This is not at all the biblical teaching of sola scriptura. Sola scriptura is that the bible alone is the Final authority and is the standard on which we correct and establish doctrine.

You have to do more than just say "Your interpretation" its a real vague thing to say because even the apostles had trouble with interpretation but as they grew in Christ they started to understand. Yours is a straw-man argument against SOLA SCRIPTURA (which is, perhaps, why you chose to debate against the Reformed Baptists...LOL). Sola Scriptura does not mean that Reformed Churches do not have any extra-Scriptural traditions. It merely means that, as Thomas Cranmer put it, nothing that contrary to, not found in, or proven from Scipture should be required of any in the church. Christmas (the holy day) is a tradition. If someone does not keep Christmas, we would not excommunicate them.
@Wenbier If anyone claiming to be a Christian does not love Jesus enough to honor His Birth by receiving His Most Sacred Body and Blood on that day, then that "Christian" has, at best, a very superficial relationship with Christ. In Matthew 23:2-3 Jesus was obiously referring to the written law otherwise he would be contradicting himself because he often spoke against the oral law. As for the Timothy argument, he (Timothy) and all believers were taught what Christ taught the apostles before it was written and this is the tradition that Paul speaks about in his epistle to the Thessalonians. I am a twenty-three year old man who has grown up in different Protestant churches for my entire life. I even attended Union University in Jackson, TN for three years, a major part of the Southern Baptist Convention. I have never ONCE heard or read the arguements you put forth in these videos. I am fascinated and disappointed simultaneously in those past teachers who either out of ignorance themselves or pride regarded this millenia-old issue as inconsequential! I need to know more.
I agree that scripture is a product of Christian tradition rather than the authority of Christian tradition. I don't think St. Paul was writing his letters thinking, "Now I have to be very clear here because this letter is going to be the final authority in the Church." I been attracted to Orthodox Christianity and probably will be joining the Orthodox Church in America very soon. Glad to see there are Orthodox Christians posting videos on here.

In regards to Matthew 23:1. I believe a deeper study of this would reveal that Christ was using contemporaneous language to emphasize that the Pharisees' lineage was of the House of Judah. However, I would be real careful to make this synonymous with Orthodox tradition due to that fact that the rest of Matthew 23-24 deals with the end of not only their destruction but also the dissolution of their elements. @davidpwithun Congratulations this Orthodox perspective which is one of the most hard to be understood from a protestant perspective. Protestants live in a tradition too - that of Luther and others. Except that this is not the Tradintion as the work of the Holy Spirit (cf. 1 John 14:26, 15:26). Orthodox don't put the Scripture aside for some purely human understandings. This is exactly what Luther did, replacing THE Tradition with one of his own. Bible is uinderstood only in THE Tradition.

Lutherans don't have that take on Sola Scriptura of Baptists, neither do Anglicans for the most part (and some Anglicans hold Tradition in a very high place). Luther's disciple Melcanthion said that anything not provable in Sacred Scriptures was adiaphora- permitted but not required. Thus, sacraments like unction, marriage, private confession, etc were generally not required, though not prohibited either. Anglicans took a similar view. (and Lutherans were never iconclasts).
@Magnulus76 1. You're right, and I would assert that even the more lenient Lutheran and Anglican views of Sola Scriptura are heterodox and, as history has shown, are an invitation to heresy. 2. The Lutherans may have never adopted iconoclasm, and I've heard some who pay lip service to the 7 ecumenical councils, but they certainly don't put the canons of the 7th ecumenical council into practice, which, by the standards of that council, makes them iconoclasts by default.
@davidpwithun Well, first off in the west the 7th ecumenical council was not widely known. The West never had an issue with iconclasm in the medieval period, and the role of religious images was more subdued than the in the east. It's a bit unfair when Eastern Christians approach these issues assuming that Christianity must somehow be uniform in practice or it is "heterodox". There are Oriental Orthodox churches that also do not have iconography in the Byzantine sense.
@Magnulus76 I haven't studied the issue in-depth, but Charlegmene (spelling?) did reject 7th Ecumenical Council (largely, as I understand it, as a pretext for declaring the Byzantines to be heretics in order to establish himself as the rightful Roman emperor), so I'm not so sure that the West didn't have the same problems with Iconoclasm. I'm also not sure which Oriental churches you're referring to. The Oriental Orthodox are in full agreement with the 7th EC.
@Magnulus76 You may be referring to the Assyrian (Nestorian) Church of the East, which came to reject Icons later, largely due to Islamic influence (and the unfortunate implications of a two-person Christology).
@davidpwithun The Malankara Orthodox (India) never really had much of an iconic tradition. Not because they are against them theologically, but because they were isolated culturally.
@Magnulus76 They also were under the Nestorian Church until very recently (18th century, if I remember correctly). And the Nestorian Church, as already discussed, came to reject images. The Malankara Church's lack of an iconographic tradition probably stems from this.
@davidpwithun I'm not sure I know what you mean by "putting the 7th ecumenicnal council into practice". The 7th ecumenical council says images of saints should be venerated, not that they must be venerated.

