This is without question the most terefying scene I have ever wittnesed in a movie, and I have seen a ton of movies. For me the essence of the terror is the fact that there is nothing in human emotional evolution that prepares us for the transformation into a compleately different physical being. The second he sees that his genes have been fused with an insects, he knows that he is about to suffer a fate so fantastically terrifying that no one has ever even comprehended it before. Unimaginable.
you are right, this scene being key to the film is brilliantly realised by both Jeff (the total look of horror in his eyes) and the director of this movie whose name eludes me right now... David Cronenberg?
No, it means that in the original there was a human with fly parts, and a fly with human parts, slowly begining to think like the other. In the remake, both Brundle and the fly ceased to exist, and a new being came into place, who thought itself to be Brundle - only it wasn't!
Why would you want it to? The very act of doing so goes against not only the laws of humanity, but it also it is something that man was never meant to tamper with. Bascially its like the story of "Frankenstein" - man tries to raise corpses from the dead, but he not only fails to do so - but it turns out not how he intended and it ended up horrendously. Same goes for "The Fly".
I agree, but I can't help but be curious about it. Right now they can and are doing something to this effect w/ animal embryos, but only for research and law doesn't allow them to grow past a certain age, definitely not old enough to be 'born' or anything. But to be honest, when it comes to this subject, there's always a little voice in the back of my head that asks, 'How do we really know its against some imagined law, morality, etc. that Man shouldn't be doing anything related to this?'
But there is still a call to be ethical, regardless if your a scientist or doctor. The care of people and the state of humanity always come first and to compromise that in any other way is not "breaking free and the world is yours" - that's effectively being lawless and not in a good way.
This is my favorite scene from the movie. The way his eyes widen when the computer says, "Fusion of Brundle and Fly at molecular-genetic level" is awesome.
I think the funny part about all of this is that if its going to fuse everything that went into that pod brundle is going to have more problems then just a fly...theres tons of dna from any mites or little things that you don't know about beyond a fly living on your body. I know that wouldn't make for a good movie just dying from a terrible genetic dose of cancer because your genome is litterally unstable but hey I have to say it how it is...
The interface wasn't introduced with other kind's of life forms, that was Brundle's mistake. If it was,the system would've spotted the fly and stopped the transmission immediately upon scanning and encoding. This way due to "Not-Brundle" parameter,it thought of all lifeforms as singular.Thusly the hybrid.
What does molecular genetic level mean? Did that mean that when Seth and the fly were scrambled going from pod to pod their dna got mixed up and Seth had fly dna in him when he came out, thus starting the slow transformation into fly?
Basically, the machine tore his and the fly's DNA apart, then reorganised them. After the teleportation, his overall DNA sequence became 50% fly and 50% human, rather than him just absorbing the fly, which would have been like 99.9% human, 0.1% fly... If the final creature hadn't been so terribly deformed, the end result would have been a perfect hybrid of Man and Fly...
well, the way the two teleports work (1+1=2) seems a quite biological system, plus the fact that Seth becomes obsessed with sex and his statements "don't touch me. this might infectious. it's a bizzare form of cancer i suppose". all of these notes seem to address people's fear of HIV which came up in the early eighties: first their outer appearance would change, their skin become pale or filthy and finally they would die. like Seth.
holy shit!!! hes in trouble..

It's a shame you never got to see what happened to the fly after the teleportation :(

I think they fuse completely in this one. In the original they switched parts.

so does that mean that there wud be a fly sumwhere starting to turn into a human?

That sounds really DEEP. But I get your point :)

Invader Zim parodied this scene in Bolognius Maximus when Dib found out he was fused with Baloney

i always wondered how realistic the 'hybrid human' idea in movies is, i mean, what would happen if some1 actually did it?

Now your thinking like a scientist. Man puts the limits on man, break free and the world is yours

This scene still gives me the chills. I hate flies. If i found out i was fused with one, i'd commit suicide straight away! Nothing personal...haha

You wouldn't be human anymore if you were fused with a fly. But even so, I agree.

Secondary element is not-Brundle"

this movie is a nice metaphor for HIV and the hysterical "never-have-sex-with-unknwon-persons-or-you-might-get-sick" eighties

I like your observation, but how does this movie serve as a metaphor for the warning against the dangers of casual sex?

Good analysis there! I didn't see it that way, but your observations seems to make logical sense. You have devised a very compelling analysis.
