this is a useful vid for me. i learning the one hand backhand out of necessity because of nagging tendinitis in my left hand where every two handed backhand contact is just too painful. thanks for the tips!!
Nice video - good coach. But I disagree on the grip. Playing anything but easy lobs, the extended index finger works as a whip that destabilizes the racquet and swing. You will notice both Federer and Justine Henin use a tight, closed fist. That is the way to get power. I've been playing one-handed backhand my whole tennis life (25 years - I cannot even hit with two hands) and know that the topspin shot requires a tight grip. For slices, the extended index finger is best. - USTA 6.0
@MarcusCMarcellus One thing I should have explained in the video that was apparent to me (but not everyone else) is that the fingers will naturally come together at contact through centrifugal force. A loose grip (until right before contact) is key in keeping the swing fluid. Baseball is another example of this, as the bat is held very loosely until contact. This is the reason both rackets and bats have butts on them - to keep the racket/bat from flying out of one's hand.
Thanks that was really helpful. I have a decent two-handed backhand, but I want to switch ho a one handed because It just feels better. Now I know the basics. Thanks!
Hey Coach Kyril, thanks for the tips! I've had a crappy backhand for about 2 years until I came across your video. Thanks a lot for posting these videos! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Will you be posting a video on how to do a Federer dropshot?
the first time i played tennis against my brother, i only beat him 6-3. now after watching these vids i destroyed him, 6-0. he only scored twice in the match. didnt know what hit him. thanks for the tips
very smart way to teach this.. I have always had a strong backhand that would hit an odd ball randomly during a long rally. The reason was I had an eastern backhand "hammer" style grip. Now my shot is almost perfect after spreading my fingers out. Thank you!
You help me a lot..because i change my backhand in one-handed 4 days ago because my coach believes that just because i am tall and i know verry good slice and serve this shot will help me a lot =)
im using a two handed back hand but i feel like its cutting off my speed and length getting both hands on and not a full extension of my arm, great video ima try this out
Thank you sooooooooo much for this video :) my coach told me to come on youtube and watch backhands (because my backhands are not consistent) and all of a sudden, I'm hitting backhands like I've been doing them for my whole life and they are going in the court! :) Thank you :)
@interventionlova808 - Same here. I have been trying to learn backhand and with top spin for many years. I am not able to do the technique correctly. This video i can understand and now gives me hope to mastering the backhand. Great tutorial, awesome thanks.
One thing i'm curious, I see a lot of pros do tend to hold the grimp with the fingers closer together for the eastern backhand. Are they resorting to this to get more stability, seeing how the shots they have to return are a usually hit very hard ?
@86C415 The fingers will move closer together naturally as a result of centrifugal force, i.e. that's why there's a butt at the end of the racket (much like a baseball bat). If it wasn't there, the racket would fly out of our hands when we swing. Hence, the racket 'slides' ever so slightly during the swing, which brings the fingers closer together. Hope that helps!
coach can you please make a video about being up close to the net while playing doubles like how to handle high volleys and fast volleys and when you can tell if the ball should be yours or your partners
@NANOxPRODUCTIONS We've got some volley videos coming soon, which include how to handle balls that are coming fast and right at you, plus high balls as well. Nothing 'doubles specific' yet, but we'll get there :-)
Another key to your example is being quick enough to make it to the ball and properly set up that shot as demonstrated...and being able to do that numerous times during a match.
i knew it!when i do one handed backhands i, by habit, used the hammer grip :(...no wonder every time i execute the one handed backhand i always feel that i am not completely in control at 100% to where i want the ball to land..thanks coach!
@snookylover You need to keep your swing on a 'path' toward your target. (We are releasing a DVD soon that explains this in detail. Just check out the link in the description of the video and sign up for our newsletter and we'll update you when new videos are available). - CK
yeah the thing that helps me the most with this is spread the index finger away from the other fingers. That way you have more control and that goes for forehand and serve too which is like a major game upper. slice kick ass.
I have always used a hammer grip with fingers together on my single backhand, but it makes more sense to spread them out, as you get more control and move the racket and arm as more of a unit.
I take it that the tip about spreading out your fingers also apply to the slice backhand and semi western forehand?
I can't believe what I have been missing all these years. I just tried out a eastern 1HBH and wow, I hit so consistently deep. I just need to work on the control to hit it cross court short, etc like I can do on my 2HBH. But woww, the shot is probably better than my forehand. It was like hitting my hardest forehand effortlessly.
Thanks very much. I was searching for how Fedrer hits silky backhand returns and I beliee you explained it pretty well. Though still I am not very much convinced about Eastern Back Hand grip and keeping fingures loosely until contact the ball, but I guess you are right and I need to practice it a bit to get hang of it. Excellent video.
I've played tennis consistently for a grand total of a few months all together. This convinces me to get back into it. Such clear coaching. And, I LOVE A ONE-HANDED BACKHANDS!
@dirtywork123 Thanks for the kind words - not doing personal lessons right now, but Coach Mauro and I will be getting some groups together soon and if you go to our site and slap your email address in the box provided we'll let you know when and where we'll be :-)
@emoboynumber13 Get as close as possible to the ball and hit it on the rise! You always want to be moving in on high balls if possible - BEFORE - they get to bounce too high! It steals time from your opponent because you're not 'backing up', plus your get to use more of the ball's momentum and shove it back to your opponent fairly easily. Hope that helps!