Canon 7 says that all temples (churches) must house holy relics; the decree of the Council says that "the venerable and holy images, as well in painting and mosaic as of other fit materials, should be set forth in the holy churches of God, and on the sacred vessels and on the vestments and on hangings and in pictures both in houses and by the wayside" and also: "We salute the venerable images. We place under anathema those who do not do this."
@Magnulus76 The canons and decrees of the Seventh Ecumenical Council do not state that these things are optional and "can" or "should" happen -- it anathematizes those who do not set up holy images and venerate them and it says that any temple which does not house these images as well as the relics of saints is no temple at all. This is what I mean when I talk about "putting the 7th Ecumenical Council into practice."

St. Paul himself says anyone who eats the Lord's Supper unworthily is guilty of the body and blood of the Lord! How could that be, if the protestant view-- that it is a symbol--is true? Isaiah 8:20 speaks of "the testimony" which is HOLY TRADITION. The Jews, including Jesus, believed in the written Torah and the oral interpretation of it God gave to Moses, who entrusted it to Joshua (a layman). My only criticism is: it's a little fast; may be hard for readers to keep up. The data you're giving should be read and heard slowly, and pondered, so that it can "sink in." Yours is a straw-man argument against SOLA SCRIPTURA (which is, perhaps, why you chose to debate against the Reformed Baptists...LOL). Sola Scriptura does not mean that Reformed Churches do not have any extra-Scriptural traditions. It merely means that, as Thomas Cranmer put it, nothing that contrary to, not found in, or proven from Scipture should be required of any in the church. Christmas (the holy day) is a tradition. If someone does not keep Christmas, we would not excommunicate them.

In Matthew 23:2-3 Jesus was obiously referring to the written law otherwise he would be contradicting himself because he often spoke against the oral law. As for the Timothy argument, he (Timothy) and all believers were taught what Christ taught the apostles before it was written and this is the tradition that Paul speaks about in his epistle to the Thessalonians. There cannot be any contradictions to the writtings as we see in the orthodox and roman catholic teachings and traditions. Sh'lom

@kody17166 The split is the fault of BOTH Churches in the 11th Century, and Rome is indeed moving towards the Orthodox style of worship, what with the new Roman Missal and all.
But the Bishop of Rome was given authority by Christ as the Head of His Church (Matthew 16:18) and it does not help the Orthodox at all to be in rebellion against this. The Pope has authority, the same as he did 2000 years ago in Christ's time. This fact cannot change.

I am a twenty-three year old man who has grown up in different Protestant churches for my entire life. I even attended Union University in Jackson, TN for three years, a major part of the Southern Baptist Convention. I have never ONCE heard or read the arguements you put forth in these videos. I am fascinated and disappointed simultaneously in those past teachers who either out of ignorance themselves or pride regarded this millenia-old issue as inconsequential! I need to know more.

I agree that scripture is a product of Christian tradition rather than the authority of Christian tradition. I don't think St. Paul was writing his letters thinking, "Now I have to be very clear here because this letter is going to be the final authority in the Church." I been attracted to Orthodox Christianity and probably will be joining the Orthodox Church in America very soon. Glad to see there are Orthodox Christians posting videos on here.

MrNickKane--Refer to 1 Corinthians1:16, Acts16:15, Acts 16:33 and Acts 2:38-39 as Biblical witness of this Tradition(baptism) among Christians. Hippolytus (215 A.D.) emphasizes the importance of baptism.
Baptism is a step toward salvation, but " becoming a Christian" is a lifetime process.

