Why do people comparing this to the original The Who? I'm 200% sure if MMJ and Vedder didn't intend to beat anyone. They're having some fun on stage while amusing and entertaining folks like us (and audiences as well). Stop bragging about whose version better or so. Just enjoy.
Eddie screws up like 3 different times.. The first verse, the part where he says "i can't believe me/do my eyes deceive me" instead of "I can't believe it", and he tries to do the final "you're all forgiven" a few measures too early. Tommy also screws up noticeably in the first verse too. It's a tough ass song though, I applaud their effort, it's still great. I love both pj and mmj but this song is so epic it's impossible not to notice the mistakes. Nonetheless I still just put this on my ipod.
I got to meet the drummer in New Orleans at the House of Blues. I bought him a jager shot - he was really friendly and more than happy to down some booze.
ive been waiting for eddie vedder to smash my face again ever since do the evolution, hasnt happend. Its a shame because PJ are very respectable but Ved Veds voice just doesn't do it for me when he is singing with PJ. Stu makes a good point in that the guys deserve serious props for playing the thing all the way through, and also that obviously only The Who are going to play it better. This version is definitely softer than The Who version.
The drummer is quite good and under other circumstances maybe passable but not on a song that is made awesome originally by moons' drums. Personally cant tell drummers apart these days with the predictable style. The Who performance is better. This version is amazing and lots of fun, but The Who version is better. Clean out your ears, expand your record collection and eventually you'll see the facts. Or maybe im just another self important internet dickhole hahah.
Man Jim James is one of the only modern musicians in this vein who is any good. Eddie Vedder has the voice of nickelback, creed etc.... hard to argue in favor of that.... the who did this so much better.... why doesnt jim sing some more in this tune?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
not amazing as i was hoping for thanks to the boring drumming. the original song (r n r circus version) came out thirty years ago, everything should be improved upon since then, not gotten more sissy. Maybe play with a lil fire in the belly, or maybe dont cover the Who if your drummer isn't an absolute maniac or animal. And don't give me the argument about this drummer being unconventional, because it sounds like any large, popular indie buzz band could trade drummers and no one would notice
You were hoping for amazing from a band you obviously don't like - I really don't think that's anyones fault but your own. "My Morning Jacket covering the Who! I HATE their drummer, this will be amazing!"
The drummer is great, the band is great, the cover is great. Get a hobby.
yup. from a HUUUUUUGE Who fan... this band (who i had never ever heard of) tore shit up. the intensity and energy was there the whole time. the drummer is no moonie and this isn't leeds or rock and roll circus, but they sure did the song justice and them some. no question.
@Who2Are1You I'm a huge MMJ and Who fan, The Who were my favorite band, until I discovered MMJ, not 'cause of this, I took a chance, bought a ticket, saw them New Years eve 2008, mind blown, haven't turned back. Once i found out MMJ covered The Who, I freaked out and now this is one of my favorite things on Youtube. I also dig their cover of "It Makes No Difference" and "Move on Up"
@CSISA i'm very hesitant when looking into something made after 1979, but, nonetheless, open-minded. i haven't heard anything besides this song, but i'll start looking into them. i love discovering new music.
@Who2Are1You I was the same way, These guys helped me realize that there is some great music out there right now, you just gotta dig under the first layer of the crap to get to it, though. Check out MMJ songs like Mahgeetah, Anytime, At Dawn, Lowdown, The Way That He Sings, Lay Low, Gideon, and Steam Engine,
@Who2Are1You I was the same way, These guys helped me realize that there is some great music out there right now, you just gotta dig under the first layer of the bad stuff to get to it, though. 'the fuck are you talking about. It was released 30 years ago, therefore the song has to be 'improved upon'?? Bollocks.
This is an awesome cover. Although I'm not a Morning Jacket fan, I think the drummer is great. Drag yourself off your classic rock high horse. Or Vedder will smash your face until you fall off.
@jambo4711 I take exception. The Who Live at leeds version seems to be a bit better than the R S circus. It seemed less rehearsed and more raw. The "forgiven chorus" seems to be more spontaneous. Anyway, to each their own.
Damn!!! That's a tight tight band. Best cover of this song period. There's no topping the Who with Daltry's voice, Townsend's windmilling Gibson, Keith Moon's chaos, and Entwhistle's thunder. (LONG LIVE THE OX!) However, these guys did justice to it. The best part is; it was clear they were having a fun time. And I think that's the essence of this song. Of course, The Who would have played it about 50 decibels higher.
Awesome... except that Eddie totally screwed up the lyrics on the 1st verse... dunno why that bothers me so much but I think if you are gonna perform a song in front of people you should, I dunno, look up the lyrics and practice them beforehand.
It wasn't his fault. The bass player goes to G on the second verse (ok, corrects it almost instantaniously) and that surely led Eddie to go to the 3rd verse.
ya dude hallahan is an amazingly unconventional drummer... not as fast or wild as keith moon but you can hear him a mile away in the same fashion of moon. great drumming great song great mix of two great bands paying tribute to another great great band. jsut fucking great.
Any remnants of Eddie backstage jamming along with a couple guys with a guitar? I loved how much pure joy you could see in Eddie while listening to this song. I could relate. This song would do it anytime.
I must say that that was a very good cover. Though, as solid as their performance was, it doesn't even come CLOSE to The Who's original masterpiece. Res
i respectfully disagree sir, and i do not understand what you mean by too soft... anyways, you have to remember that only the who are the who and you have to give credit to guys who can pull something as complicated as this off this well.
i'm not really sure you can say eddie got the lyrics "wrong". the who changed the lyrics of the song many times in concert, example being live at leeds, compared to the actual album version. and i would not suggest that you have any more knowledge of the who than vedder does, as you are only 16 and vedder has been listening to the who longer than you've been born. if you won't give them credit, then why don't you sit down at a drum kit and pull off the part at the beginning of the ivor segment.
well he does fuck up in the bigenning and he has no idea wtf hes doing in the middle of the song. he has to look at the other fuck ups in order for him to know what to do next
so what if hes listening to the who
he still fucks up the songs
i know i cant pull it off cause i dont play drums.i play guitar
i bet you cant do that, you probobly cant even hold a pair of drumsticks!!
I guarantee that I am a better drummer than you and probably a better guitarist too... So I wouldn't bring that into it- I don't even know why you did, we're talking about a video. And at this point I've realized it's really not worth arguing with you about it because you're just some Cobain fan who's here to hate on Vedder. You're not even here to defend the Who- one of my favorite bands... You only want to piss off all the Vedder fans that watch this video. So your opinion is worthless.
Please. They are amazing. They just hotten up the song a little. Nothing big but they do it great. Jim James has one of the best songs ever i think and one of the most characteristic. I´m sorry if my spelling is not great
without the Who or any other famous bands from that era like the beatles, eric clapton, the doors, or led zeppelin, there wouldnt be many bands around today like pearl jam or my morning jacket. most newer bands were influenced by those early masters of music.
