@shanephotos3 Hi Shane. I've attached strings several ways. I rarely do the same thing twice, but here are a few ways. Put a nail through the ball end of the string, stretch the string to the other naill and wrap the string tightly around the nail and the string itself. This all should be done tightly before placing a bottle or objects under the strings. Remember to do it tightly since the strings will stretch a bit. sound will come once you place the bottles under the strings to add tension.
To answer a few technical questions- there really aren't any rules
To building a diddley bow-I like deep low sounds so I use the thickest guitar string I can find "low e" and to make it sound even meaner I tune it down to a "d" this is just a rough guide. As for adding a pickup without soldering - you should be able to use the entire wiring harness and attach to your diddley bow. I like to hit the strings with anything nearby - wood dowels, pencils even sticks. Diddle strong my blues makers!
This is awesome i am going to start making a diddly bow today :)!!!!
i am wanting to make a electric diddly bow i want to use the pickups out of my old squire strat guitar i don't have a soldering iron and i really want to make an electric:( do you know if i could do it without a soldering iron iron? anyway im going to make a diddly bow unpluged
@redgreen1990 I build most of mine out of things being thrown away. Talent, well, I been playin' and practicing for over 20 years. It's just a great way to spend time. Hope you build and play one someday- you won't regret it! Check out seasick steve for more inspiration.
@redgreen1990 hey man actually people like you invented the diddley bow! so don't worry, it's not hard to get a piece of plank and two bottles, plus a string or even a wire :)
@RevolutionarySamurai I like a heavy bronze - the thicker the better. But that's just me. It's a low "E" - It might even be tuned down closer to a "D". I use my ear to let me know what sounds best. thanks for the question- hope you build one if you have'nt yet.
@WoWintosh I built this diddley bow much like the originals- there are no tuners. You basically shove objects under each end of the attached string. The tighter the string is made the higher the pitch. I use my ear unitl I hear a pleasing pitch. Thank you for the comment.
@RevolutionarySamurai - I have made homemade pickups in the past. I was in a hurry to make a video fo this one and used a simple piezo clip on mic. You can see the wire hanging off the bridge in the video. Thanks for the question.
Glass and wood, when they resonate, have a different tone to me. These can be built fairly quickly and are fun to experiment with different materials.
Im making one at the moment, and I was wondering what string your using?
Im assuming its a guitar string, and If so, which one?

how did you go about getting the string onto the nail? I'm having a lot of trouble with doing so.

`What gauge of string did you use for this one? I've got tons of bronze guitar strings recently, just wondering what you used!

This particular one sounds good-the glass bottle does resonate which gives it a unique sound.

I generally either drill a small hole in the plank and hang it from a nail, or tie a piece of leather to the diddley bow and hang it- simple!
wadester1969 2 years ago
NIce Man!! If I could figure out how to hang it on my wall with the CigarBox you made I'd take it. Nice work!!