How could anyone take the hypothetical Irenaeus offers with his "supposed" and "should we not have" torn out of the context of a unrelated argument and believe that it provides any sound early church evidence against "sola scriptura". Like the football prophet "Dandy" Don Merideth once said, "If, "Ifs" and "buts" were candies and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas". Oh...as I comment as I am watching this, I notice that your dates for when the Gospels and the Epistles and the Revelation are derived solely from tradition rather than from eternal evidences. For instance, the idea that the Revelation was written in 95ad is one those that stem solely from tradition and vague remark made by Iranaeus. Of course, Papias wrote that the Jews killed John but experts overlook the fact that such an event would be more plausible well before 70ad than in the midst of...

As many other things: you know that someone becomes a Christian through the Baptism - but you took your protestant ritual of the Baptism from where exactly in the Bible? Or do you have it from what remained in your Church from the Tradition - as crippled as it remained... It's hard to change a ca 500 years old TRADITION of the protestantism with the authentic one.

In regards to Matthew 23:1. I believe a deeper study of this would reveal that Christ was using contemporaneous language to emphasize that the Pharisees' lineage was of the House of Judah. However, I would be real careful to make this synonymous with Orthodox tradition due to that fact that the rest of Matthew 23-24 deals with the end of not only their destruction but also the dissolution of their elements. This would include their traditions. This is something that plagues me...

@davidpwithun Congratulations this Orthodox perspective which is one of the most hard to be understood from a protestant perspective. Protestants live in a tradition too - that of Luther and others. Except that this is not the Tradintion as the work of the Holy Spirit (cf. 1 John 14:26, 15:26). Orthodox don't put the Scripture aside for some purely human understandings. This is exactly what Luther did, replacing THE Tradition with one of his own. Bible is uinderstood only in THE Tradition.

one of the biggest issues i would have with not takin scripture as authoratative is the issues that we see today in terms of Mary being the 'Mother of God' and Peter being the pope and the catholic church being the only church instituted by Christ, and all the vain traditions that the apostles clearly didnt teach. So many unbiblical traditions can be seen everywhere, theres nothing explicitly wrong with tradition but wen we know it contradicts what we the apostles taught, we need an authority

Lutherans don't have that take on Sola Scriptura of Baptists, neither do Anglicans for the most part (and some Anglicans hold Tradition in a very high place). Luther's disciple Melcanthion said that anything not provable in Sacred Scriptures was adiaphora- permitted but not required. Thus, sacraments like unction, marriage, private confession, etc were generally not required, though not prohibited either. Anglicans took a similar view. (and Lutherans were never iconclasts).

@Magnulus76 1. You're right, and I would assert that even the more lenient Lutheran and Anglican views of Sola Scriptura are heterodox and, as history has shown, are an invitation to heresy. 2. The Lutherans may have never adopted iconoclasm, and I've heard some who pay lip service to the 7 ecumenical councils, but they certainly don't put the canons of the 7th ecumenical council into practice, which, by the standards of that council, makes them iconoclasts by default.

@davidpwithun Well, first off in the west the 7th ecumenical council was not widely known. The West never had an issue with iconclasm in the medieval period, and the role of religious images was more subdued than the in the east. It's a bit unfair when Eastern Christians approach these issues assuming that Christianity must somehow be uniform in practice or it is "heterodox". There are Oriental Orthodox churches that also do not have iconography in the Byzantine sense.

@Magnulus76 I haven't studied the issue in-depth, but Charlegmene (spelling?) did reject 7th Ecumenical Council (largely, as I understand it, as a pretext for declaring the Byzantines to be heretics in order to establish himself as the rightful Roman emperor), so I'm not so sure that the West didn't have the same problems with Iconoclasm. I'm also not sure which Oriental churches you're referring to. The Oriental Orthodox are in full agreement with the 7th EC.

@Magnulus76 They also were under the Nestorian Church until very recently (18th century, if I remember correctly). And the Nestorian Church, as already discussed, came to reject images. The Malankara Church's lack of an iconographic tradition probably stems from this.

Canon 7 says that all temples (churches) must house holy relics; the decree of the Council says that "the venerable and holy images, as well in painting and mosaic as of other fit materials, should be set forth in the holy churches of God, and on the sacred vessels and on the vestments and on hangings and in pictures both in houses and by the wayside" and also: "We salute the venerable images. We place under anathema those who do not do this."

@Magnulus76 The canons and decrees of the Seventh Ecumenical Council do not state that these things are optional and "can" or "should" happen -- it anathematizes those who do not set up holy images and venerate them and it says that any temple which does not house these images as well as the relics of saints is no temple at all. This is what I mean when I talk about "putting the 7th Ecumenical Council into practice."