I enjoy this video and your other videos a lot. Would you do a video on 1 handed backhand that has to hit a really high ball? I have problem with this shot, most 1-handers have problem with this shot even the pros.
I suspect that the high backhand ones for 1-handers are not the same as the regular bounce. It's just not possible. I would love to see a video on this one or at least talk about it. I am learning a lot from your videos. Thanks again.
@didanhtennis Hitting high shots isnt easy. It's a matter of physics. Once the ball contact point is near shoulder height or higher, there is little you can do with the ball from the baseline. The secret to hitting high balls is not to let them get high at all. If you're already "late" for the ball, you can try a few things. 1) Jump. This may give you a little extra boost. 2) Hit a low overhead 3) Wait for the ball to come back down. 4) Lob and pray an act of god disrupts their shot.
@neosquid That's pretty much all you can do - that is unless you're Richard Gasquet who seems to be able to hit winners off high balls sometimes.
I try to take the ball early as much as possible and hit half volleys if need be to stop it getting up high. Of course, you won't be able to do that all the time on say angled kickers that get up high, but it's better to use the energy your opponent gives you by taking the ball early.
@1steveiam try brushing the ball, that's what my coach is always telling me. when you brush the ball, you get more topspin, more topspin equals less balls out. look
It takes a while to make get it as consistent as the two handed backhand but once you get consistency you can start hitting lethal shots with very good placement.
great video I would also add that people that are interested in changing from a 2 handed back hand to learning this 1 handed backhand you must not have a racquet that is to heavy for your newly 1 hander. I had great form like this and I didn't want to give up on my 12.0 ounce yonex player frame but even with knowing perfect form I would hit to deep because of timing and movement of the head because it was to heavy for me. Especially in doubles !! where you have to react quicker.
hey i just started using this backhand and its really comfortable but im not completely sure what the grip is, should i make contact with a flat face or facing downwards at an angle? please respond
@matthew40518 On MOST shots, the racket face is actually perpendicular to the ground. When you combine a racket face that is perpendicular to the ground, moving up and forward at contact with the ball in front of your body at contact, you get a reliable topspin shot. - CK
@assailant85 Yes, you don't want the shoulder opening up too soon, or your potential (stored) energy is depleted before contact with the ball, resulting in a wasted release of kinetic (released) energy before you strike the ball.
Basically, you want to follow the physics lesson you learned in High School, about the Law of Conservation of Momentum, i.e. by keeping the shoulders turned and body coiled as long as possible before your begin you forward swing. Hope that helps clarify things! - CK
I love this video. Very entertaining especially towards the end. I like your usage of the word wicked, and these tips actually helped me improve my one hander.
I would think the forehand grip slides back into place naturally when making the transition, well it does for me anyway beacuse it's my preferred shot.
Hey coach Kryil, I just changed from a 2 handed BH to a one handed backhand and have been watching your helpful videos. I feel the power of the stroke when contacting the ball in front of me and at a reasonable height; however, when the ball is high I don't know what to do; at times, my body will rise to much or I completely brake my wrist in or der to get the shoot accross. PLEASE let me know what to do.
CoachKyril, I'm happy that you and I share the same theory on taking those balls. I hate it when my students wait for the balls to go to a comfortable position.
#3 is hard.... I've been a 1 hander for 11 years and this isn't all that easy especially during matches.
@CoachKyril can you promote the extreme one-handed back hand grip...Henin/Gasque...this one has more variation and does great against high balls. I feel the the grip yr using which is the one Federer uses is very similar to a slice grip no? Anyway just a thought..
Coach Kyril you are awesome man. I've always wanted detailed explanation of the subtleties of each shot...I've never had anyone explain things as well as you. You are the best I've seen on the internet, and I've watched all these guys on youtube.
Thanks so much for the video. I have been trying to fix my backhand all fall and winter... my grip is a huge issue. Trying to get more comfortable with my fingers spread... feels like I'm losing control of the racquet at first, but after holding it here in my living room ... I'm going to work on it this afternoon ....heading to hit the wall now
That is good stuff there, Coach! Like your tips on the grip, which is key to hitting that ripper BH! Most of us were taught a weaker grip so we had to change a little bit but that is OK. My tennis buddies now approach my BH at their own PERIL!!!!
thanks for the vid. It helped a bit , but im struggling to get power on my shots after the grip change. It also hurts on my elbow. Should I shift back to my 2hand backhand? please reply
I'm not a doctor, so please don't take the following as medical advice.
Most elbow problems on a one-handed backhand come as a result of hitting the ball with a bent elbow, which is a result of hitting the ball late, which comes from trying to power the shot with the arm. Turn your shoulders, and meet the ball further out in front of your body, letting the racket absorb the impact instead of your arm.
thanks!!! question??? do u stiffen your wrist through contact, or keep it loose and 'roll' through your backhand through your wrist??? thanks for the great explanation!!!
Omg I can't believe how much topspin I can whip into the ball now. My backhand is way stronger than any of my other shots now it's amazing. You are awesome coach Kyril.
I have seen many videos on you tube. You are one of my favorites! You do explain it very good! Thank you a lot! And dont be nervous , you are doing great! Thank you for helping us , and continue doing it! : )))))))))) AAAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++++

