She took a great song from Tom Waits, and hacked the everloving shit out of it.

She had a great voice until she became a hack to commercial success.

. Just because you like (and I) the Tom Waits version better does not make it actually better, but only makes it his version of his own song, not hers Nor does it make her a hack. Actually for a cover it is pretty close to exactly how he did it. You need to listen to waits again to see how close. A pure cover.

I don't think artists do covers because they are trying to mimic the original. I think they do them becasue they love the original and want to share it with their audience who may not have run across it otherwise. This is a great song and I enjoy both versions for differnt reasons. I just enjoy looking at Nora more than Tom.

A guy mistakingly leaves out possessive punctuation, states a valid point and this is the great response that he gets.I'm not insulting the artist, what I am saying is that the song lost its intended atmosphere.

Tom Waits isn't just about chord progressions and a melody. His songs carry deeper connotations, that's why it's almost impossible for a person to cover one of his songs. I'm sure that we can all agree on that?

I think NJ is fantastic, and nails this song, but as a big Tom Waits fan I can't believe she mixed up one of my favorite lines of all time at 1:05: "Money's just something you throw off the back of a train. Got a HEAD full of lightning and a HAT full of rain." I imagine a street musician, whose mind is full of "creative lightning" , who either can't express himself or is unappreciated, with his old beat up cap laying on a street, filling up with rain instead of money.
