  • well kathak looks different all over the world as everyone has their own way of interpreting it. reality tv shows only show a tiny glimpse of a much larger canvas. i suppose something is better than nothing

  • Awesome!!!!! Love Kathak!!! woot!!! :D

  • Extremely beautiful...and to the person who says katahk developed during Mughal period...please go and read the history behind kathak...the wrod itself means story telling and was used in Indian classical form to tell stories as written in the Indian culture...the dance was infused with Mughal touch only during that period but the origination of the dance is exactly what she has told...

  • wooooooooo go gurl!

  • haha, i agree hotohorifan411. The SA judge is quite a pain!!!

  • I love how this style of dancing puts so much expression in the eyes. I think this style is beautiful.

  • There are a few people here who are saying that her dancing is a joke, and while I don't agree with that, I do think she is misrepresenting herself a bit...to claim this is pure North Indian style kathak from 4,000 years ago (which is most certainly wrong by any standards, kathak as we know it now really developed during the Mughal periods) and then to fuse it with different styles of music and choreography that aren't even considered "pure" by today's standards is extremely misleading...

  • How do i find out what she is dancing to? Does anyone know what song she's dancing to?

  • that song is an indian classical song

  • awesome..proud to be brown lol

  • Is the judge from south africa racist or something or just plain stupid? He never gave India a good score even when they deserved it (ie. THIS DANCE)...maybe he was correct for some of the group dances but he's just stupid for being the only judge to give this an 8 and the bharatanatyam a low score too...quote from him: "I've seen some amazing indian dances in south africa" oh yeah...I'm sure!!

  • wats the song

  • The different Indian styles here remind me of the different Hawaiian hula styles --one which translates "ancient" hula and the one more modern, most popular in the 1940's; both in the concentration on the hands (using somewhat different finger position) and feet with difficult body positions and perfect rythym. It's fascinating to see how both hold similarities to each after all the many hundreds (thousands?) of years while each are still so different!

  • SHE WAS ON HEROES!!!! :D

  • the best!

  • HAHA at 3:04 to 3:13 you can hear her walking over lol

  • Amrapali, you go girl ....I hope & pray you will be the Champ - but you already are, to me.

So proud to be an Indian - its be cos of people like you who keep our culture very alive ^_^.

    Thanks for sharing :))))

  • stargirl, for someone who claims to have been dancing kathak for 8 years, i'm surprised you don't know what she was doing at 1:21. that was not simply a flailing of arms, but it indicated the beating of the dumaroo, or Shiva's drum. this whole dance had a meaning but you seemed to have missed it.

  • Yeah maybe it's a dhumroo at 1.21 but there isn't an excuse for what follows the dhumroo (around 1.26). I understand she's trying to do old style kathak but I think it's an insult to a western audience to be forced such crude kathak onto to make it more interesting, and she stumbles on her sum too! I dunno man, I've heard so much about her and I was expecting a completely different standard

  • you've got a good eye. i missed that mis-step at 1:26 because the camera panned out. i agree she could have hit the sam a bit stronger as well. she's trained in the jaipur gharana so i was chalking up any differences up to that.

  • again...its the choreography...therefore its the choreographer. so yea...WISH they would have picked a different and BETTER choreography for this competition for INDIA.

  • this dance could have been stronger...looks like shes half assing it. HEr facials are not even that great....it just looks like she has a hard time breathing hahaahhaa. Ive seen way way way better classical dance.

  • in her defense, she's dancing for an audience--not for uber closeups. it's less of a crime to be expressive than it is not to emote at all.

  • This was by far the best performance of the show, thank you so much for posting it!
