Didn't know he did a RI Lecture :). Fantastic, shall watch all these after boxing day dinner whilst recovering. Happy Christmas all Saganists out there (are we called Saganists?)
Carl Sagan - "Our collective free time needs to shift as much as possible to education. Whether you're a young student or finished school long ago, get out to the library whenever you can and work hard to learn everything you can about this world. Each individual and society will benefit from being able to solve more problems and make better decisions. Education is an amazing discovery process that repays you endlessly."
It's amazing that far more than 500 planets have been found around other stars, many or a decent fraction of them are larger than all the planets in our Solar System put together and the smallest of sich is just under 1.4 times the mass of the Earth. We are finding planetary system at an amazing pace.
it's beautiful to think that Sagan almost certainly inspired many of the children in that audience into successful careers in physics and other sciences.

anybody notice that president obama speaks almost in the same way as carl sagan. pauses at certain moments, etc. could be a complete coincidence but I wonder if he is a sagan fan? anyway, i certainly could be entirely wrong.
Maybe it's just how incredibly intelligent people speak when they want to be understood by others that aren't as intelligent? carl sagan spent his life explaining complex things to dumber people.and always got his point across. Obama obviously did the same because the average american is a moron yet they still voted for him.
The way Sagan spoke reminds me of how grandparents tell bedtime stories to kids. The ebb and flow makes everything much more interesting and keeps the listener involved...unless you over do it.
Obama speaks similarly. Wouldn't it be difficult to sit through his speeches if he was monotone?
I hadn't realised Sagan did any of these - I remember going to them 50 years ago and learning about entropy and thermodynamics, A wonderful London tradition.
Hey, thanks for uploading the video. But there is one part in it in which he refers to a planet between saturn and uranus. I know this is not true considering its been decades since the lectures. But do you know what he was possibly referring to?
@venompangx Carl was referring to 2060 Chiron, a type of planetoid discovered in 1977 that orbits between Saturn and Uranus. Until it was made into a new class of planetoid, some astronomers seriously considered making it a new main planet.
@9Rayvik9 i think hes talking about ceres or eris i cant remember which one is between saturn and uranus. in any case they are both classified as dwarf planets[i think]
@9Rayvik9 He was referring to the centaur 2060 Chiron, recently discovered at the time. Centaurs are the name given to minor objects orbiting the sun outside the Asteroid belt, but inside the Kuiper belt, regardless of their composition (i.e. they can be rocky like asteroids or icy like comets). Chiron was the first discovered.

@9Rayvik9 I think he is referring to Chiron (Search Eso.org for Chiron, should be the first PDF, for the original paper on it) which was originally assumed to be a small planet but is now considered a centaur object. I would imagine that it is a captured Kuiper belt object, but that's just my guess.
TED version in 1977 lol..

Saturn and Jupiter actually have over 120 moons if you were to count them all together. Amazing how many we have found since the 70s.

A more refined form of many of the ideas presented in these lectures can be seen in the Cosmos series which was aired not too long after this.
Yet, it was very interesting to see how these ideas were developed and shaped in Carl's mind over the years.
You get the same feeling when you read his books.

@9Rayvik9
The object we was talking about is most likely Chiron, and object which belongs to a class known as centaurs that orbit between Saturn and Uranus.

@9Rayvik9 I believe he's referring to a body that was eventually classified as a moon.

@9Rayvik9 2 years later, but, I believe the object he's referring to is 2060 Chiron, a minor planet confirmed in 1977.
