Awesome. Really takes you for a dark ride this song - good track for a Klingon opera maybe. Love how JJ bashes his bass with such attitude at 6:57. Going to see Stranglers tonight in Belfast and this really gets me hyped for it.
Brilliant song and very good quality vid too. Hugh and JJB should have had their own signature geetars but the bozos at Fender don't recognise real talent.
I saw them a few times and none better than in Edinburgh Playhouse in the early 80s. They opened with Shah Shah A Go Go and it totally blew me away - one of the best live songs I've ever heard.
fuck yeah. fuck all those other overated punk bands. stranglers= the real fathers of punk/new wave. hugh cornwell, jj, dave and jet will go down in history as gods
pound for pound this is a good a live performance by themeninblack that you will find.. i've followed them since '77 and had so many great moments and orgasms watching and listening to them.. the best band that will ever grace a stage..
Thriving footage of The Stranglers is so great to see. No matter how limited their major commercial visibility ~ when it was this well oiled they must have felt a great sense of power. In their own league for certain. Best!
Remember every bit from TV : Jet between glass plates, Hugh's ripped jacket, JJ going into the front rows..and of course a killer song brilliantly performed! Great memories, now in my favourites.
The best times of my life so far was had at the front of a Stranglers gig. And for me, JJ Burnell and Jet Black are the best rhythm section I ever heard.
@GANGARENE Hey-check out Midnight Summers Dream live in '83 Germany posted by sham64andahalf...JJ gets boisterous in the last minute, thrashing his bass...also, check out the reverb on Dave G's keyboard work...oustanding....
This is pure mint by the way...its like being back in the fucking seventies all over again!.....I dug a trench in the vinyl listening to Rattus Norvegicus...ace album...classic...and soooo fucking danceable...!...dont you just love them mean Strangler boys!
..simply,..one of the best rock songs u will be likely 2 hear,..EVER!!,..this is wot it is all about,...this song has it ALL,..n' even after all these Years, still sends shivers up ma spine,...GENIAL!!:),..absloutely briliant footage and gr8 sound quality 4 that era,....woulda luvvd 2 see Shug n' JJ try goin in2 the crowd in Glasgow!!, LOL,..would not get back out coz we wd KEEP them!!
Brilliant! Thebeauty of the composition in the finale more than mathces any prog rock! And all delivered with a sense of humour! Its a shame the keyboards were drowned out a little at the end though because they're so beautiful for such a dark piece. I think even Bach would have cocked an ear!
Rats are known to keep themselves quite clean even down in the Sewer..its the Mice ....Don't you love the way he walks???....Hit that Bug... I love the Stranglers:-))
if this is punk, than genesis abacab is new wave---this is another song that shows that already on their first album the were superb composers and musicians
Anyone thinking about starting a band should be made to watch this,if they could muster 10 percent of the talent/attitude of The Stranglers they`d be doing well.
@louis0121 i hear ya. i wish i could start my own band and probably cover every single stranglers song ever made. but no luck finding ANYONE who could even play half as the master greenfield on keyboards. i dont think there ever will be anyone..
@louis0121 i WAS thinking about starting a band, but i HAVE watched this and perhaps i will have to rethink the idea !!!!!! note to self " more practice, come back in another 5 years when i have REALLY mastered my instrument. " this only makes me feel very inadequate. lol
This song is just to good. The "rats rally"instrumental part at the end still sends a shiver up my spine.JJ's bass and Daves keyboards are mind bogglingly good and melodic!.
