Sea otters eat sea urchins and thus protects kelp beds. Urchins kill kelp by cutting the roots. When urchins breed unchecked, all the kelp dies. Urchins are kept in balance by otters, lobsters and sheepshead fish, all in very short supply. Kelp beds are essential for young fish. Without the kelp beds they lack shelter and food.
this is a true thing that happens! its not a chain letter! its kinda scary at first but it really works!! paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F4 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!! its soo wierd!
Poor commentary: there are more than a dozen species of (river) otters, all much more numerous than sea otters, and the Brazillian Giant Otter is a comparable size to these sea otters. Only the 'marine otter' - lutra felina - is probably more endangered.
I'm aware of many species of otter. My intention was to introduce people to the sea otters that live along California's central coast, about 2500 animals.
