@ChibiRaikou: The 1913 piano roll? Is that the performance to which you refer? Maybe you best edit your comments. He doesn't steer away of his own score. The dynamics are as they should be. I think you need to understand music and actually follow the score while listening. He adheres to it almost to a fault.
@ChibiRaikou: Please, with all due respect, go to Hell! You have no idea of that which you speak. The piano roll of which you speak was Debussy experimenting. Furthermore, the dynamics were altered by the roll editors after the performance. Maybe you need a crash course in not be an assumptive ass!
@faktablad: Sarcasm is the wit of an empty head and your comment surely personifies this cliche. What an absurd thing to say. There is quite the difference between interpretation in order to keep the music fresh and alive and another thing entirely to ignore the composers meticulous markings. Michelangeli ignores Debussy's marking almost entirely. It's not merely interpretation it's practically a rewrite.
@crumbleshake: In addition, I never said following the sheet shows technique and not passion. What an ignorant assertion and clearly showing you lack comprehension skils. I said all technique no passion. The piece is played dry and devoid of any real emotion. This is not how to play Debussy. You are the arrogant one, assuming as you do. Go back to grade school and music school.
@crumbleshake: Ignorant of what performance is? I think not! Have your even looked at the score? Have you played through it or performed it? Debussy was meticulous in his markings, and although every performer puts his own slant on the piece it should at least follow the basic parameters established by the composer. Michelangeli ignores the score entirely.
@Chopin1974l even debussy didn't follow his own markings (take a look at his piano roll of "la cathedrale engloutie"), it sounds like you need a crash course in music as listening rather than reducing performance to a silly game of "look at me! i've read the score too! aren't i clever?"
@Chopin1974l who did he think he was, giving us anything but a performance adhering strictly to the rules and guidelines of the printed page? it's kind of like my vision for the future, in which all performances of any piece are exactly the same. i'm thinking i'm just going to manufacture a perfect recording from many individual takes and force listeners to only listen to the sole interpretation. it's the only way the piece can truly thrive.
Michelangeli is the greatest! His dynamics in this piece is completely perfect. He is deep in the soul of Debussy and plays very powerful with his deepest emotions. This performance is not only perfeckt technique, but also deep insight and intellect, mixed with a beautiful view of the world and a burning heart! Pure love! :-)
The dynamics are all over the place. He generally ignores Debussy's markings. I always knew that he was an incredibly arrogant individual but to think himself better than the composer he is performing is beyond arrogance. I've just never understood what people see in him. Much like Argerich, all technique and no passion.

@Chopin1974l D'you know what else is arrogant? Naming yourself after an incredible composer despite being completely ignorant about what performance is.
I don't wanna read all these rotten comments, but just one thing : enjoy listening to the music, that's all

@Chopin1974l Because not following what the sheet says shows technique, not passion? What?
