old school "ace" bailey who died on 9/11, and not the more current one who played for the bruins, blues etc in the 60's and 70's!!
If this was the same fight I remember, Gassoff took on and took out about three Rangers that night. I remember Dan Kelly calling it, and Gassoff was clubbing people left and right. Thing is, Gassoff was on his way to becoming a very good overall player before the accident.
I was at this game. I cannot believe there is footage of this!! This was the most unbelievable spectacle I have ever seen. I was a teenager at the time, and I'll NEVER forget this night. This is just a very, very small taste of what actually went on this night. I remember the POLICE were getting ready to come onto the ice. It must have taken 20 minutes to read off the penalties. Bob Gassoff was the enforcer, and I've never seen anyone like him since.
Imagine if Bert Wilson and Gassoff would have gotten together during the brawl....that would have / could have been a very good bout. Bert was one skilled scrapper and Gassoff as just junkyard dog TOUGH.
I remember watching these boys play when I was 4 or 5 yrs old,I dont remember much at that age but I do remember my Dad and grandpapi yelling at the TV back then.lol good memories
This brawl took place during the 1974-75 season (back during the NHL's bloodbath days). Unfortunately it goes down as probably the WORST camera work in the history of hockey brawls fights as the cameras literally missed all the main fights of the brawl. And RIP Bob Gassoff. One of the greatest.
Jerry Butler fed Gassoff a few good lefts. That was nice to see.
