I forgot the Nilo-saharan speaking nomads of the sahel who, not only speak a closely related language, but also share many of the same customs. They have however lost their love for cattle in favor of camels (for obvious reasons) but have many others that tie them to the ancient kingdom.
BTW, this is not to say the Nubians were the ancestors of those tribes but were, without a doubt, the same people, practicing the same customs. The desertification of the sahara pushed these tribes further south where they developed cultures that suited the tropical environment they found themselves in. Still, they have remarkably retained many of those ancient customs (their gods for instance). More research needs to be done further south to shed light on the history of this lost civilization.

I think where this documentary failed was in excluding southern Nilotic tribes who share many of the same customs depicted in those walls: For example, the Dinka cattle culture, their wrestling, many of those tribes wear leopard skin as depicted above, as well as the feather in their heads.
