well i think that after the sun disappears, the earth should be getting the sun's light for 8 minutes, but since it's not pulled by gravity(the gravity between earth and the sun goes away just as the sun disappears.) It'll appear that the earth is normal (for the 8 minutes) then we'd be shrouded by complete darkness ;O

@rapid303 I believe it is because the earths gravity is strong enough to keep the moon from being sucked away and into the sun, just like the suns gravity is holding the earth and all the other planets in orbit around it.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the reason we don't slop towards the sun is because the sun is also orbiting, and so its position and its subsequent bend in space time also moves. If the orbits suddenly stopped or changed direction we would fall into the sun.

However, the curve in space you see the sun causing in the video is misleading, and is just a simplified example. The video clip shows a dip in space where the sun sits, but in reality this divet in space does not exist on a flat plane, rather it exists all around it, in every direction.

@windscare21 - The Earth has momentum, so it essentially is "falling" toward the Sun, but this 'falling' is exactly balanced by the movement of the Earth around the Sun.

Einstein proves that an object is to be accelerated to speed of light it will require infinite amount of energy, something related to the equation e=mc^2. You can probably search for information about that.
But then of course until someone smart enough to prove otherwise, Einstein will remain correct.
KE=1/2mv^2; so the faster you move, the more energy you have. and if you have more energy you have more mass(energy is directly proportional to mass; E=mc^2). But, the more mass you have, the more energy you need to speed up. Therefore you would need an infinite amount of energy to be able to have an object with mass to move at a speed of c. Light, is a photon with no mass, so it can travel at c.
@Palmerater That would only be true if the Earth were also traveling at the speed of light. Since the Earth is going much, much slower in it's orbit, if the sun were to "disappear," releasing it from it's orbit, the last ray of light would eventually pass the Earth and leave us in darkness. Think of it as two cars on a freeway, even though one is going very fast (Earth) it will eventually get passed by a car going the speed of light.
Hang on...gravity acts from the centre of an object i.e the sun does it not? Though this does not seem to fit with the whole "fabric" idea. If the effects of gravity are simply caused by the mass of the sun causing a curve in the fabric, and the earth is in orbit as a result of that curve, that suggests that there is some gravitational pull from underneath the fabric, not from the centre of the sun. I'm sure I haven't just found a gaping hole in Einstein's theory, but can someone please explain?
@Wellsypig15 I'm not sure (this relativity theory is still hard for me to comprehend), but 1 thing i know is that universe is not 2 dimensional as a sheet of some fabric. this model makes it easier to understand the curves in time-space, but trying to replicate 3D object in 2D is inaccurate, so you shouldn't connect every aspect of theory to the model of heavy objects curving this flat sheet, not sure if i made any sense though.

if light was fastest thing and nothing can go faster than light and if time isnt light (some have theories light is time) time then time goes slower than light therefore i see things in the future.

I believe, that all these brilliant explanations still only cover the effect of gravity, but not its cause. The cause is still explained by mass effects. And WHY that is, is still a mysterium. Isn't it?
Also, that a change of gravity always comes in waves... I am not convinced, that the waves of gravity variation are the cause of gravity. Of course, the information of gravity change cannot travel faster than at light speed. But gravity itself?

This is great, this gives us something to look forward too, and work towards.... So what happens, when we find the answer to the quintesential question?? Do you think we stop there?? Actually Einstein did not discover that the speed of light is the same for all observers. It had been discovered by several experimenters. Einstein took it as the basis of his theory.

And another fact which proves that this result is probably false is the explosion of a supernovae 50 years ago (if i remember well). If neutrino do travel as fast as they calculated, we should have seen them 2 years before light, but we didn't... we saw them 2 hours later...

I don't think so, and my teachers neither (i'm studying physics at university). One of them told us that they probably forgot to add a correction due to the high level difference and that time passes differently (thanks to einstein theory of general relativity).

@starview1 actually the latest discoverings of neutrinoes exceeding v=c prooves that validity of a RELATIVELY new theory, caled string theory. the common opinion is that neutrinoes, because of their small mass, pass through other dimensions on their way during a high-energy path.

@ddandyy science doesnt always need experiments to prove something, as long as no experiments can prove it wrong, a theory will remain "correct" until further theory/experiments prove otherwise.
Einstein proves that an object is to be accelerated to speed of light it will require infinite amount of energy, something related to the equation e=mc^2. You can probably search for information about that.
But then of course until someone smart enough to prove otherwise, Einstein will remain correct.

m=mass(kilograms)
v=velocity(meters/second)
c=300,000,000
KE=1/2mv^2; so the faster you move, the more energy you have. and if you have more energy you have more mass(energy is directly proportional to mass; E=mc^2). But, the more mass you have, the more energy you need to speed up. Therefore you would need an infinite amount of energy to be able to have an object with mass to move at a speed of c. Light, is a photon with no mass, so it can travel at c.

@Palmerater That would only be true if the Earth were also traveling at the speed of light. Since the Earth is going much, much slower in it's orbit, if the sun were to "disappear," releasing it from it's orbit, the last ray of light would eventually pass the Earth and leave us in darkness. Think of it as two cars on a freeway, even though one is going very fast (Earth) it will eventually get passed by a car going the speed of light.

Hang on...gravity acts from the centre of an object i.e the sun does it not? Though this does not seem to fit with the whole "fabric" idea. If the effects of gravity are simply caused by the mass of the sun causing a curve in the fabric, and the earth is in orbit as a result of that curve, that suggests that there is some gravitational pull from underneath the fabric, not from the centre of the sun. I'm sure I haven't just found a gaping hole in Einstein's theory, but can someone please explain?

@Wellsypig15 I'm not sure (this relativity theory is still hard for me to comprehend), but 1 thing i know is that universe is not 2 dimensional as a sheet of some fabric. this model makes it easier to understand the curves in time-space, but trying to replicate 3D object in 2D is inaccurate, so you shouldn't connect every aspect of theory to the model of heavy objects curving this flat sheet, not sure if i made any sense though.

I believe, that all these brilliant explanations still only cover the effect of gravity, but not its cause. The cause is still explained by mass effects. And WHY that is, is still a mysterium. Isn't it?
Also, that a change of gravity always comes in waves... I am not convinced, that the waves of gravity variation are the cause of gravity. Of course, the information of gravity change cannot travel faster than at light speed. But gravity itself?

@kittleboy gravity travels with the speed of light which is approximately 300.000 kilometeres per secundum in a vacuum. so it takes about 8 minutes for any wave (light of gravitation) to travel from the Sun to the Earth. so the effect is not instantaneous.
