@gulchen123 It is telling you that you are playing an E. Depending on the tuner you have, the 1 either refers to the 1st string being E, or it is the 1st octave E. Regardless, it is registering an E and it has nothing to do with fingering a note. I hope that helps!
My violin tuner keeps saying my a string is just # sign & my d is c and g is f.i am afraid of tuning it with the pegs because it broke before but i tried again, & i did what you said i loosened it first, and then tuned it but i can't get it passed c for some reason, its either b or c... & i had it tuned a few days ago by someone who sells, builds,& repairs violins...i just don't know if this is a big problem,it does sound odd to me which is why i got the tuner..help would be appreciated.thanks.
@GothicLoser411 It sounds like you need to have someone help you tune it with the tuner. If you can go back to the person who tuned it for you, see if they can watch YOU try to tune it with the tuner and tell you what you need to do. This way you will know if there is something wrong with your tuner, or if you just need help learning how to use it.
@ponkadolz Depending on your tuner and how narrow and long the tuner clip is, you can clip the tuner to the bridge. Most tuners will also clip to a tuning peg.
@dec11ad The calibration button is if you want to tune your instrument to pitches that are not "standard." (Standard is A=440) It can also be used to "sync" two tuners. Even though digital tuners like this are supposed to be perfect, they really aren't. One tuner might tune slightly lower or slightly higher than another. The calibration button can fix this. I would suggest you just ignore it. Unless the tuner is broken, it will be close enough at 440.
@DaKurlz1 I play much more fiddle than I do violin music. I suppose I'm somewhere in the middle. I'm a better teacher than player, though I do love to play!
@trung0307 It sounds like your tuner is giving you the number of the string as well as the name. I am assuming you have the tuner set to "violin" or that it is a dedicated violin tuner. 1E, 2A, 3D, 4G
hi:) i have a tuner at home already, but i dont really know how to use it. It's different from yours,It looks like a scale. It doesnt show what pitch u are on but it only shows green when it's good and shows red when it's out of tune. I believe that u know how to use it too so can u plz give me the instructions? Thank You:)
@jacquelynntran If it doesn't show what pitch you're on, I can't imagine how you could use it to tune. There must be a pitch displayed somewhere on the tuner, either on the LED screen, or you select the pitch on a switch somewhere on the tuner.
Hello, I was wondering, because i'm getting back into violin, on average how much a tuner costs generally, and how do you know which way to move the fine tuners?
@BTIOlover Hi Jade - The tuner shown in the picture usually runs about $25.00 (2010 price). If you want to the raise the pitch, you turn the fine tuner clockwise. If you want to lower the pitch, you turn it counter clockwise. If you're still not sure, watch the tuner and see if you are getting closer or farther from the correct pitch. Then you'll know if you went the right way!
Wait so do you tune each string to the same pitch and each string has to be in a middle tune. And you have to adjust same so you can go either high or low till its perfect right?
Please tell me i really dont want to misundersand it.
@Manisha106 You have to know the name of each string. Then you tune the string until the tuner says the correct name for the string you are trying to tune. When it says the correct name, then you tune it so that the indicator is exactly in the middle.
I'm trying to learn how to play the violin by myself and Gods, your video helped me SO MUCH. I must say from all videos regarding tuning lessons yours was the most helpful~~ Thank you!
so sad. we don't have that here in cagayan de oro city philippines. we only have digital tuner for guitar but i don't know if its also usable in violin. lol.
this was so helpful, becuase yesterday my violen was perfectly in-tune and today i took it out to play it and it was HORRIBLY out of tune, so i serched up "how to tune your violen" (becuase my orchresta teacher never tought us how to yet) and after i wachted this video i learned how to tune my instrument for the first time by myself!
I use a chromatic tuner for my violin but can never really tune the A string properly and the fine tuner is practically wound down into the violin...but the tuner is still saying that it's tuned to an E or F string..any help?
Start by unwinding the fine tuner. Then try to tune it by turning the regular peg. Listen to the strings. They each should get higher from G to D to A to E. If it says the A string is an E and it is LOWER than the E string, tune it higher until it says A. Then use your fine tuner to get it just right. If it is HIGHER than the E string, then you are lucky it hasn't broken yet and you will need to tune it down slightly. You shouldn't have to turn it much with the regular pegs.
Tuners like this one are manufactured under at least three different names: Barcus Berry, Tune Tech, and Intelli. Barcus Berry is silver instead of black and the model is "Soul Mate." The exact one I'm using in the video is the Intelli IMT-500. The model number for the Tune Tech is TT-500. They all work identically, as they are all the same tuner.
Thank you for your video. It was the most helpful one out there. All the other videos talk about tuning and don't actually play the note.. or the ones that do play the note are actually off-key!
I tried tuning my violin once. I tuned it to tight then suddenly my bridge fell off. I was very worried that I broke my violin. but i searched in the internet that I'm the only person who's bridge fell off because of tuning
This happens more often than you know! I can't tell you how many people think they broke their violin when just breaking a STRING, let alone having the bridge fall. I can imagine how you must have felt! It's scary when you don't know. You won't be afraid of this now, and you will become good at tuning your violin. You can help other people then!
thank you. your video helped me understand what was wrong with my tuning. I have a tuner which is almost the same as yours but it can change modes for different instruments like a guitar. I still can't tune my violin because I don't have fine tuners so before i tune my violin i'll just wait till my mom buys me my fine tuners
Thank you Chris,I just bought a fiddle and because I play a little guitar,I thought It might come a little easier. There isn't any you tube videos of much value for tuning till I come across your's.You are a very good teacher.
and you put this vid on youtube on my cousins b day

My tuner says IE or 1E sometimes.
What does it mean? Does it mean that I am on E string or am I on first finger on E string?

If I get you right it is an open E for violin. It says also 2A, 3D and 4G. I guess all are just open for violin.