I like your usage of the word wicked, and these tips actually helped me improve my one hander.

my double backhander absolutely sucks, it use to be my best shot and i dont know what happened to it.

hey coach i feel ur passion man, that's wt a tennis coach needed most
hungsiuming 2 years ago 19
But if you are using that grip, won't it be difficult to change back to the eastern forehand grip during a rally for your forehands?
breakermagical 2 years ago
No, just use your left hand (if you're a right hand shot) to rotate the racket to the eastern forehand.
cuteguyfromcanada 2 years ago
I would think the forehand grip slides back into place naturally when making the transition, well it does for me anyway beacuse it's my preferred shot.

Hey coach Kryil, I just changed from a 2 handed BH to a one handed backhand and have been watching your helpful videos. I feel the power of the stroke when contacting the ball in front of me and at a reasonable height; however, when the ball is high I don't know what to do; at times, my body will rise to much or I completely brake my wrist in or der to get the shoot accross. PLEASE let me know what to do.
javierf4280 2 years ago
You have three choices in a situation like that:
1. Get in position to hit the ball on the rise BEFORE it gets too high.
2. Move back and wait for the ball to drop into your wheelhouse (I personally don't like this option).
3. Give a go at doing a scissor-kick jump to get your body high enough to complete the stroke (not recommended unless you've practiced it A LOT).
#1 is your best option, and it will take some practice, but you can do it:)
CoachKyril 2 years ago
CoachKyril, I'm happy that you and I share the same theory on taking those balls. I hate it when my students wait for the balls to go to a comfortable position.
#3 is hard.... I've been a 1 hander for 11 years and this isn't all that easy especially during matches.
hillsong1004 2 years ago
@CoachKyril can you promote the extreme one-handed back hand grip...Henin/Gasque...this one has more variation and does great against high balls. I feel the the grip yr using which is the one Federer uses is very similar to a slice grip no? Anyway just a thought..
jkdhoward 2 years ago
Watch Wawrinka. He has a fantastic backhand and handles high balls quite well.
AllGenreMusic 1 year ago
You are definitely right about that...Wawrinka's one-hander is right up there with Federer's.
CoachKyril 1 year ago
#1 is definantly the best, but it is hard. easier than the other two, but still hard. takes a lot of time and practice.

Coach Kyril you are awesome man. I've always wanted detailed explanation of the subtleties of each shot...I've never had anyone explain things as well as you. You are the best I've seen on the internet, and I've watched all these guys on youtube.
THANKS

Thanks so much for the video. I have been trying to fix my backhand all fall and winter... my grip is a huge issue. Trying to get more comfortable with my fingers spread... feels like I'm losing control of the racquet at first, but after holding it here in my living room ... I'm going to work on it this afternoon ....heading to hit the wall now

That is good stuff there, Coach! Like your tips on the grip, which is key to hitting that ripper BH! Most of us were taught a weaker grip so we had to change a little bit but that is OK. My tennis buddies now approach my BH at their own PERIL!!!!
Gman6755 2 years ago
thanks for the vid. It helped a bit , but im struggling to get power on my shots after the grip change. It also hurts on my elbow. Should I shift back to my 2hand backhand? please reply
r0baa 2 years ago
I'm not a doctor, so please don't take the following as medical advice.
Most elbow problems on a one-handed backhand come as a result of hitting the ball with a bent elbow, which is a result of hitting the ball late, which comes from trying to power the shot with the arm. Turn your shoulders, and meet the ball further out in front of your body, letting the racket absorb the impact instead of your arm.

we need more trainers like u in Norway. Trainers that accually care

thanks!!! question??? do u stiffen your wrist through contact, or keep it loose and 'roll' through your backhand through your wrist??? thanks for the great explanation!!!
Kentang93 2 years ago
You need to keep the wrist locked through the shot - the 'roll' you speak of comes as a result of your follow-through.
CoachKyril 2 years ago
great thanks!

wow thx for the advice coach this vid helped me alot in my matches! anyway are u sponsored by nike? so am i!

I feel like a blind man who can finally see!
#1 .. change grip to eastern grip (other grips will send balls like lobs over fence)
#2 .. coil upper body by showing back to opponent (this is where power comes from)
#3 .. meet the ball in front (not behind, not parallel)
#4 .. keep head still & finish thru swinging using upper body rotation
#5 .. rest is history
Thank you Coach Kyril !
You are a talented player & even more talented instructor.
